HPC folks, Please plan to come and participate in the OGSA Information & Data Modeling session on Tues Jan 30, 11am-12:30pm, in the Bellflower room. As you recall, a decision of the BES workgroup was to remove the information model section from the BES specification. Since then, a separate draft has been written to contain that material and utlimately publish it as an OGF Informational document that can be forwarded to DMTF for inclusion in the Common Information Model. The OGSA resource management design team will be reviewing this document at this session - and we'd like your input. plans for the HPC Profile WG session at OGF19, Wed, 2-3:30pm

Folks, Here's what has happened since the Supercomputing HPC Profile Interop Demo, and here's what we plan to discuss at the HPC Profile WG session on Wed at OGF 19. On 11/29, we had a discussion of the various changes to the BES spec and the HPC Basic profile as a result of the interop demo. I believe that discussion was very productive, and continued on 12/6 as well. On 12/15, we had a nice discussion about security - the results of which have been reflected in the most recent version of the doc. Essentially, these discussions were great in that I remember at the time(mid Dec) that we had a lot of work to do, but that the path was reasonably clear for the next month (mid Dec to mid Jan). Essentially, we had some spec-revisions to do and we had to "clean up" the WSDL and XSD. I knew this would take some time, but we had consensus on what needed to be done. I am very happy to announce that we have made the changes. On Wed of this week, Chris Smith uploaded a new version of the BES spec to GridForge. Tomorrow, Chris will upload a new version of the HPC Profile. I think this is excellent progress, and Chris in particular should be commended!! As such, here is the proposed agenda for the OGF19 HPC Profile session (Wed, 2pm-3:30, "Sunflower room"): 2 - 2:45 Overview of the HPC Basic Profile 2:45 - 3:00 Chris Smith will present his ideas on an Extension 3:00 - 3:30 General discussion. If time permits, Marty Humphrey will present his ideas on a security Extension. We will in identify the possible Extensions that have been identified to date, have a group discussion to prioritize these Extensions, and in general discuss the next steps for the WG. Please send me email if there are specific topics that you want to discuss in this session - we have flexibility to re-arrange the schedule as necessary. *** VERY IMPORTANT ****): We made tremendous progress as a group in the prep for the SC 2006 demo, and the lessons we learned have been reflected in the new versions of the specs (BES and HPC Basic Profile). So, the authors of the HPC Basic Profile plan to issue a "Last Call" to the HPC Profile WG at the end of this HPC Profile WG session at OGF19. In other words, the HPC Basic Profile has been through a rigorous test via SC2006, and we're very happy with it , and we're eager to get final comments from the WG at this session (we believe that the current draft reflects all of the WG's comments to date). After a sufficient duration has passed since the issue of "Last Call", we will make changes to improve it based on comments received in this period, and then put the HPC Basic Profile into public comment in OGF. Invitation to an OGF19 session

Dear HP Profile WG, At SC06 there was some discussion on how to further develop the HPC profile and one topic that was mentioned was "data staging". think you might be interested in the attached memo from the OGSA-Data WG, which addresses how to access data from a job submitted to a BES container. (Data staging is one way of doing this and is one of the use cases illustrated). We hypothesise that a profiled use of JSDL with RNS or WS-Naming might be a useful abstraction that enables the use of any of these use cases. If so, might this be useful for the HPC Profile? We will be discussing this memo in our second session at OGF19, at 11.00 on the Thursday. (This is a change of topic from the printed programme). We'd be delighted if members of the HPC WG would like to join this discussion. >From our point of view, this memo illustrates some possible use cases for the services and interfaces described in the OGSA Data Architecture. These use cases will be included in our OGSA Data Scenarios document, which is a companion to the OGSA Data Architecture document. Good Bye

Hi All, Some recent circumstances have forced me to quit my job and become a stay-at-home dad for a year. I will probably monitor things from time to time, but at this point I don't have any plans to continue my involvement in the BES and HPCP working groups. Participating in these working groups has been a lot of fun as well as a useful experience. I learned a lot. It was nice meeting those of you who I did meet at OGF, and I regret missing many of the other HPCP demo participants at SC. Good luck to everyone and the future of open standards. Peter P.S. Folks, Thanks again for all of your hard work for the Supercomputing demo last month. I believe that we now have a new HPC Basic Profile that reflects our collective experiences, at least in regard to security. More precisely, I have uploaded a new draft of the "HPC Basic Profile" to forge.ogf.org. The *only* modification is the inclusion of a "Security Considerations" section based on our collective experiences of the SC2006 interopfest. The "Common Cases" are NOT specifically addressed. For those of you who cannot immediately read this, the essence of the HPC Basic Profile "Security Considerations" in this draft is as follows: R0501: An INSTANCE MUST support TLS 1.0, SHOULD support SSL 3.0, and SHOULD support TLS 1.1. R0502: An INSTANCE MUST support the FIPS-140 compliant ciphersuites. R0503: An INSTANCE MUST support TLS_RSA_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA. R0504: An INSTANCE MUST support service authentication using X.509 certificates using RSA cryptographic keys and the SHA-1 digest algorithm. R0505: An INSTANCE MUST support either client authentication using username/password credentials or X.509 certificates using RSA cryptographic keys and the SHA-1 digest algorithm. R0506: An INSTANCE must use TLS/SSL encryption key agreement based on the RSA algorithm. Diffie-Helman key agreement shall not be used. R0507: Client authentication based on username/password must use a password digest and conform to the Web Services SecurityUsername Token Profile 1.1. We encourage comments/questions on these 7 requirements/mandates, both on this email list and on the call this Friday (11am Eastern). However, *BEFORE* raising a question or concern on this list above, *PLEASE* read the document first, as the document has a fairly detailed (for a technical recommendation) explanation/justification. Your questions might possibly be answered in this doc. I also note that this is a *DRAFT*, so there's plenty of time/room for discussion on this! See you on the call on Friday.
