I'm changing my website and want to use pictures for the links to other pages. But, someone told me I should still put a 'click here' underneath all the pictures. To me, this removes all purpose of using the pictures. How can I get across that you click on the pictures to get to other pages without coming right out and saying so? For example, I have a page with actor and actress information and just want to have a picture of my favorite stars to click on and change the picture every couple of days. Also in the second or third paragraph is a misspelled word which should be "first-come" not as shown on the page. I feel a sample of the type of information offered in the newsletter should be displayed on the page as well as a sample of the free ads offered on the site. I will probably submit a free ad just to see the content of the newsletter. As has been mentioned many times, some information about the person doing the page is always good. We need some information about why this newsletter will be worthwhile to subscribe to. ~~~~ Dennis - I took a look at your site, and have recommendations for improving your page. 1- I use Internet Explorer and view web pages with my text size set to 'smaller'. The text you used was quite large, like a font used for a heading for all the text. By making the text size smaller it wouldn't feel like you were screaming at me. Also, the background was just too much. 2- There were spelling errors in the text. Often it might be difficult for you to spot these yourself if you see the page all the time, but have a friend look it over. Spelling errors make the page look unprofessional. 3- Offer a sample of your newsletter so people can see what it looks like before they subscribe. Also, if you are asking for a person to give you their email address, you MUST have a privacy policy and let them know they can unsubscribe. 4- Think about adding a form for people to subscribe to the newsletter. It looks more professional than just offering an email address to send to. 5- Offer information about yourself, and the kinds of information your newsletter contains. Maybe extend your site to include back issues or an archive to see what information you have offered in the past. 6- Build another page for 'sponsoring info' and put prices on that page. Remove all pricing information from the home page. ~~~~ I feel that the background is a little too bold and busy for the text. I also believe that the text is too large which makes it difficult to read quickly, and forces the reader to scroll down unnecessarily. I noticed some spelling errors, and I think that a link to the classifieds site should be provided, and online payments should be accepted. A site that sells advertising should have advertisments on it! ~~~~ This is a very clear site with nothing interfering with the message. I did not like the background colour, however that is personal, it did not detract from the information. I was tempted to sign up for the newsletter but would have liked a link to see a current issue. There was an error in the wording (a word missed) which needs correction and I think the fonts could be smaller. Overall a non-confusing site which makes a nice change. *cheers* ~~~~ Could use a better background and the fonts are very large, there also are errors in the following paragraphs : "first com-first serve" and "to place a sponsor advertisement, send your to my email" ~~~~ A single page site. It is necessary to subscribe to the webmaster's newsletter to see what he's doing, and it doesn't seem to me to be a way to get people to visit. I wouldn't, for example. He claims to have lots of tidbits of information that, he says, we probably didn't know, and this is possible, but in my opinion, he would be better served if he at least put some of the things out there for all to see - when the appetite, so to speak, if he want people to subscribe. As it is, I would not bother. ~~~~ What does one expect from a site like netsbestinfo? Some useful resources and some useful tips and also some forms of easy advertisement on the net. But what we get here is a newsletter with the owner (whose email reads damorgarjr(a)yahoo.com) asking us to subscribe us to his newsletter for a free 4-line ad. He also tells of paid category of advertisements. This is all we get from a site which has a grand title. Even the information about the newsletter is hardly impressive and is presented in about 35-to-40 points size which gets difficult to read. ~~~~ A neat enough site but the background could be a little hard on the eyes. There is only really one problem with this page - its just an advertisement for a newsletter. No, scratch that, its an advertisement to place free ads in a newsletter. A bold enough move perhaps but I learned hardly anything about the newsletter itself and immediately started worrying about getting a flood of ads to my email account so I didn't even subscribe. Presumably you'd want to get people to sign up so might I suggest splitting the page into the newsletter itself, perhaps a sample issue, a privacy policy and a promise not to drown in ads and then click for more info on your free ads. ________________________________________ VOTE ON YOUR FAVORITE WEBSITE DESIGN! Exactly at which point does a war (any war) stop being defensive because according to the history books the US has never fought an aggressive war. Ian Grigg's Crypto Fiction Choices

