OGF 33 / EGI TF / Grid 2011 and other upcoming events - meet with your OGF colleagues!

Dear OGF working group colleagues, We are in the midst of an exciting week, packed full of activities, working groups meetings, EGI and Grid 2011 event sessions and other associated opportunities. It is truly a kaleidoscope of activity, full of excitement and activity for those involved. *Please try to meet with your working groups* during this week, no matter how much activity there may be as a distraction to this activity. We need to keep making progress on documents, OGF work products and discussion, so even if (especially if) you are involved with other competing or associated sessions, please try to find and discuss OGF topics with those of yoru colleagues who are here, both within and outside of the scheduled OGF sessions. For those who are not here in Lyon, we look forward to seeing you at OGF 34 in Oxford, March 12-14, 2012, OGF 35 in Delft, June 2012 and/or OGF 36 in Chicago, October 2012. There will also be many OGF-associated opportunities for interaction in association with other conferences and events of interest in our field - for example, at Supercomputing 2011, Nov. 12-18 in Seattle, at the IEEE CloudCom 2011, Nov. 28 - Dec. 1 in Athens, the ISGC 2012 and Open Science Grid All-Hands meetings in March in Taipei and Lincoln, nebraska respectively, and at the XSEDE Workshop the week of July 16-20 in Chicago. The schedule for the remaining sessions for this week is below. as VP of Standards, it is my hope that you will take advantage of each and everyone of the opportunities both here and at each of the other events listed above to interact with your OGF colleagues and to make your contributions to the field through formulation and development of OGF standards, documents, workshops and projects. If there is anything that I or the other folks involved with the organization of OGF can do to make your work more productive and your interactions more possible with other members of the distributed computing community at large, please let us know. We look forward to interacting with you at the opportunities listed above, and in the working group e-mail and other discussion lists. Dear OGF WG members, Thank you all very much for an excellent set of standards sessions and great productivity in terms of progress and output at OGF 32 in Salt Lake City. Speaking just for the Standards area, I was greatly encouraged by the progress made, and as an organization Open Grid Forum seems well-poised to continue on its long streak of productive output for the community. A copy of the wrap-up talk, missing only a few sessions which we will try to add later, is now posted in the OGF 32 materials at http://www.ogf.org/OGF32/materials/2336/OGF32+Closing+Plenary.pdf We'll update the left-hand sidebar links on the main OGF site to point to this and other related items of interest shortly. Also, the "Workshop on Science Agency Uses of Clouds and Grids" held immediately after OGF 32 finished went very well. We're very pleased to have received a strong response from the community to this workshop in terms of submitted talks, and ended up with a densely packed schedule for the event. Copies of these talks are available on the workshop site at the link below now for your perusal. Clearly this area is a strong theme for OGF, and future workshops will be planned with a format that will include far more time for general discussion. OGF Community - OGF32 has just concluded in Salt Lake City, and now it's time to turn our attention to OGF33, quickly approaching on 19-23 September 2011 in Lyon, France. OGF is excited to be co-locating with the EGI Technical Forum as well as the IEEE Grid 2011 conference. Please make your requests for OGF33 sessions soon. Dear OGF WG member, The agenda for the 2011 Workshop on Science Agency Uses of Clouds and Grids has now been posted on the conference page, http://www.ogf.org/SAUCG/ along with instructions for remote participation by any of several options. Please feel free to forward this message to other interested parties as appropriate. Remote participation is welcome in this workshop; see below. Please also check these pages at the time of the workshop, as corrections and updates may continue to be made We have an exciting and packed day planned for all day Monday, so please plan to connect for an extended time and to participate as fully as possible in the workshop. We have asked all speakers, even in light of the limited time for each talk, to leave time for questions within their allotted interval. Recall that the purpose of this set or workshops and activities is to give better visibility to a lot of the good work going on in the field, and to provide us with some of the steps needed to document and inventory such work in a more systematic way. For this purpose, it is sufficient to have good information regarding the overall purpose of your project, tool or infrastructure effort and to provide sufficient links to allow viewers and readers of your talk to find out more. Whether participating remotely or in person, the same consideration applies to comments and questions that you might be inclined to ask during the workshop. Please do be prepared to ask questions designed and intended to find out more information about the projects, rather than engage in statements of opinion or polemical arguments. Remote participants are asked to please mute their audio if using a phone or audio/video two-way connection at all times when they are not speaking. That having been said, we do welcome remote participation and a lively, focused discussion on each topic being presented. The overall focus of this workshop will be on using these projects and talks to provide a representative current sampling of the best work and concepts in this field. We hope the above material will be of use to you as we gather information and tackle the challenge of identifying, documenting and supporting information about the best projects and tools together. NIST Cloud Computing Standards Roadmap, First Edition available for download

