And their house will be graphically circled. On one level, the project, sort of the ultimate in customized publishing, is unsurprising: of course a magazine knows where its subscribers live. But it is still a remarkable demonstration of the growing number of ways databases can be harnessed. Apart from the cover image, several advertisements are customized to reflect the recipient's particulars. Nick Gillespie, editor in chief of Reason, said the magazine, with an editorial mission of "Free Minds, Free Markets,'' used the stunt to illustrate the cover article about the power and importance of databases. "Our story is man bites dog," Mr. Gillespie said. "Everybody, including our magazine, has been harping on the erosion of privacy and the fears of a database nation. It is a totally legit fear. But they make our lives unbelievably easier as well, in terms of commercial transactions, credit, you name it." Rodger Cosgrove, president of Entremedia, a direct marketing firm and a member of Reason's board, assisted in coming up with a program that allows the subscriber list to be integrated with satellite photographs. He also worked with Xeikon, the manufacturer of the printer that made the endless customization possible. Netscape 6 ruined all my pictures?

I need help and I don't know who to ask - I'm VERY new at this. I downloaded Netscape 6 and it has ruined all the pictures I had scanned and saved when I had Netscape 4. Can you tell me how to fix it? I tried to re-download 4 but I guess once you have 6 you can't go back! Every picture I try to print now comes out all black. Any suggestions? I appreciate any help you can give me or someplace you can tell me to go to look the info up. Please keep in mind the instructions you give me have to be VERY basic, I know nothing!!! The links at the bottom need to be moved to top or the side for easy viewing. Kind of plain. Would recommend a few more well made graphics and a redesign on the table. ~~~~ I love the URL for your site, and did a lot of smiling at the cartoons and jokes. I would have liked to have seen some personal input from you - what made you start this site, why, for how long you've been doing this. With a personal touch and a feeling of getting to know you I would be more inclined to visit again, like visiting an old friend. Your site doesn't give me that feeling. The layout was good, and the content was excellent, it just felt like it was missing something. ~~~~ The tabbed interface is nice. But the center table with the border looks off center. Perhaps making the table more centered and higher/wider, maybe adding a bgcolor would help. ~~~~ This is a very crisp and clean site. Colorful without being too flashy. On the pages I would recommend moving the menu with the links to the top of the page - I first thought I had to use my back button to keep going back to the choices. I was impressed with the selection of games, jokes, and everything you had on your site. I bookmarked it to return to, and that's something you could include (directions on bookmarking your site). ~~~~ Fun Site which was easy to navigate and pages were clean- looking. Had some fun playing some of the games which I hadn't seen before. Great site for a bit of relaxation... without any HYPE or hard sell. I think this would be a great site to include your contact information, and a form for your visitors to submit ideas to you on new things to include. ~~~~ Too many clashing colors.  The links at the bottom need to be moved to top or the side for easy viewing.  Kind of plain.  Would recommend a few more well made graphics and a redesign on the table. ~~~~ I love the URL for your site, and did a lot of smiling at the cartoons and jokes.  I would have liked to have seen some personal input from you - what made you start this site, why, for how long you've been doing this.  With a personal touch and a feeling of getting to know you I would be more inclined to visit again, like visiting an old friend. Your site doesn't give me that feeling. The layout was good, and the content was excellent, it just felt like it was missing something. ~~~~ The tabbed interface is nice. But the center table with the border looks off center. Perhaps making the table more centered and higher/wider, maybe adding a bgcolor would help. ~~~~ This is a very crisp and clean site. Colorful without being too flashy. On the pages I would recommend moving the menu with the links to the top of the page - I first thought I had to use my back button to keep going back to the choices. Nobody can be this dumb and live long. There's no person called "market", therefore it has no "interest". It's a decision of the current resource owners - and when demand increases (as in the case of a major disaster), they *have to* increase their prices until the supply is equal to the demand (if they don't, the first buyers will sell what they bought on the "black market" to those who value it more). Basic economics, even US public schools must teach that much. The stores might have been "depleted", but the high prices would have made it profitable to sell food there, and someone would have done that. Furthermore, the expectation of high prices due to an impeding disaster would have created incentives for "hoarding" - that is, gathering as many resources as possible, which would have attracted imports BEFORE the disaster. Price fixing destroys any incentive for spending now in order to profit later. Dumb americans. Mark

We need some information about why this newsletter will be worthwhile to subscribe to. ~~~~ Dennis - I took a look at your site, and have recommendations for improving your page. 1- I use Internet Explorer and view web pages with my text size set to 'smaller'. The text you used was quite large, like a font used for a heading for all the text. By making the text size smaller it wouldn't feel like you were screaming at me. Also, the background was just too much. 2- There were spelling errors in the text. Often it might be difficult for you to spot these yourself if you see the page all the time, but have a friend look it over. Spelling errors make the page look unprofessional. 3- Offer a sample of your newsletter so people can see what it looks like before they subscribe. Also, if you are asking for a person to give you their email address, you MUST have a privacy policy and let them know they can unsubscribe. 4- Think about adding a form for people to subscribe to the newsletter. It looks more professional than just offering an email address to send to. 5- Offer information about yourself, and the kinds of information your newsletter contains. Maybe extend your site to include back issues or an archive to see what information you have offered in the past. 6- Build another page for 'sponsoring info' and put prices on that page. Remove all pricing information from the home page. ~~~~ I feel that the background is a little too bold and busy for the text. I also believe that the text is too large which makes it difficult to read quickly, and forces the reader to scroll down unnecessarily. I noticed some spelling errors, and I think that a link to the classifieds site should be provided, and online payments should be accepted. A site that sells advertising should have advertisments on it! ~~~~ This is a very clear site with nothing interfering with the message. I did not like the background colour, however that is personal, it did not detract from the information. I was tempted to sign up for the newsletter but would have liked a link to see a current issue. There was an error in the wording (a word missed) which needs correction and I think the fonts could be smaller. It is necessary to subscribe to the webmaster's newsletter to see what he's doing, and it doesn't seem to me to be a way to get people to visit. I wouldn't, for example. He claims to have lots of tidbits of information that, he says, we probably didn't know, and this is possible, but in my opinion, he would be better served if he at least put some of the things out there for all to see - when the appetite, so to speak, if he want people to subscribe. As it is, I would not bother. ~~~~ What does one expect from a site like netsbestinfo? Some useful resources and some useful tips and also some forms of easy advertisement on the net. But what we get here is a newsletter with the owner (whose email reads damorgarjr(a)yahoo.com) asking us to subscribe us to his newsletter for a free 4-line ad. He also tells of paid category of advertisements. This is all we get from a site which has a grand title. Even the information about the newsletter is hardly impressive and is presented in about 35-to-40 points size which gets difficult to read. ~~~~ A neat enough site but the background could be a little hard on the eyes. There is only really one problem with this page - its just an advertisement for a newsletter. No, scratch that, its an advertisement to place free ads in a newsletter. A bold enough move perhaps but I learned hardly anything about the newsletter itself and immediately started worrying about getting a flood of ads to my email account so I didn't even subscribe.
