Dear GGF members,
I wanted to take a moment and tell you about some important news
regarding GGF and our liaison with the Enterprise Grid Alliance (EGA).
Don Deutsch, President of EGA will be sending out a similar message to
EGA members.
Over the past year EGA and GGF have discussed leveraging the strengths
of both organizations to deliver greater value to the growing grid
community. Today we are announcing that the leadership of the GGF and
the EGA Board of Directors have both agreed to explore the possibilities
of an expanded collaboration.
Teams from both organizations will meet together over the next several
weeks to develop a detailed framework for extending the current
collaboration while retaining the principles on which both organizations
are based. The results from these discussions are not predetermined;
both organizations are open to a wide range of outcomes, up to and
including merger.
We remain committed to advancing the standardization and adoption of
grid technologies across all market segments, and to delivering greater
value to our respective members.
GGF is interested in your comments and in any further questions you
might have. Additional information is contained at the following URL:
http://www.ggf.org/Announcement/ggf_announce.php You can also send an
email to me directly at linesch(a)ggf.org
Thanks for your continued support and hard work on behalf of GGF and our
mission.
All the best,
Mark Linesch

3. GGF16 Community Call for Participation
Building on the success of Community Programs at GGF14 and GGF15, the
Community Program at GGF16 seeks to build new and strengthen existing
communities of interest in GGF. GGF is comprised of a number of "communities
of interest" who either are users of grids in their domain or develop
innovative approaches to perceived roadblocks to the adoption of grids.
Community activities may run in parallel with other GGF16 activities but
every attempt will be made in scheduling to minimize unnecessary clashes.
Send us your suggestions by visiting us at

GGF NOMCOM 2006 Call for Volunteers
The GGF Nominations Committee 2006 needs your help!
We are looking for volunteers for NomCom 2006, the GGF nominating
committee
that is responsible for recommending candidates to fill open positions
on
the Grid Forum Steering Group (GFSG). Typically, one third of the GFSG
is
selected each year. This year we expect to have to fill 12 positions,
although this can change due to the creation or elimination of
positions by
the GFSG, or by resignations, transfers, etc.
The provisional list of positions to be filled this year is:
VC Standards
AD Architecture
AD Data
AD Infrastructure
AD Management
AD Security
AD Industry Applications
AD Major Grid Projects
AD Grid Operations
AD Community Affairs
AD Events
AD Finance
The nominating process is modelled after IETF RFC 3777, "IAB and IESG
Selection, Confirmation, and Recall Process: Operation of the Nominating
and Recall Committees". IETF RFC 3777 supersedes IETF RFC 2727 which the
GGF GFSG adopted, with minor revisions, in 2003.
The first phase in the NonCom process is to establish this year's
nominating committee; this is being done by this year's NomCom Chair,
Sven
van den Berghe, along with Dietmar Erwin, past Chair, and Ramin
Yahyapour,
GFSG liaison.
To qualify for the NomCom, a volunteer must have attended 2 of the last
4
GGF meetings. NomCom members are barred from nomination to the GFSG
during
the year they serve, even if they later resign. Responsibilities and
expected time commitment are outlined below (see #2 below), as are the
confidentiality needs (see #3 below).
Community members who feel they meet these requirements and are
interested
in helping are encouraged to volunteer.
Please e-mail your name, affiliation, telephone number(s), and email
address to Sven van den Berghe, Sven.vandenBerghe(a)uk.fujitsu.com, not
later than Saturday November 26, 2005 (midnight UTC). Please put
"NomCom
volunteer" in the subject line.
Volunteering for the NomCom is a way in which you can serve the GGF
community. We encourage you to help!
Best regards,
Sven van den Berghe, Chair (non-voting member)
Dietmar Erwin, past Chair (non-voting member)
Ramin Yahyapour, GFSG liaison (non-voting member)
NOMCOM Details
1. Nominating Committee Selection Process
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The call for volunteers will be open for at least 30 days. To qualify
as a
volunteer, a person must have attended 2 of the last 4 GGF meetings.
Note
that this deviates from the 3 out of 5 rule in RFC3777.
For the NomCom to work as it should, the pool of volunteers from which
members are chosen must be as large as possible. The more people who
volunteer, the better the chance of obtaining a random yet
representative
cross section of the GGF population.
Once the call for volunteers closes, the list of volunteers will be
posted
to http://www.ggf.org/nomcom/. The GGF secretariat will then verify the
eligibility of each volunteer.
The results of the selection will be announced the week of December 13,
2005.
Ten (10) NomCom voting members will be chosen at random from the pool of
volunteers in accordance with RFC 2777, "Publicly Verifiable Nomcom
Random
Selection". Two sources of randomness will be used:
1) The runs scored by the batsmen during the 3rd One Day International
between New Zealand and Australia played on Saturday 10 December 2005
(as
published on www.cricinfo.com)
2) The results of the drawing of UK National Lottery on Saturday 10
December 2005("Lotto" draw number 1040, all 7 balls, results available
at
www.national-lottery.co.uk)
If an insufficient number of people volunteer before November 26th, an
extension will be announced and new "sources of randomness" will be
posted
to the NomCom site.
2. Time Commitment and Responsibilities of NomCom Members
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
A volunteer should be able to commit 2-3 hours per week for at most 8
months (the process will start in January 2006 with the aim of
completion
by the start of September 2006).
The task involves the following activities:
- Read candidate statements
- Participate in a regular conference call (about 1 hour long,
initially
fortnightly, rising to weekly at the end of the selection process)
- Attend GGF meetings held during selection process.
- Conduct interviews with candidates (telephone and face to face)
- Speak to GGF participants about potential candidates, the job
requirements or the process.
3. Confidentiality
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
All NomCom deliberations and supporting information that relates to
specific nominees, candidates, and confirmed candidates is confidential.
The NomCom members will be exposed to confidential information as a
result
of their deliberations, their interactions with those they consult, and
from those who provide requested supporting information. All members are
expected to handle this information in a manner consistent with its
sensitivity.

What are the detailed delivery schedules for OGSA and OGSA-related
specifications?
What are the dependencies between OGSA specifications and other standards
such as key web-services specifications?
What is the relationship between the OGSA process, OGSA specifications and
profiles, and OGSA software?
What does the OGSA brand mean and how are OGSA conformance and compliance
measured?
What open-source software projects are committed to implementing OGSA
standards?
The document and other recently published documents may be found at:
http://www.ggf.org/ggf_docs_final.htm.
2. 15 Documents in Public Comment
2005 has been an incredibly productive year for GGF as is evidenced by the
number of documents currently in public comment. Nine different GGF groups
have submitted 15 documents to the GGF Editor and the GGF Steering Group
has given initial release to gain comments from the broader community. To
see a listing of these documents, download and provide comments, please

[GGF15] group sessions (3-6 October).
The Enterprise Program, themed "Grid in Action: Explore. Adopt. Deploy",
will contain keynote presentations and panels exploring the benefits of
grid technologies, how to adopt grids via a pilot project, and how to
deploy grids more broadly in an enterprise. Attendees will hear grid
deployment experiences from companies in several industries including
entertainment, finance, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, manufacturing,
semiconductor design, and others. A link to the preliminary program is
available at: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_events_schedule_ggf15.htm
The Community Program emphasizes the applications and operation of grids in
eScience and industrial contexts at a more technical level. The program