http://www.iang.org/crypto_fiction/ Crypto Fiction Crypto novels are not that common. It's an esoteric subject that remains too small to even justify a niche title. Most of the treatments relate to only fringe interests. There is a bit of a revival in crypto interest within the 90's science fiction genre. This can be traced back to authors who are influenced by the net, and geographically, it's clear that the main stars in this revival hail from or are influenced by the bay area and the cypherpunks movement. For what it's worth, and to generate some commissions for Cryptix, I list here some crypto novels I've read. I rate them with bits of entropy, as a sort of reverse correlation with relevance. This rating isn't necessarily a view that this book is good or bad, just that it has a valued combination of readability and cryptology. If you're looking for a present for that pesky relative that keeps asking "so, what is it that you do?" then you may find the answer below. Cryptonominon The leading light in the crypto novel scene has to be Cryptonomicon. This book, the fourth by trail blazing net author Neal Stephenson, is recent, having been published in mid 1999, and remains the only financial cryptography novel I have come across. Cryptonomicon is an achievment, with a deserved 5 random bits of entropy, and it will become the novel against which all others are compared. In brief, Randy Waterhouse and his startup companions embark on laying fibre around the Phillipines. Whilst building, new opportunities arise, chief of which is the combination of a local Sultan who wishes to build a data haven, and a rumour of a mountain of lost gold. What lifts this book out of the ordinary, and indeed, camoflages the fairly simple plot, is the two intertwined threads separated by two generations. Randy's grandfather and a WWII team of crypto scientists work on dampening the Axis' ability to detect the Enigma cracks, coincidentally laying foundations for Randy's attempts to historically decrypt his forbears' trail. This historical story is fascinating, it takes the Enigma story well beyond what has been covered elsewhere. The crypto content is superb. Mathematical basies, Turing and his bicycle, entropy, ciphers, are all woven into the story in a fashion that anyone with high school mathematics could understand. Cryptonomicon has a deeper underlying significance that most will have written off as plot. Along the chase, Randy and his mates discover the opportunity of setting up a private currency, nominally based on the alleged gold. In crisis-ravaged Asia, where currencies fell as systemic failure swept through the banking system, gold- backed currencies, issued over the net, and cryptographically protected from all attackers, is the perfect entrepot forthe issuance of private money. Recall that private currencies disappeared about a century ago, as the newfangled Central Bank idea, born out of Britain, swept the civilised world to mark the 20th century as one of government money and government inflation. For various reasons which we'll gloss over here - read the book - the time of private currencies has come again. But it was not in the prediction of a new financial world that the subtelty of Stephenson's research, and indeed unnamed advisors, shows. It is in the fact that the model he presents for a gold-backed currency is state of the art, in an art that was forgotten a hundred years ago, and indeed was only poorly understood then. Readers could even be forgiven for accusing the art to be stateless, if it wasn't for the existance of at least one tiny Internet private currency, backed by gold. It was these guys, the e-gold private currency, who airshipped me a copy to read and respond. But there is no response possible, as Stephenson got it right. Prospective private currency issuers now have a novel that will save them from countless mistakes, and I now have an answer to that question, "so, what is it that you're doing that takes you so far from home?" Enigma In all the fictional writings of cryptology, the Enigma machine takes pride of place. Enigma, is no different, but touches little on the machine itself. Robert Harris, author of Fatherland, presents a story of spies and intrigue set amongst the paranoic secrecy of Bletchley Park. Like Cryptonomicon, the historical protagonist is a mathematician at the core of the code breaking effort. This story is cryptologically valuable for its description of Bletchley Park, even to the workflow and passage of the information through the now quaint series of human I/O devices, computers, and analysts. As a novel, it is well written and entirely readable, falling within the class of WWII / spies / detectives, and I rate it with 3 bits of entropy. The Last Lieutenant Corregidor features yet again in this novel about the collapse of the island fortress and the plight of the last remaining coding officer. Showing more of the Allies side, The Last Lieutenant, portrays a story of espionage against the communications infrastructure of the Americans in the Pacific. A lot of background, a lot of machinery, and an inside view of the messages sent. Little actual cryptography, but worth some 3 bits of entropy. If you like daring war stories, this one has it all! A Fire Upon The Deep I think Vernor Vinge would have to be my favourite science fiction author, just pipping out Stephenson. A Fire Upon The Deep is a tour de force of 90's science fiction. It actually has very little crypto in it, so it is hard for me to award it more than 3 bits of entropy. The main players ship out of a port with a third part of a one time pad. The other two parts ship via other means - a security precaution. The one time slice never makes it to its destination, but is used later in a last ditch effort to establish comms with the good guys, whilst being chased by the bad guys across the universe. This is not a funny book, but Vinge's humour comes through with a single crypto joke which still makes me laugh. To enjoy the joke, you'll have to buy the book. The Enigma This book is about the machine, and therefore deserves its title. Written by Michael Barak, The Enigma is the story of a con man who is offered a 'dirty dozen' deal: go to Europe and steal an Enigma, and all charges will be dropped. It's actually quite readable as a story, but the crypto component is low to non-existant, unless you like reading descriptions of how the Enigma was constructed. Still, publicizing a system for assassinating political figures, and expecting said political figures to abide by the 1st Amendment protections regarding free speech, is stupidity beyond stupidity. If the government wants to squash you, they can do so -- they can seize all your assets under RICO (including all assets that would be needed in order to hire a lawyer to get your property back), crooked cops can lie under oath and say they found drugs in your possession with little recourse, and innocent people are sent to jail every day because it allows some harried police lieutenant to close out a file and look like a hero to the general public for "solving a crime" -- according to one study by a university law school, up to 70 of the people convicted of crimes are actually innocent, and were convicted because they were (illegally) deprived of the opportunity to conduct a defense (due to rampant underfunding of public defenders offices, and the RICO statutes which allow the government to seize all funds that could be used to conduct a defense, most people who are arrested do not even get to see their lawyer before the start of the trial -- in blatant disregard of the Constitution of the United States). And nobody cares, because the police are careful to target "those" people -- people who are poor, who are ignorant, or whose actions can be easily spun to make them appear dangerous or insane. Jim Bell wants to take on the Feds? What a moron! 