Weekly call - time zone change affects meeting time

Folks, The UK has just gone off "summer" or "daylight savings time", other places have not. So this week, our meeting is at 5pm/17h00 UK (UTC, GMT) 1pm US.EDT 1pm Toronto 10am US. Pacific time. Next week the USA and Canada will also have shifted off "daylight time" to regular time and things will be back to normal, i.e., 5pm/17h in the UK, noon US.ET and Toronto, and 9am west coast. Any other participants I've not considered from other time-zones please be forwarned. Thanks ...mikeb

To be circulated asap by Steve for feedback particularly from Simon. - facets doc and null/optional/default doc Highlights: - approach re: strict min/max occurs interpretation and optional vs. required generally seems to have consensus. - ok with restrictions that unordered sequences and 'suppress' separators ordered sequences must have initiators specified. - nested variable length arrays inside sequences using the same delimiter must be allowed so long as the syntax is unambiguous. - we decided to reconsider whether groups (sequence or choice) should be allowed to carry max/min occurs. This introduces some infoset issues (how do you discuss the 2nd child of the 2nd anonymous sequence of an element - XML Infoset and even XML PSVI say you can't. We need to be able to.). There are substantial benefits to allowing this min/max occurs in that it lets us express the semantics of many properties with compact examples of equivalent DFDL. We expect these advantages to carry over also into user format specifications. - additional comments on these docs are sought asap so as to have them before reintegrating this into the main spec. DFDL-WG session at OGF21

Mike Already had the session which was a bit of a disappointment as only 4 attendees. No new volunteers to join the group Here are the notes from the session Hi Alan, attached are the meeting notes - please let me know if you have any questions. As for feedback from the scientific data format front: as said, I'd propose to actively approach some of the groups working on scientific data formats. Attached is revised "facets" document based on discussion in the meeting. Meeting friday on defaults/nulls/optionals. Also discussed: OGF upcoming meeting - alan going - goals for this are - udpate on our progress and recruiting. Also discussed: XPath 2.0 - spec is so huge it makes an excess burden for DFDL implementations if we say our expression language is all of Xpath 2.0. Can we subset it? E.g., XPath 2.0 language constructs, but with the smaller XPath 1.0 function library? This is not enough as we want to avoid even some language things e.g., we don't need the iteration constructs. What else? Agreed that the most critical thing is that our path language is consistent with XPath 2.0 semantics. Alan writing up a proposal. Hi everyone, The agenda for the call on 10/3 is to review as much as we can the two proposals circulated last week. 1) proposal on facets, min/maxOccurs, default, fixed (the end of this proposal poses a question w.r.t. the 'fixed' attribute that I'd like people to weigh-in on) 2) null, default, optional simplification proposal - depends on (1). As I sent the two proposal docs last week, I won't bother re-attaching them here (imagine the carbon footprint of big email attachments!). If you are unable to find them in your email stream, I can send them to you individually again. Based on how far we get (I'm sure we won't finish) I'd like to schedule another hour or possibly 90 minute WG call for thursday or friday this week. Suggestions for times: Thursday 9am EDT, 10am EDT, 11am EDT Friday: 10am EDT, 11am EDT, noon. If you would like to participate, please reply to me separately about which of these times works best for you. I have been lurking on this list for some time but I realise that there is a related piece of work, namely DRB - see http://www.gael.fr/drb/site/ - which I should bring to your attention. It has been developed by the company Gael and is used by the European Space Agency (ESA), but I believe it will shortly be, or may already be, open source. ...David
