Dear OGF working group and community group participants and friends, Following on from the successful and well-attended BOF at Supercomputing 2022 on “Addressing HPC’s Carbon Footprint” (https://sc22.supercomputing.org/presentation/?id=bof196&sess=sess314) there will be an open public workshop at UCC/BDCAT 2022 (https://ucc-conference.org and https://bdcat-conference.org) on "Reducing HPC's Carbon Footprint" December 7, 2022 from 5:00-6:30 pm Pacific time. This workshop is part of an effort to create an open public document to capture information on practical steps being taken successfully by a number of HPC centers to reduce their own carbon footprints, and to share information on how to do more on this topic in the future. If you can’t attend the event in person or remotely at the working session time, please register online anyway to receive further information on how to participate in ongoing activities related to this topic. This information will eventually be turned into an Open Grid Forum Community Practice Document as described at https://docs.ogf.org<https://docs.ogf.org/> for long-term access and comment. Announcement: New Mastodon instance available at https://mast.hpc.social

Dear OGF working group and community group friends and colleagues, Recent turmoil in the social media landscape has led several of us to look for ways to share information with each other in ways that could be a better fit to the academic research computing and data community. I am writing to let you know about a new resource recently made available to the community with support from the Open Grid Forum and the NSF center that I run. With input from the community as documented in the results of the survey conducted from early through mid-November of this year available for review at https://survey.hpc.social, we have launched a new community-based open project called “hpc.social" that includes a Mastodon instance available to the community and will support a web site at https://hpc.social to accomplish similar goals. The new Mastodon instance is available at at https://mast.hpc.social and is currently open for signups. It's our intention, speaking for a loose collection of people active in HPC and related fields who are helping, to have this and the web site associated with it at https://hpc.social become a the nucleus of a resource to promote informal, community-driven exchange of information in the HPC and related community backed up by resources such as a GitHub area for joint projects, social media for sharing of information, and optionally mailing lists if needed. Rather than duplicate the functions of existing organizations, it's the intention of this effort to draw the attention of the community to such efforts on a global basis and to assist with contact and exchange of information pointing people wherever possible to existing organizations for further involvement. We'll probably start with a listing of such organizations indexed to provide usefulness and to include contact information, web site links, social media links, etc. and build out from there. The project is intended to support the ability to deploy code and active sites containing material of interest that is suited for self-maintenance by the community. The project is currently being supported by the NSF Cloud and Autonomic Computing Center (https://nsfcac.org) in partnership with the Open Grid Forum (https://www.ogf.org) We are seeking additional HPC-oriented organizations to help with its ongoing funding. For now, current or past participants in OGF and anyone in HPC-related fields are invited to sign up to the Mastodon server at https://mast.hpc.social while we start to work on filling out the above information based on our GitHub organizational pages at https://github.com/hpc-social and take steps to gather ideas for further ways to serve the community with this project. Redmine static archive complete; move to new OpenGridforum organizational pages on GitHub

Dear OGF community members, The static archive of the previous OGF Redmine site is now completed and online at the same location as before (https://redmine.ogf.org) with all documents, working group meeting minutes, and even a built-in internal archive of the previous GridForge content in summary form as before under the IT project. A separate GridForge archive with more of the older site is also being built and will be deployed at some point in the near future to give even fuller provenance and a record of development for OGF documents and standards. As we complete this, we are officially moving all new development for OGF activities to the https://github.com/opengridforum organizational pages on GitHub. Some groups are still active, and with the ability provided above for previous groups to fetch their older content from the Redmine site archive, the stage is set for any groups that want to continue their previous activities, to start new ones, or to suggest other modifications or variations on OGF’s engagement and involvement with the advanced distributed computing, cloud, grid, and network development community. The description given on the https://www.ogf.org web site is still relevant: OGF is an open global community committed to driving the rapid evolution and adoption of modern advanced applied distributed computing, including cloud, grid and associated storage, networking and workflow methods. OGF is focused on developing and promoting innovative scalable techniques, applications and infrastructures to improve productivity in the enterprise and within the international research, science and business communities. OGF accomplishes its work through open forums, interactions and events that build the community, explore trends, share optimal approaches, document findings and consolidate these results where appropriate into standards. The output products that result from this process document and codify best practices and standards that provide the basis for some of the largest and most powerful operational computing infrastructure systems in the world. Several new efforts are underway to modernize and make relevant the various activities of the community and to create new ways for those interested in these topics to communicate. Please stand by for some new announcements that will set the context and provide information for these efforts. Meanwhile please feel free to make use of the resources above and provide feedback (ideally as pull requests for the relevant components on GitHub) for things you find on which you can suggest refinements or improvements. Survey on creation of an HPC-oriented social platform

