Invitation to Workshop on "Reducing HPC's Carbon Footprint" December 7, 2022 and related activities

Dear OGF working group and community group participants and friends, Following on from the successful and well-attended BOF at Supercomputing 2022 on “Addressing HPC’s Carbon Footprint” (https://sc22.supercomputing.org/presentation/?id=bof196&sess=sess314) there will be an open public workshop at UCC/BDCAT 2022 (https://ucc-conference.org and https://bdcat-conference.org) on "Reducing HPC's Carbon Footprint" December 7, 2022 from 5:00-6:30 pm Pacific time. This workshop is part of an effort to create an open public document to capture information on practical steps being taken successfully by a number of HPC centers to reduce their own carbon footprints, and to share information on how to do more on this topic in the future. If you can’t attend the event in person or remotely at the working session time, please register online anyway to receive further information on how to participate in ongoing activities related to this topic. This information will eventually be turned into an Open Grid Forum Community Practice Document as described at https://docs.ogf.org<https://docs.ogf.org/> for long-term access and comment. Volunteers to help produce this document and/or contribute to its content beyond the workshop itself would also be appreciated. Announcement: New Mastodon instance available at https://mast.hpc.social

Dear OGF working group and community group friends and colleagues, Recent turmoil in the social media landscape has led several of us to look for ways to share information with each other in ways that could be a better fit to the academic research computing and data community. I am writing to let you know about a new resource recently made available to the community with support from the Open Grid Forum and the NSF center that I run. With input from the community as documented in the results of the survey conducted from early through mid-November of this year available for review at https://survey.hpc.social, we have launched a new community-based open project called “hpc.social" that includes a Mastodon instance available to the community and will support a web site at https://hpc.social to accomplish similar goals. The new Mastodon instance is available at at https://mast.hpc.social and is currently open for signups. It's our intention, speaking for a loose collection of people active in HPC and related fields who are helping, to have this and the web site associated with it at https://hpc.social become a the nucleus of a resource to promote informal, community-driven exchange of information in the HPC and related community backed up by resources such as a GitHub area for joint projects, social media for sharing of information, and optionally mailing lists if needed. Rather than duplicate the functions of existing organizations, it's the intention of this effort to draw the attention of the community to such efforts on a global basis and to assist with contact and exchange of information pointing people wherever possible to existing organizations for further involvement. We'll probably start with a listing of such organizations indexed to provide usefulness and to include contact information, web site links, social media links, etc. and build out from there. The project is intended to support the ability to deploy code and active sites containing material of interest that is suited for self-maintenance by the community. The project is currently being supported by the NSF Cloud and Autonomic Computing Center (https://nsfcac.org) in partnership with the Open Grid Forum (https://www.ogf.org) We are seeking additional HPC-oriented organizations to help with its ongoing funding. For now, current or past participants in OGF and anyone in HPC-related fields are invited to sign up to the Mastodon server at https://mast.hpc.social while we start to work on filling out the above information based on our GitHub organizational pages at https://github.com/hpc-social and take steps to gather ideas for further ways to serve the community with this project. I’d like to stress that several people have already volunteered to be moderators on the Mastodon instance to help it comply with its stated terms of service and that participation is welcome by opening issues, making suggestions or pull requests, or volunteering to help with the web site and its developing features. Redmine static archive complete; move to new OpenGridforum organizational pages on GitHub

Dear OGF community members, The static archive of the previous OGF Redmine site is now completed and online at the same location as before (https://redmine.ogf.org) with all documents, working group meeting minutes, and even a built-in internal archive of the previous GridForge content in summary form as before under the IT project. A separate GridForge archive with more of the older site is also being built and will be deployed at some point in the near future to give even fuller provenance and a record of development for OGF documents and standards. As we complete this, we are officially moving all new development for OGF activities to the https://github.com/opengridforum organizational pages on GitHub. Some groups are still active, and with the ability provided above for previous groups to fetch their older content from the Redmine site archive, the stage is set for any groups that want to continue their previous activities, to start new ones, or to suggest other modifications or variations on OGF’s engagement and involvement with the advanced distributed computing, cloud, grid, and network development community. The description given on the https://www.ogf.org web site is still relevant: OGF is an open global community committed to driving the rapid evolution and adoption of modern advanced applied distributed computing, including cloud, grid and associated storage, networking and workflow methods. OGF is focused on developing and promoting innovative scalable techniques, applications and infrastructures to improve productivity in the enterprise and within the international research, science and business communities. OGF accomplishes its work through open forums, interactions and events that build the community, explore trends, share optimal approaches, document findings and consolidate these results where appropriate into standards. The output products that result from this process document and codify best practices and standards that provide the basis for some of the largest and most powerful operational computing infrastructure systems in the world. Several new efforts are underway to modernize and make relevant the various activities of the community and to create new ways for those interested in these topics to communicate. Please stand by for some new announcements that will set the context and provide information for these efforts. Meanwhile please feel free to make use of the resources above and provide feedback (ideally as pull requests for the relevant components on GitHub) for things you find on which you can suggest refinements or improvements.
