OGF is participating in the joint conference of CloudWorld, Next Generation Data Center (NGDC), and OpenSource World going on now, August 12-13, 2009 in San Francisco, CA, USA. OGF's VP of Standards, Chris Smith, is presenting a talk Thursday August 13, from 9:15am - 10:00am in room 3004: From Grid to Cloud: Leveraging Distributed Computing Technologies in Moving to the Cloud There are many challenges in the minds of enterprise CIO's about the opportunities that cloud presents. On the one hand, the opportunity to flex resources to meet demand, particularly with pay as you go, addresses the challenge of sizing and capital expenditure for occasional events. Another class of challenge is the security and management of key corporate resources, for audit and compliance purposes. So why would the typical CIO be interested in throwing caution to the wind with a third party service provider? This session will feature discussion of the potential for grid middleware to provide a vehicle for the development of private clouds, leveraging existing resources and infrastructure with the potential for extending services into the cloud using commercial suppliers. Much work has been done in the grid middleware community to demonstrate the viability of grid as an application, an extensible platform and an infrastructure in the cloud, thus providing an effective "on ramp" to the cloud for the existing user base. IEEE e-Science 2009 Call for papers deadline extension

Hello, The fifth IEEE e-Science conference will be held in Oxford, UK from Dec 9-11. The meeting coincides with the UK e-Science All Hands Meeting that will be held from Dec 7-9th, 2009. **Submission Deadline Extended to 7th August 2009** The following topics concerning e-Science are of interest, but not restrictive: 1. Arts, Humanities and e-Social Science 2. Bioinformatics and Health 3. Physical Sciences and Engineering 4. Climate & Earth Sciences 5. Research Tools, Workflow and systems 6. Digital Repositories and Data Management 7. eScience Practice and Education Authors are invited to submit papers with unpublished, original work of not more than 8 pages of double column text using single spaced 10 point size on 8.5 x 11 inch pages, as per IEEE 8.5 x 11 manuscript guidelines. Authors should submit a PDF or PostScript (level 2) file that will print on a PostScript printer. Papers conforming to the above guidelines can be submitted through the e-Science 2009 paper submission system It is expected that the proceedings will be published by the IEEE CS Press, USA and will be made available online through the IEEE Digital Library.