The first formal output of the NIST Cloud Standards Roadmap group is now available at the link below. Thanks to all from within OGF who helped to offer comments to this working group for this document. Please look this over and make note of any comments that may be gathered for a further future edition. There are other working groups with activities still in progress for the other aspects of the NIST process, and other organizational roadmaps in progress throughout the world. I hope that all OGF working groups will look to match their activities to OGF internal goals and also to map and explain them in the context of such external efforts. We have several such external liaison efforts in progress, coordinated by our VP of Community and the OGF Board, but also rely on OGF members to call worthwhile efforts that can help the OGF mission to our attention. Please feel free to contact any of the above individuals for more information and to pass on worthwhile work of note that is relevant to our community. Internet2 and Open Grid Forum announce Workshop on Science Agency Used of Clouds and Grids

Workshop On Science Agency Uses Of Clouds And Grids Announced Muncie, Indiana; July 1, 2011 - The Open Grid Forum and Internet2 today announced a new workshop titled, "Science Agency Uses of Clouds and Grids" to be held in Salt Lake City, UT on July 18, 2011. The workshop is a follow-on to the previous USDOE-sponsored workshop on High Performance Applications of Cloud and Grid Tools held in April, 2011. This workshop will serve as a venue to develop formal input to several ongoing standards and software roadmapping efforts, including the European SIENA Cloud Standards Roadmap project and the US National Institute of Science and Technology's Cloud Computing Business Use Cases group, as well as to OGF's own standards efforts. International contributions to this workshop are encouraged and will be accepted. Project status updates on cloud and grid framework software efforts and major projects are recruited to be presented at this workshop. The primary goal of this effort will be to produce a process that will effectively inventory and document essentially all large-scale use of cloud and grid infrastructures for projects that support science agency user communities. The schedule will consist of an introduction to the goals of the above roadmapping efforts presented by representatives from these projects and from the workshop sponsors. Materials relating to the inventory aspects of this effort are in preparation and will be distributed before the meeting. Workshop time will be taken in the morning session to present materials gathered to that point and to recruit and gather further information from workshop participants, and to go over the gathered material for completeness. The afternoon session will be devoted to presentations from projects that have not already presented at the previous HPACG workshop. Special presentations from the Open Science Grid on how to create a new Virtual Organization and a preview of the upcoming evolution of the Teragrid project into the eXtreme Digital era by representatives in attendance are anticipated. A special presentation on the Globus Online service and other projects of the Globus group will also be made. Time for other special presentations may also be available; please contact the organizers. Dear OGF WG participants As indicated on http://www.ogf.org/OGF32/lodging.php and the equivalent Teragrid 2011 page, https://www.teragrid.org/web/tg11/hotel/travel-information , the conference rate of $135/night is only available through today, June 27. We are told that the rooms are now completely booked on July 17. If you select a date range that includes this date, the Marriott reservation system at http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/slcut-salt-lake-city-marriott-downtown will likely refuse the booking with following message : "Group Rate Not Available For Requested Dates Please click the “Return to Previous Screen” button, alter the stay information and retry your search." It may be necessary to book your room separately at the full rate on those dates. Calling the reservation help number with this information may also be an option. We are excited about the opportunity to co-locate with the Teragrid '11 conference in the same hotel venue immediately following OGF32. Come to Salt Lake City for OGF32 and stay for Teragrid '11! This should be posted soon, but here's a jump start. I just heard from Joel that the hotel room booking code and rates for OGF 32 in Salt Lake City will be the same as those for Teragrid 2011 - good news! The code is "TEGTEGA" and the rate is $129/night (plus taxes, I expect). This will make it convenient for those who plan to book to attend both events, though the code should be good for either. Open Grid Forum 32 Call for Session Proposals

Dear OGF work groups and interested parties, The Open Grid Forum 32 call for session proposals is now available at the following link. As a reminder, the dates of OGF 32 are July 15-18, 2011, with the last day of OGF 32 overlapping the first day of the Teragrid 2011 meeting. Please submit a session request for any group, BOF or session you would like to see and/or are planning to lead. We have recently worked out some problems with logistics and are now able to report that we *WILL* be co-located in the same hotel as the Teragrid 2011 conference, the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/slcut-salt-lake-city-marriott-downtown More information will be forthcoming on the hotel booking code soon. Meanwhile, we encourage you to explore the links for OGF 32 and to fill out the call for proposals if you are a group or session leader or area director, or would like to propose a BOF, workshop or tutorial.