2) Jim Bell also comes across as rather paranoid. Of COURSE hes being observed (at least occasionally) by federal law enforcement agencies. He is an ex-con, for cryin out loud, whenever a law is broken, the law comes looking at ex-cons first cause theyre the most likely cause of a law being broken. Its not paranoid to notice this, but its certainly paranoid to take the actions he has taken about that observation. I guess being held on trumped-up charges for his first conviction (i.e., possession of household chemicals now illegal!) warped his head, but what did he expect when he published a paper describing a system for rewarding assassination of political figures? I mean, what, he thought the 1st Amendment was something other than toilet paper that law enforcement officers wipe their rears with every day? (Actually, they usually dont care about the 1st, its the 4th, with their unconstitutional seizures of property under the RICO statute, that they wipe their rears with every day, but still...). 3) He is being held without bail. This appears to be a new tactic used by law enforcement to punish people that they know they dont have enough evidence to convict. For example, in Wilmington, North Carolina, a student commented about the Columbine killings, "those kids were stupid, if they wanted to kill jocks they should have started at the gym, not at the library." He was jailed without bail on charges of "making threatening statements". His parents were irate, because typical punishment in North Carolina for first offense of "making threatening statements" is a $500 fine and probation. The judge and sheriffs office kept him jailed without bail as "being a dangerous threat", in full defiance of the Constitution of the United States and its constitutional guarantees of freedom of speech and due process, because they wanted to "teach a lesson". They taught a lesson, alright -- thats one kid who will never trust government again. 4) Its interesting that federal law enforcement agencies view the identification of their officers as a threat. It reminds me of fascist police officers in Serbia who taped over their badges so that the demonstrators could not identify the people who were depriving them of their rights. It appears that even identifying and filing a public complaint against a federal law enforcement officer (i.e., publishing a copy of that complaint on your web site as well as via "official channels") could be construed as a "terrorist threat" under the federal statute that was quoted. I think that many Americans are rather sanguine about their freedoms. We have forgotten that only fifty years before, a government-sanctioned and government-enforced system of apartheid systematically and with full government force deprived civil rights from a full 1/5th of the population of the United States. We have forgotten that, only 30 years ago, citizens of the United States were being killed by the National Guard for the crime of being near a demonstration against a war they disagreed with. Freedom is not something that is built into our country. Freedom must be purchased with blood, the blood of four little girls killed by those who bombed a church in Birmingham Alabama, the blood of civil rights workers murdered in cold blood in Mississippi with the full knowledge of government officials of the State of Mississippi, the blood of anti-war demonstrators in Ohio. Today we have forever deprived a full 1/5th of the black male population of many cities of the right to vote, with full government sponsorship and enforcement, but for some reason nobody seems to see it because government has been careful to target "those" people, people whose skin color is "not like ours", those nasty smelly poor people, and other such "undesirables". Apparently Americans believe that civil rights guaranteed by the Constitution only apply if youre white and middle-class. I think that many Americans are also sanguine about their continued freedom. All I have to note is that in 1984, Yugoslavs rejoiced in the afterglow of the Sarajevo Olympics, a glowing testament to their democratic government and modern attitudes and sensibilities. Yugoslavia rejoiced in joining the community of modern European nations. Their booming economy even sold cars here in the United States (the infamous Yugo). A scant 10 years later, Yugoslavia was in the grip of a fascist dictatorship who used "ethnic cleansing" to tighten his grip on power, its economy was in ruins, and the nation had broken up into ethnic pieces warring upon each other. The lesson: a booming democracy can turn into a fascist dictatorship in almost no time at all. Whoops, I guess this message puts me on the governments "terrorist hit list". Note to feds -- the only guns I own are a couple of antique shotguns inherited from my father and my grandfather, the only dangerous chemicals I own are normal household cleaners, the only cyber-terrorism Ive ever advocated is the ghastly notion of calling public officials damned liars on the Web when they lie to us. I am a liberal in the classic sense, who believes that government has a purpose and is necessary for the furthering of the general good but that its powers must be limited and carefully controlled by the people in order to avoid turning into a fascist dictatorship that only pretends to be a democratic republic (thus my distaste when our government violates the Constitution of the United States with willful disdain). I am also a committed pacifist who believes that all killing is morally wrong, even when done in self defense or in war time (I do recognize that man is an animal who like all animals possesses a survival instinct and thus killing in self defense must be expected, but animal instinct is not a moral defense).
