Integration of GLUE 2 and OGSA-BES

Hi everybody, in the context of the OMII-Europe project, we are preparing to contribute an implementation of GLUE 2 to be integrated into OGSA-BES implementations (info providers will be available for the OMII-Europe partners, nevertheless the work can be leveraged for other platforms). The idea is to implement the GLUE 2 specification draft that will be available by OGF 21. The aim is to have a prototype implementation to be showed during SuperComputing 2007. Service, Resource, Element etc.

Hi Sergio, I was looking at the document and thinking hard about the service, resource, element relationships. What we have at the moment is a generic service entity linked to the computing resource which are both encapsulated with the computing element. What I would suggest is to have a generic service entity linked to a "computing service" entity. The share, execution and application environments would then be linked to the computing service. Report from DMTF Symposium

Hi everybody, here is a report on the presentation/participation at the DTMF Symposium last week: 1. between the DMTF and OGF there is an official collaboration described by a "work register" that enroll OGF as an alliance partner of DMTF 2. Tom Roney is the person responsible for this liaison and he has invited OGF persons in order to give talks at the DMTF symposium: - OGF GLUE WG: I gave the talk - OGF OGSA WG: Ellen Stokes - OGF RM WG: Paul Strong - OGF (Technical Strategy): Chris Smith the presentation are available in the DMTF Symposium schedule: http://www.dmtf.org/events/alliancepartners/2007_schedule/ 3. as regards the GLUE talk: - we managed to "expose" DMTF people to our problem domain - based on the on-going work register, some DTMF member will provide some mentoring activity in order to enable us to "cast" the GLUE model in the context of CIM Meta-model and model - there was some discussion on IPR policies and the best way to collaborate seems to be in the context of official DMTF telecons - the effort that they will be able to spend is small (probably 1 telecon a month for 2 hours) - as regards the model, we explained the details of GLUE entities to a relevant person in the DMTF in a side meeting and I understood that several concepts can be already mapped into CIM -- Site -> AdminDomain -- Element -> AdminDomain -- Share -> SLA -- Resource -> Capability 4. the "Execution Environment" model defined in the context of OGSA WG (Ellen Stokes) will be part of next CIM Core schema with a dedicated page; GLUE could also go into that page (to be defined) My general comment is that the overall experience was an important event. Modeling GLUE in the context of CIM will add some overhead to our activity, nevertheless it is worth to try. The other important on-going activity is to evaluate how GLUE can fit into the OGF Reference Model. There is an on-going discussion in the context of the RM mailing list (http://www.ogf.org/pipermail/rm-wg/2007-July/thread.html) and we'll report as soon as we converge. You all are welcome to follow and contribute to the discussion. I will write another email about suggestions for next steps. Multi-institutional Infrastructures for e-Science

As input into the discussion on Friday, I have tried to give a description of the main problem domain which we are trying to address. After this description, I have tried to define what we understand by site, service, VO and resource based on our experience within this problem domain. Problem Description: Universities and research institutes are real organizations that have computing centers. Each organization is autonomous and have their own, security infrastructure, policies, systems etc. and are ultimately responsible for their resources. Scientists from different institutions collaborate on specific research topics and they would like to use the resources available to them. The difficulties faced by the collaboration is that each organization where the resources are located have different, security infrastructures, policies, systems etc. To solve this problem the security infrastructures, policies, systems need to be generalized. A common security model is adopted where usage of resources at an organization is dependent on the collaboration to which the user is participating. Types of systems are also generalized so that the user does not have to understand the details of different implementations that organizations have. An interface is required at the organizational boundary that maps the generalized system to the organizational specific security model and the local system. Site: A site represents the real organization, eg Universities and Research Institutes which are administrative domains. It is usually a physical location where the resource and system administration team can be found. They have their own polices and identity and exist independently of other sites. Virtual Organization: A virtual organization represents the collaboration, a group of scientist working together for a specific topic. Within this virtual organization there may be sub groups and different roles. Virtual organizations also have there own policies and exist independently. Members of the VO do not have to belong to any organization which provides resources. Service: The service is the interface at the site boundary that maps from a generic grid interface to the local system. As the service provides the interface between the grid and a local system, there is a relationship between the service and the site. In addition there is also a relationship between the service and the virtual organization. Services also have to ensure the adherence to agreed common polices, eg access logs, accounting and auditing etc. Resource: A resource is the functionality that the user would like to use. As the resource is local to the site, there is a relationship between the resource and the site. As the service gives access to the resource there is also a relationship between a resource and a service.

Reference Model Working Group Meeting Notes Fri 13th July 2007 Agenda Joint meeting with the GLUE wworking group. Attendees Ellen Stokes Paul Strong Dave Snelling Chris Kantarjiev Laurence Field Sergio Andreozzi Michele Carpenè Marco Canaparo Steven Newhouse Steven Fisher Discussion Laurence described the GLUE Schema 2 context, as per his email (http://forge.ogf.org/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.glue-wg/wiki/PhoneMeeting…) and requested feedback as to whether this was in line with the Ref Model and so forth. He noted that it was the concepts rather than the names that were important. The general concensus (Steve, Paul and Dave) was that the Ref Model is fairly high level and abstract, and focused on managability, leaving plenty of latitude for the GLUE group to specialize as needed. The Ref Model in intended as a highly extensible, abstract umbrella model which allows references or mappings to other models. Thus it provides a unified context for a number of complementary, yet incomplete (with regards to context) models, and a basis for specialization, such as GLUE. The discussion then went into how to break down the GLUE problem domain - the appropriate entities and perhaps how they map to the Ref Model. Indeed it became clear that an exercise in mapping this, and especially focusing on the notion of Shares (as per http://forge.ogf.org/sf/go/doc14639?nav=1) would be a very useful exercise for the combined team to undertake.
