UR-WG telcons

At GGF16, we agreed to hold some telcons to progress the changes to the UR-WG spec. I think we need to start these now. The proposed time was 14:00 Thursday (GMT) which then corresponded to 09:00 (East Coast US), and 15:00 (western Europe). The UK and most of Europe have now started summer time, but the US doesn't follow suit until next week. I can set up a call using the "Web-Scheduled Standard" option on http://www.conferenceuk.com/. Should I go for: a) this week (Thursday 30th March) at 09:00 Pittsburgh time (15:00 UK, 16:00 Germany) b) this week (Thursday 30th March) at 08:00 Pittsburgh time (14:00 UK, 15:00 Germany) c) next week (Thursday 6th April) at 09:00 Pittsburgh, (14:00 UK, 15:00 Germany) The default is (c). UR-WG update

I apologize for the lack of followthrough since our meeting in Athens. I know how frustrating it is to build good momentum and then have nothing happen as planned/hoped. Unfortunately, my father passed away the week after I got back from Athens and, needless to say, that put a serious dent in my plans and time. I have requested a session for GGF17 in Tokyo, and it is my sincerest hope that we will have made some meaningful progress on answering the comments well before then. If you are interested in helping move this process forward, the comments are all available on gridforge. Feel free to post responses there, or cut & paste the comment into an email to ur-wg(a)gridforum.org, and post a response to the mailing list. New chair for UR-WG proposed

At the UR-WG meeting at GGF16 last week, we discussed the problem that the current chairs of UR-WG are no longer active in GGF. The consensus of the meeting was that the current chairs need to be replaced. Laura McGinnis was nominated as the new chair of UR-WG, accepted the nomination, and had unanimous support from the meeting. Indeed, Laura has effectively been acting chair for some time. This decision needs to be confirmed on the list, and ratified by the GFSG. If you have any comments on or objections to this course of action, or would like to nominate an alternative or additional chair (self-nominations welcome), now is the time to speak. You may do so on this list, or by private communication to your Area Directors. (UR-WG is in the Management Area, and its Area Directors are Hiro Kishimoto and John Tollefsrud). I would like to take the new chairs proposal to the GFSG, which next meets on Tuesday. So please make any comments by Monday. XML Namespace for Usage Record

It was agreed in Athens that we should follow the guidelines of GFD.58 <URL:http://www.ggf.org/documents/GFD.58.pdf> in the naming of our XML namespace(s). But that doesn't mean that it's fully decided what those names should be. In general, the namespace should be: http://schemas.ggf.org/<project>/<date>/<extra> The <project> part should be either "ur" or "usage" (it's not clear which, since I think that "ur" is a bit short, but is otherwise the right acronym based on the rules listed). The <date> part is just the year/month that we publish the schema (e.g. it would be 2006/02 if we were to publish it now). The <extra> part is almost anything we want it to be. So, what should we use for the <project> part? And what do we want in the <extra> part? Donal.

Notes from UR-WG meeting at GGF16

These notes from the UR-WG meeting at GGF16 are a consolidation of notes taken by Laura McGinnis and myself. Please advise any corrections. Stephen ------- Usage Record Working Group session at GGF16. 1) New Chairs - The current chairs of the UR-WG are no longer active in GGF, nor as far as we know in grid computing. New chairs are therefore needed to complete the activities for which the group is chartered. Stephen Pickles nominated Laura McGinnis, the document editor, to serve as WG chair. No other nominations were made. The attendees expressed unanimous support for Laura as chair. ACTION ITEM: Stephen will post the nomination to the UR-WG mailing list for consensus, then shepherd the nomination through the GFSG for final approval. 2) Likewise, the original authors of the Usage Record specification are no longer involved, and the document needs fresh input so that public comments can be addressed. In particular, at least one person with a solid understanding of XML is needed to take responsibility for validating the XML schema against the document text is needed. Donal Fellows volunteered for this. ACTION ITEM: Donal Fellows will handle this aspect, and serve as an additional co-author on the document through these final steps. 3) Consolidating the comments: Some comments are duplicates, some are the result of unclear text or highlight material that just needs to be emphasized more. ACTION ITEM: Laura McGinnis will consolidate all of the comments received and post to the mailing list. 4) Resolving comments: All of the commentors will be invited to suggest solutions, which may or may not be included in the final document. ACTION ITEM: Laura McGinnis will forward the consolidated comments to the commentors and invite them to propose solutions. ACTION ITEM: All participants who make significant contributions to the resolution of the comments will be included in the authorship list. All other contributors will be acknowledged in the contributors' appendix at the end of the document. 5) Content: The foundations of the document need to be expressed more firmly at the beginning of the document. In particular, the principles that guided the design - esp atomicity, delivery independence, e.g. - need to be emphasized, so that the reader understands the context and focus of the specification. ACTION ITEM: Laura McGinnis will draft appropriate text and include it in the document. 6) Conference Calls: It was agreed that the UR-WG would benefit from a regular series of conference calls, at least until the comment response process was well underway. Since most of the current members of the WG are from Europe, it was agreed that the call should be based there. The common time of 2pm UTC/9amEST (US) was agreed upon, and Thursday was chosen as the most amenable day for the group. ACTION ITEM: Stephen Pickles will set up the conference call and distribute the call-in information to the group via the mailing list. 8) Timelines: We anticipate that the process of responding to the current comments, revising the specification, re-submission to the GGF editor, and 15 day GFSG review will take 4-6 months. Therefore the revised document should be back into public comment by GGF18. ==================== Stephen M. Usage Record Session in Athens, Greece

Since the Usage Records Format Recommendation has entered its public comment period, it's probably a good idea to have a session at the upcoming GGF meeting to talk about how to handle the comments that will be made on the document. Since none of the original authors are still active in GGF, it's even more important to get some new people involved to help wrap this up.