Dear OGF community, There's been lots of discussion of starting an HPC/AI & related fields social media platform that's separate from the commercial, politicized ones and focused on community issues and topics. This is partly driven by concerns on existing platforms and partly by the desire for a friendly, low-overhead, easy to adopt method to exchange information that will encourage participation and lower barriers to building helpful relationships. A survey is ready at https://survey.hpc.social to evaluate support and needs for an HPC.social server. (You may need to wait for your DNS servers to update as this is brand new, just launched.) Please fill this out and broadcast it to colleagues and HPC-interested friends so we can get good community input! The ISGC is one of the most important annual international events in Asia that brings together scientists and engineers worldwide to exchange ideas, to present on challenges, solutions and future development issues in the field of Open Data and Open Science. The main theme of ISGC 2023 will focus on “accelerating time-to-science through computing”. Over the past two decades, the infrastructure of distributed computing and the concept of open data has revolutionized the scientific research. Compute-intensive research has once been a barrier for many researchers. Nowadays, the cloud and distributed computing infrastructure could provide researchers immediate access to an unlimited amount of computing power, and they can ask questions that may not have been possible. Moreover, the virtual infrastructure allows scientists to share large-scale data. Reducing time to science is something every researcher wish to experience. Promoting the open data/open science collaboration between Asia Pacific region and the world, the Symposium offers an excellent opportunity to learn from the latest achievement from Europe, America and Asia. The goal of ISGC is to create a face-to-face venue where individual communities and national representatives can present and share their contributions to the solutions of global challenges. We cordially invite and welcome your participation! Topics of Interest: 1. Applications and results from the Virtual Research Communities and Industry (1) Physics and Engineering Applications Submissions should report on experience with physics and engineering applications including high energy physics that exploit grid and cloud computing services, applications that are planned or under development, or application tools and methodologies. Topics of interest include: (1)Data analysis and application including ML/DL based one; (2) Management of distributed data; (3) Performance analysis and system tuning; (4) Workload scheduling; (5) Management of an experimental collaboration as a virtual organization, in particular learning from the Covid19 pandemic; (6) Expectations for the evolution of computing models drawn from recent experience handling extremely large and geographically diverse datasets, and (7) Expectations for the evolution of computing operation etc. towards the carbon neutral. The recent pandemic caused by Sars-CoV2 has clearly demonstrated the critical role of e-Infrastructures such high performance, high throughput and clouds infrastructure, but also of big-data and machine learning solutions to support the worldwide efforts to fight this pandemic. This track aims at discussing problems, solutions and application examples in the fields of health and life sciences, with a particular focus on non-technical end users. We invite in particular submissions concentrating on applications of pandemic response and preparedness in the areas of e.g. Drug discovery, Vaccine design, Structural biology, Bioinformatics, Medical imaging, Epidemiological studies and other Public health applications. Submissions should ideally highlight how different e-Science / e-Infrastructure solutions are being applied to fight / prepare for pandemics. (3) Earth & Environmental Sciences & Biodiversity Applications Environmental sciences are placing an increasing emphasis on the understanding of the Earth as a single, highly complex, coupled system with living and dead organisms. For example, feedback involving oceanic and atmospheric processes can have major consequences for the long-term development of the climate system, which in turn affects biodiversity, natural hazards and can control the development of the cryosphere and lithosphere. In this setting, natural disaster mitigation is one of the most critical regional issues in Asia. Despite the diversity of environmental sciences, many projects share the same significant challenges, where scientific computing and information technology play a central role in understanding data and studying complex systems. Technical challenges start with the collection of data from multiple distributed sensors (potentially in very remote locations) and the management of large data sets. Proper data management requires metadata fully specifying how, when and where the data were produced. Finally, results need to be presented to scientific users and stakeholders in a concise and intuitive form, requiring appropriate post-processing. This session addresses how these challenges are being handled, in particular with the aids of e-Science paradigms. (4) Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities (SSAH) Applications Disciplines across the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (SSAH) have critically engaged with technological innovations such as grid- and cloud computing, and, most recently, various data analytic technologies. The increasing availability of data, ranging from social media text data to consumer big data has led to an increasing interest in analysis methods such as natural language processing, social network analysis, machine learning and text mining. These developments pose challenges as well as opening up opportunities and members of the SSAH community have been at the forefront of discussions about the impact that novel forms of data, novel computational infrastructures and novel analytical methods have for the pursuit of science endeavors and our understanding of what science is and can be. The ISGC 2023 SSAH track invites papers and presentations covering applications demonstrating the opportunities of new technologies or critically engaging with their methodological implications in the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. Innovative application of analytical tools for survey data, social media data, and government (open) data are welcome. We also invite contributions that critically reflect on the following subjects: (1) the impact that ubiquitous and mobile access to information and communication technologies have for society more generally, especially around topics such as smart cities, civic engagement, and digital journalism; (2) philosophical and methodological reflections on the development of the techniques and the approaches by which data scientists use to pursue knowledge. 