OGF is participating in the joint conference of CloudWorld, Next Generation Data Center (NGDC), and OpenSource World going on now, August 12-13, 2009 in San Francisco, CA, USA. OGF's VP of Standards, Chris Smith, is presenting a talk Thursday August 13, from 9:15am - 10:00am in room 3004: From Grid to Cloud: Leveraging Distributed Computing Technologies in Moving to the Cloud There are many challenges in the minds of enterprise CIO's about the opportunities that cloud presents. On the one hand, the opportunity to flex resources to meet demand, particularly with pay as you go, addresses the challenge of sizing and capital expenditure for occasional events. Another class of challenge is the security and management of key corporate resources, for audit and compliance purposes. So why would the typical CIO be interested in throwing caution to the wind with a third party service provider? This session will feature discussion of the potential for grid middleware to provide a vehicle for the development of private clouds, leveraging existing resources and infrastructure with the potential for extending services into the cloud using commercial suppliers. Much work has been done in the grid middleware community to demonstrate the viability of grid as an application, an extensible platform and an infrastructure in the cloud, thus providing an effective "on ramp" to the cloud for the existing user base. Nominations sought for OGF Enterprise VP

All - On behalf of OGF President Craig Lee: Robert Fogel's term as VP of Enterprise has come to a close and we are making an open call for nominations for this position. The VP of Enterprise is responsible for promoting all effective distributed computing technologies in the enterprise and other industrial domains. This person will work with the Area Directors and other leaders in OGF's Enterprise Function to engage various industry verticals, organize workshops at both OGF events and other venues, comprehend industry requirements, and promote the adoption of OGF standards. Duration of term, typically three years, is negotiable. This call will close 10 October, 2008. Please be aware, however, that lodging options are filling up quickly due to an event happening after OGF24 (a Formula One race), so book your hotel as soon as possible. The 24th Open Grid Forum - OGF24 Singapore September 15-19, 2008 After successful events in the US and Europe, OGF returns to Asia-Pacific for OGF24 in beautiful Singapore. Co-located with the GridAsia 2008 event, and hosted by Singapore Grid Forum, OGF24 will offer a unique opportunity for distributed computing experts, builders, and users to meet with OGF's global community to discuss emerging trends and success stories of grid deployments, and collaborate on standards. In addition to high-profile keynote speakers, participants can expect a wide variety of program content ranging from hot technologies like cloud and virtualization to practical uses of grids in scientific and industrial settings. A commercial exhibition will also be an important part of this multi-faceted event.
