Network question

All, A question has arisen regarding the network provision at OGF20 and EGEE-UF 2. Is anyone likely to be running a demonstration in the exhibition that will involve incoming connections? We need to be able to provide up to 900 or so IP addresses. If all connections will be outgoing, it should be possible to do this using Network Address Translation. If some connections will be incoming, then it is likely that real IP addresses will be needed. An early response will be very helpful. Obtaining 900+ real IP addresses will require some negotiation and cannot be guaranteed at this stage. Adopting a hybrid solution of NAT for wireless and real IP addresses for wired ethernet to the booths is possible, but would add complexity to the network design and configuration. Perhaps a Talk on whether Europe is ahead or behind in Grid computing?

Dave, The new Enter the Grid as well as Simon Forge's report saying there should be a European Grid Agency have raised the point about where Europe stands relative to the US and Japan in adopting Grids. I could present materials comparing some of the main industries -- autos, aerospace and possibly pharma and finance adoption of Grids in the US, Europe and Japan from 2003-4 to 2010 -- in a talk in the first session on Setting the Scene. I think I am the only one with this type of data. In addition, my interviews bring out some interesting trends in the industries I have interviewed, such as when the main benefits will be gained and when Grid deployment will accelerate or slow. Interestingly, my data suggest that rather than a flattening after the next 3 years of Grid adoption, as assumed in the Forge paper and in the Insight Research estimates of European Grid growth, there would be an acceleration in Grid deployment. This would be linked to Grids growing as SOA s are deployed, Web services use grows, and semantic web technology expands. It is also a result of the fact that many firms believe that they will begin to achieve large economic and time-to-market gains later in this decade. Parenthetically, this also suggests that there is probably less of a need for a European Grid Agency and possibly more usefulness in focusing efforts on standards bodies such as OGF and other initiatives such as EGEE and GCN. So this might be a good opportunity to offer some contrast to other views on where Europe's use of Grids is at the present time and where it is going -- I have obtained forecasts in many of the interviews I have done with end users. People interested in submitting an abstract are cordially invited to send it as soon as possible, since the Programme Committee has already commenced the processing of abstracts and is developing the User Forum programme. We are taking this opportunity to remind you that the second User Forum will be co-located with the OGF20 meeting in May in Manchester, UK. Keynote speakers

Yesterday we proposed some criteria to help select keynote speakers: - Good speaker - Presenting a vision, based in actual work - Able to generalise the subject area Also, we want the keynotes to cover both enterprise and e-Science. We could have one keynote addressing each or each keynote could address elements of both. Perhaps the best way is for the keynotes to focus on issues that apply across multiple areas, e.g. data distribution, large-scale management of resources, security, ... I've arranged a call for next Tuesday to discuss suggestions for keynote speakers and decide who will be approach. I listened to the Robin Saxby talk at the URL that Malcolm circulated. He's a good speaker and could give a broad view. The topic would have to be different for our audience but ARM have a working international Grid and of course could address trends in hardware, virtualisation and mobile computing, while bringing a broad background via the IET. In discussing Credit Suisse yesterday, the point was raised that they have given this talk before and we would like them to present work since then. People felt that Stephen Calvert of GSK would make a good speaker. Geoffrey put forward several suggestions for USA speakers. A speaker from Lilly would seem appropriate. I know Kelvin Groegemeier gave a good keynote at the UK e-Science AHM a year or two ago. Would it be a good idea to invite Ian Foster to give a keynote? Robert Gurney would be a good speaker; we had a question about whether he would generalise his material for be of wide interest. People felt that the suggested telco speakers wouldn't be appropriate for a keynote.