2. Technologies that provide access and exploitation of different site resources and infrastructures (5) Virtual Research Environment (including tools, services, workflows, portals, … etc.) Virtual Research Environments (VRE) provide an intuitive, easy-to-use and secure access to (federated) computing resources for solving scientific problems, trying to hide the complexity of the underlying infrastructure, the heterogeneity of the resources, and the interconnecting middleware. Behind the scenes, VREs comprise tools, middleware and portal technologies, workflow automation as well a security solutions for layered and multifaceted applications. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: (1) Real-world experiences building and/or using VREs to gain new scientific knowledge; (2) Middleware technologies, tools, services beyond the state-of-the-art for VREs; (3) Science gateways as specific VRE environments, (4) Innovative technologies to enable VREs on arbitrary devices, including Internet-of-Things; and (5) One-step-ahead workflow integration and automation in VREs. (6) Data Management & Big Data The rapid growth of the data available to scientists and scholars – in terms of Velocity and Variety as well as sheer Volume – is transforming research across disciplines. Increasingly these data sets are generated not just through experiments, but as a byproduct of our day-to-day digital lives. This track explores the consequences of this growth, and encourages submissions relating to two aspects in particular - firstly, the conceptual models and analytical techniques required to process data at scale; secondly, approaches and tools for managing and creating these digital assets throughout their lifecycle. 3. Infrastructure for Research (7) Network, Security, Infrastructure & Operations Networking and the connected e-Infrastructures are becoming ubiquitous. Ensuring the smooth operation and integrity of the services for research communities in a rapidly changing environment are key challenges. This track focuses on the current state of the art and recent advances in these areas: networking, infrastructure, operations, and security. The scope of this track includes advances in high-performance networking (software defined networks, community private networks, the IPv4 to IPv6 transition, cross-domain provisioning), the connected data and compute infrastructures (storage and compute systems architectures, improving service and site reliability, interoperability between infrastructures, data centre models), monitoring tools and metrics, service management (ITIL and SLAs), and infrastructure/systems operations and management. Also included here are issues related to the integrity, reliability, and security of services and data: developments in security middleware, operational security, security policy, federated identity management, community management, and lessons learned from operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Submissions should address solutions in at least one of these areas. (8) Infrastructure Clouds and Virtualizations This track will focus on the development of cloud infrastructures and on the use of cloud computing and virtualization technologies in large-scale (distributed) computing environments in science and technology. We solicit papers describing underlying virtualization and "cloud" technology including integration of accelerators and support for specific needs of AI/ML and DNN, scientific applications and case studies related to using such technology in large scale infrastructure as well as solutions overcoming challenges and leveraging opportunities in this setting. Of particular interest are results exploring the usability of virtualization and infrastructure clouds from the perspective of machine learning and other scientific applications, the performance, reliability and fault-tolerance of solutions used, and data management issues. Papers dealing with the cost, price, and cloud markets, with security and privacy, as well as portability and standards, are also most welcome. (9) Converging High Performance Computing Infrastructures: Supercomputers, clouds, accelerators The classical simulation-oriented computing is nowadays complemented by the machined deep learning approaches. This requires novel approaches to build and integrate high performance computing infrastructures, combining supercomputers, clouds, and specialized accelerator and artificial intelligence hardware. The integration of these different systems, often provided by different owners and different location, requires new ideas for distribution and federation. This track solicits recent research and development achievements and best practices in building and exploiting these converging high performance infrastructures or their components. