Dear colleagues, The AuthZ Interop document concludes its public comment period at the end of this week, and has received only couple of comments so far: http://www.ogf.org/gf/docs/comment.php?id=389 Please read this and consider any comments you might wish to provide by the end of the public comment period, Sept. 28. Beyond this, we look forward to seeing many of you out at the OGF 36 / IEEE e-Science / Microsoft e-Science / GLIF meetings coming up only two weeks from now in Chicago. The schedule is online at the following link: http://ogf.org/gf/event_schedule/index.php?event_id=25 We do have one or two other sessions that are being considered for addition to the Monday afternoon portion of the schedule, so please do check this page when you arrive to find out the latest updates. The sessions being considered include an introduction to the new OGF Redmine tools and options for improving and streamlining the OGF document production and review processes. (A tutorial about these procedures, which replaces the "OGF 101" usual introductory talk, is already scheduled right after the opening session as an aid for newcomers. These other sessions would augment this discussion to be designed for input and feedback, feature requests, community suggestions, etc., as well as exploration of the tools in more detail.) Other OGF News: Other OGF-related events are coming up, about which we will be sending you details shortly. We depend on energy and input from all of OGF to produce the best possible value and output for our community. We always get great feedback from others outside of OGF when they see the high quality of work that is produced by OGF, and are always looking for ways to improve our methods of communication and our output. If you don't have an OGF Redmine account yet, this system will be used to replace our SourceForge-based GridForge shortly, so please do sign up for an account on the new system at: http://redmine.ogf.org In addition to allowing us to leave large numbers of non-users of OGF who had accounts on the old system behind, the new system has many modern features to provide more or less the same functionality that we had in the old system with new tools, such as git repositories, an easier-to-use issue tracker, better integration with mailing lists, etc. We are also getting (great!) support for this for new groups and for old groups to transition to the new system from Andre Merzky in our OGF Operations team - so there is really no reason to delay if you have not already moved to the new OGF Redmine. Call For Papers: Journal of Grid Computing Special Issue: Interoperability, Federation, Frameworks and Application Programming Interfaces for IaaS Clouds The Special Issue on Interoperability, Federation, Frameworks and Application Programming Interfaces for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Clouds will highlight foundational standards and application programmer interfaces (APIs) useful for large-scale, scalable distributed computing. This issue will provide the community with dedicated forum for presenting new research, development, and deployment efforts in running interoperable, federated IaaS cloud systems. Upstream domain name services provider problem for ogf.org domains

Dear OGF work group members, Melissa Osner and Andre Merzky from our OGF operations team have alerted us to the fact that there are problems with the domain name resolution for our ogf.org domains at the present time. This is just a note to let you know that we are aware of the problem. This appears to be a problem with our upstream DNS provider. The OGF web and mail services are still running and service should be restored to normal once the upstream provider resolves their problems. Those curious about the status can check the following link. http://www.facebook.com/MonikerSnap/posts/443546375698105 or just wait for services to be returned. If the outage is extended, we will look into alternatives for providing access. Alan Sill

Dear OGF WG members, In addition to the upcoming OGF 36 just mentiones, at which we hope to see as many of you as possible in person, please note that OGF continues to participate in and to co-sponsor the ongoing activities of the "Cloud Plugfest" series, the next of which is coming up September 17-19, 2012 in Sophia Antipolis, France and Santa Clara, USA as below. Note that remote participation is possible for the Cloud Plugfest events. If you are interested in participating in testing of OCCI on its own or with other standards, such as CDMI, OVF, DMTF's CIMI, etc., please visit the Cloud Plugfest web site at the link below and sign up for the mailing lists and/or register to participate in the events. We are also interested in gathering use cases for cloud computing in scientific and organizational settings of use to our community. Dear OGF work groups, I know how much you and I enjoy getting together to solve problems in our community, and to make progress on the standards and technology that underly achieving such solutions. This is just a reminder that the schedule is progressing towards our get-together in Chicago, Illinois October 8-10, 2012, co-located with the IEEE e-Science 2012 conference, GLIF meeting, etc. In particular, the deadline for advance registration is September 8, less than two weeks away. Working groups should please make their meeting room requirements known to their group chairs and area directors. We have a Standards Council and Grid Forum Steering Group meeting this week (tomorrow) to discuss our session requests, which have to be finalized soon, as we expect the hotel meeting space to be very much in demand due to the ongoing multiple events. New document published: Firewall Traversal Protocol

All OGF documents (including any that are open for public comment) may be found here: http://www.ogf.org/gf/docs/ * GFD-R-P.196 "Firewall Traversal Protocol (FiTP)," R. Niederberger via the Inffrastructure FVGA-WG. Abstract: Firewalls control traffic flows between internal and external communication partners. Mostly traffic from inside to outside is allowed, but traffic coming from outside must be explicitly configured. The rules which packets may traverse the firewall and which not are normally configured manually by firewall administrators. To speed up such kind of access list changes, it would be desirable to dynamically signal access requests and automatically change those access lists. Though some protocols are inspectable by firewalls already like FTP, SIP and H.323, a general protocol, which could be used for signaling dynamically required access rules, is not available until now. This paper proposes a standard protocol, which would allow such signaling in a secure manner. Firewalls which have installed a corresponding inspection module could be configured automatically, which would ease the configuration of such systems a lot. The proposed protocol (FiTP) can be used in two ways. First of all, a firewall aware of FiTP, could automatically allow connections signaled by authorized users. Secondly, an intermediate solution could be implemented, so that firewalls unaware of FiTP could be configured by the server process, which is the end point of the FiTP control connection. Via this approach a smooth transition would be possible. Those of you working in US settings, or who have an interest in following or participating the US government's ongoing cloud computing roadmap standards project organized by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), for which participation is open to all interested parties, may be interested in the cloud testing activities described below, or in one or more of the associated interoperability testing projects. I would like to see good participation and effort from all portions of the OGF standards community in these and/or similar efforts in other settings, and encourage you to register and to participate. It should also be said that this restart effort has the approval and support of NIST people involved in the previous effort, and that we will make every effort to continue the previous good organizational and participation guidelines and principles. -- The IEEE has a new inter-cloud testbed that is being created to support the p2301 and p2302 efforts. -- OGF, ETSI and SNIA are cooperating on the new "Cloud Plugfest" series (http://cloudplugfest.org) which is on its 6th event iteration and continues with ETSI providing formal testing tools and logistical support to the ongoing testing series. -- The National Science Foundation supports the FutureGrid project,which is led by Indiana University with several US universities and large-scale computing centers (University of Chicago, University of Florida, San Diego Supercomputing Center, Texas Advanced Computing Center, University of Virginia,University of Tennessee, University of Southern California, Dresden, Purdue University, and Grid 5000) as partner sites. In this context we have proposed and had approved a Cloud Interoperability Testbed project, which is open for all interested parties to join. I believe that it would be an ongoing service to the community to leverage the above activities in a way similar to the previous SAJACC efforts in order to define, describe, conduct (where possible), communicate, disseminate and document cloud interoperability efforts where they are relevant to the NIST cloud computing standards project mission. To do this, I would like to propose that we schedule an interest meeting to take place in the usual (though not recently used!)
