Participation by OGF at the ETSI Cloud Standards Coordination meeting

Dear all, As you know, Dec. 4-5 there will be a very important European Cloud Standards Coordination meeting to be held in Cannes, France and hosted by ETSI, which has recently been named by the European Commission as the central body to coordinate cloud standards policy and development activities on its behalf in Europe. http://etsi.org/csc Our delegation there will be led by Dr. Wolfgang Ziegler. There will also be a formal signing ceremony for the OGF-ETSI MoU approved both by the OGF Board of Directors and recently by the ETSI Board at their General Assembly. For those who plan to attend, please enter your name on the associated list at http://doodle.com/sfkdeigazutxtf5i to select sessions in which you want to be active, and also please look for each other and for Wolfgang and other OGF members at the CSC meeting. We appreciate you keeping the flame of open participation in standards development active and bright at meetings such as this. Important Update on recent OGF activity

Dear OGF Colleagues, The last 6 months have seen a number of changes in OGF that we need to bring you up to date with, 1. Joel Replogle: After many years of dedicated work within OGF Joel left OGF at the end of July 2012 for a new position within a different standards community. We wish him well and thank him for all of his work over the years and being one of the main regular public faces of OGF. The tasks previously undertaken by Joel (event organisation, IT support, membership, finance, administration, public relations) have been redistributed to part-time OGF staff (covering finance, administration and IT) and senior members of the community. Any OGF event organisation will now be undertaken by the local host (generally an organisation within the OGF community) or the existing conference secretariat if we are a track in a community meeting (see the next point for details). 2. Event Strategy: At the townhall meeting in Chicago we discussed how OGF would evolve its event strategy. Instead of joint events (such as the OGF 35 in Delft and OGF 36 in Chicago) we would move to holding events under our own control (such as the upcoming OGF37) or as co-located tracks in relevant community events. More announcements will be made about these soon. Our next event will be OGF37 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, 10-13th March 2013 - more details soon. This will not change the event structure from a participation perspective (apart from possibly lowering the fees), but will reduce the financial risk and the organization overhead for OGF. 3. Restructuring. Those of you who have been with GGF and OGF for many years that as we scaled up we moved from a single steering group to a Board of Directors complemented by standards and community councils to name a few. Our activities within OGF have now focused down to just a few active areas within the standards council which can now be managed by a single group. Therefore the Board will reduce its role to just that is needed to meet our legal requirements as a non-profit organisation (with at least a chair, treasurer and secretary) and all event planning and strategy discussions will take place in the Standards Council (previously known as the Grid Forum Steering Group - GFSG). 4. Leadership. The new strategy and structure is also coinciding with a change in leadership activities. I will be stepping down as the Chair of the OGF Board as it comes to its end in the current form. Andrew Grimshaw has agreed to take on the role of Board Chair in its new minimalist form so as to discharge its legal supervision of the OGF organisation. Alan Sill has agreed to continue his role of coordinating the standards activity through the GFSG. 5. Finances. The concentration of our community activities into just a few active areas means that our events are a lot smaller than they were previously - but potentially just as if not more productive - and we have had to adjust our business model accordingly. This was previously based around both organisational membership fees and event revenue but allowed us to support a number of staff working full and part time. The new event strategy and other changes that have taken place over the last 18 months means that are operation costs are much lower and can be supported by our current organisational membership and event revenue. These changes have put stabilised our income and expenditure and made future OGF operation sustainable and will allow us to expand our activities from this stable base. 5. Community. So what do all these changes mean? OGF has always been driven by its community and its members. Our goal remains to enable you to find community consensus in the standards that you need to build interoperable services that provide access to distributed computing infrastructures of all shapes and forms. This has not and will not change. Your support and engagement is needed just as before. Either as an active group member, leading a technical activity as a working group chair, or helping to drive the future direction of the organisation as an Area Director. I would encourage you to continue your contributions at all levels and to continue to grow the number and variety of OGF activities and standards. Steven Newhouse Chair, OGF Board

Dear OGF members, Apologies for multiple messages to wg-all in one day (the one from Andre on OGF Redmine migration, and this one on events). I will try to compensate for this by squeezing announcements of two events - no, three! - in one message. The following announcement refers to the European Community Cloud Standards Coordination event to be held 4-5 Dec 2012 in Cannes, France. There will be a delegation from OGF attending (at least, multiple people have told us that they are interested in going) with official representation for OGF provided by Wolfgang Ziegler of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI), who is our OGF Area Director for Applications. Please contact Wolfgang for further information if you plan to attend. In addition, there will be the seventh in the series of Cloud Plugfest events, which are hands-on developer-oriented activities designed to promote interchange of information among developers on actual implementations in software of standards and to encourage exchange of practical implementation information, 10-12 Dec 2012 in Sophia-Antipolis, France with remote locations in Durham, North Carolina and optionally Boulder, CO, USA and Tokyo, Japan. Remote participation IS allowed but you have to register at http://cloudplugfest.org for this event. Note: while OGF is one of the sponsors for this event, along with ETSI and SNIA, this is a developer-oriented activity, not an OGF event and is not subject to the usual OGF restrictions (just like participation in any other general meeting). Instead, you are participating on your own just as you would do in a project meeting or other outside activity. The same consideration applies to participation in the CSC meeting and Cloudscape conference mentioned below. Finally, please put on your calendar to participate in the next in the series of Cloudscape meetings to be held 27-28 2013 in Brussels, Belgium. Many of you may already have been contacted to participate to represent your projects, and of course we always appreciate having OGF standards and processes highlighted in any presentation that you make. It is extremely important to highlight the progress that development and use of OGF standards allows you to make, and to come to OGF events to inexact with the community that is working on these topics in order to make this progress. OGF encompasses a thriving and active organization and community, so please do not be shy in highlighting the importance of OGF cloud- and grid-related standards in these and other meetings that you may attend! Document Migration GridForge -> Redmine

Dear OGF Groups, Most groups have by now migrated their operations from GridForge to Redmine. Over the last days, we have been migrating documents from the various GridForge projects to the respective Redmine projects. We plan a similar migration of tracker items (sorry, we can't give a timeline for that, yet). A couple of notes about the document migration: - The documents (incl. the folder structure) have been moved into a separate folder on your redmine project's document module. That folder is named 'gridforge'. That way, the migrations would not collide with existing redmine documents. Note that you can move folders and documents to other folders, as needed. - For some GridForge projects, we do not have equivalent redmine projects. The respective documents have been moved to a separate archival project: http://redmine.ogf.org/dmsf/migration-archive Please let us know if you want to have access to that project, (it is publicly readable though), and if you want to have parts of that archive migrated to specific redmine projects. - We are aware of some problems, but decided not to delay the migration as several groups are waiting for the documents. Please let us know if you encounter faulty migrations. In particular, you may encounter folders which cannot be opened. Please pop me a note, and I'll make sure that this is getting fixed timely. Those problems should be rare though (so far 2 documents made trouble, out of O(100) checked). It is very likely that for many redmine accounts, permissions are not yet set correctly. In particular, chair and secretary roles may not yet be assigned to your account. Please let me know when you have trouble with permissions, and I'll flip the preciousss bitsesss... Dear OGF, we encountered and service interruption on one of our main machines which lasted from Friday until Sunday, which brought down the www server, mailing lists, and our central database. We are not sure if all emails made it through to the lists during that time period, and would like to ask you to check the respective list archives, as needed.