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to the followings: (1) Building and use of modern high performance computing systems, including special support for AI and DNN in particular; (2) Experiences, use cases and best practices on the development and operation of large-scale heterogeneous applications; (3) Integration and interoperability to support coordinated federated use of different e-infrastructures (supercomputers, accelerated clouds, …) and their building blocks; (4) Use of virtualization techniques and containers to support access to and portability across different heterogeneous systems; (5) Performance of different applications on these integrated high performance infrastructures. (10) Artificial Intelligence (AI) During the last decade, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and statistical learning techniques have started to become pervasive in scientific applications, exploring the adoption of novel algorithms, modifying the design principles of application workflows, and impacting the way in which grid and cloud computing services are used by a diverse set of scientific communities. This track aims at discussing problems, solutions and application examples related to this area of research, ranging from R&D activities to production-ready solutions. Topics of interests in this track include: AI-enabled scientific workflows; novel approaches in scientific applications adopting machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques; cloud-integrated statistical learning as-a-service solutions; anomaly detection techniques; predictive and prescriptive maintenance; experience with MLOps practices; AI-enabled adaptive simulations; experience on ML/DL models training and inference on different hardware resources for scientific applications. These include the collection of data from multiple distributed sensors (potentially in very remote locations), the management of large low-level data sets, the requirement for metadata fully specifying how, when and where the data were collected, and the post-processing of those low-level data into higher-level data products which need to be presented to scientific users in a concise and intuitive form. This session would in particular address how these challenges are being handled with the aids of e-Science paradigm. (4) Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Applications Disciplines across the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) have critically engaged with technological innovations such as grid- and cloud computing, and, most recently, various data analytic technologies. The increasing availability of data, ranging from social media text data to consumer big data has led to an increasing interest in analysis methods such as natural language processing, social network analysis, machine learning and text mining. These developments pose challenges as well as opening up opportunities and members of the HASS community have been at the forefront of discussions about the impact that novel forms of data, novel computational infrastructures and novel analytical methods have for the pursuit of science endeavours and our understanding of what science is and can be. The ISGC 2022 HASS track invites papers and presentations covering applications demonstrating the opportunities of new technologies or critically engaging with their methodological implications in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Innovative application of analytical tools for survey data, social media data, and government (open) data are welcomed. (8) Infrastructure Clouds and Virtualizations This track will focus on the development of cloud infrastructures and on the use of cloud computing and virtualization technologies in large-scale (distributed) computing environments in science and technology. The integration of these different systems, often provided by different owners and different location, requires new ideas for distribution and federation. This track solicits recent research and development achievements and best practices in building and exploiting these converging high performance infrastructures or their components. The energy world is changing very quickly and computation can help. Please accept my apologies for the form letter style of this note. Many people are unaware of the scale of the transformation that the electrical grid is undergoing – the sheer amount of new renewable generation coming online, and the problems that must be addressed to absorb that much renewable power. As a controllable, potentially variable load, computation can play an important role in stabilizing the grid in the presence of large amounts of variable renewable generation. I believe this is particularly important for computational scientists (and those who deliver the computational resources to them) to understand as every MWh of electricity consumed in the US leads, on average, the emission of 0.7 metric tons of CO2. Thus, a one MW data center on average leads to the emission of six thousand metric tons of CO2 per year. That's the bad news. The good news is that renewable, carbon-neutral generation is now the least expensive means to produce electricity in the world, period. This has led to the development of tens of gigawatts of wind and solar in the US and the world in the last decade. In the Great Plains of the US alone, there is now so much excess power that wind and solar resources are often curtailed, leaving terawatt-hours of power unused. In short, generating sufficient power with renewables is no longer the problem. Instead, the problem is leveraging this power. There are two significant challenges. First, the sun does not always shine, and the wind does not always blow, meaning that the current design of the electrical grid will have to change to accommodate fluctuating generation. Second, the best wind and solar sources are not proximate to sources of load, namely, population centers and heavy industry. One way to address this second problem is to identify energy-intensive, economically viable industries that can be feasibly moved to the Great Plains and that can accommodate the large amounts of variable generation provided by renewable energy. Computation fits these requirements: computation turns electricity into value and requires only power and networking to operate. Computation can be paused, restarted, and migrated up and down the Great Plains in response to differences in power availability. In essence, data centers can act like giant batteries and grid stabilizers, soaking up power and delivering value when renewable sources are pumping out lots of power, and reducing consumption and stabilizing the grid when renewable sources are limited. In this talk, I present how different forms of computation can be used to soak up excess very inexpensive renewable power, stabilize the grid when generators (including wind and solar) fluctuate or drop offline, and act like giant batteries by reducing their load and returning their load to the grid. I begin with a bit of background on the explosion of renewable energy, the challenges renewables present to the electrical grid, and electricity markets. I then discuss computation as controllable load, beginning with BitCoin, and then moving to High Throughput Computing in support of the sciences, engineering, and AI.
