Call for Session Requests for OGF 44, May 21-22 2015 and options for future events

Dear OGF community members and participants, We had a great time at the mostly-NSI plus a other sessions OGF 43 last week! The interactions with the GENI, GLIF and US Ignite organizers were very positive and I believe NSI will also be planning to schedule sessions at OGF 44 in Lisbon May 21-22. They are also discussing a late September meeting in Prague, joint again with GLIF. Our next gathering of all groups is OGF 44, 21-22 May 2015 at the EGI Conference taking place all that week in Lisbon Portugal. Details, venue and lodging information are available at the following link and on the OGF 44 page on our web site. http://conf2015.egi.eu We need to fix the options for events beyond OGF 44. Our in-person events are useful to our community and help us to make progress together on documents, status reports, BoFs for information and new activities, etc. TO bring these off in the most positive way required organization, session requests and volunteers Summer/fall/winter conferences and events at which we could put OGF meetings or co-host an event. (We attended this last year when it was in London and had good turnout for OCCI) - UCC 2015 early December in Cyprus (We held a Cloud Plugfest there last year in London) We also continue to support the ongoing cloud developer engagement Cloud Plugfest series. These are very successful events in terms of getting people who are interested in writing code and using infrastructures to look at and use the standards-based implementations that we have. If you would like to help host a Cloud Plugfest or smaller "meetup"-style event oriented at developers in your city or at a conference you are organizing, please let us know. To express your opinions on future events or better yet, volunteer to help host or organize one so we don't pick wrongly from your point of view, please send a message to events(a)ogf.org or standards(a)ogf.org or directly to Andre Merzky, Andrew Grimshaw or myself, or to your area director or group leaders. This is your organization and we depend on feedback from you to keep it going. Final call for registrations and session requests for OGF 43, March 25-27 2014 at GEC 22 with co-located events!

Dear colleagues, We are seeing a very satisfying turnout for the NSI and networking discussions to take place along with the GLIF Techs meeting March 25-27 as co-located events with the GENI Engineering Conference March 23-26 in Crystal City, Virginia. There is somewhat less turnout for other group meetings. If you plan to attend or would like to make use of the session time we have available, please contact me or send a message to standards(a)ogf.org<mailto:standards@ogf.org> or events(a)ogf.org<mailto:events@ogf.org> right away! We have topics that we would like to cover, and the sessions can be used to coordinate mostly-remote meetings if that is the best way to make use of the time available. We do have sessions planned on RESTful API design, on security (authentication and authorization) for software defined and virtualized networks, and on other topics. Announcement: Daffodil 1.0 Release

Dear OGF community members, Please see the announcement below to the DFDL mailing list of general availability of v1.0.0 of the open source Daffodil implementation of OGF's Data Format Description Language (DFDL, http://www.ogf.org/documents/GFD.207.pdf) The DFDL group has been busy publishing not only this updated version of the DFDL spec, but also a set of useful experience documents, GFD.214, GFD.215 and GFD.216 just published. If you have not yet had the opportunity to try out DFDL in person, please read the description on that link in the "Standards" section of the OGF web site or directly at https://ogf.org/dfdl/ for a tutorial and background information. Daffodil joins the commercial implementations of DFDL that are already built into products by IBM. There is also a useful and growing set of public schemas for DFDL available on GitHub at https://github.com/DFDLSchemas for a variety of commercial and scientific data formats including vCard, PCAP packet capture, electronic payment system and transaction log formats, military and health care records formats. We welcome the news of this open source product availability and look forward to additional useful work from the DFDL group. Major features that make up this release include: - Command line interface available for Linux, Windows, and Mac - API available in both Java and Scala - Interactive debugger to incrementally step through a parse - Test harness using Test Data Markup Language (TDML) - Ability to save and reload Daffodil parsers - Support for parsing both textual and binary data - Unbounded lookahead with backtracking guided by asserts and discriminators - Numeric representations in text and two's complement binary - Reusable definitions of formats and escape schemes - DFDL expressions and variables for dynamic formats - Delimited text with initiators, terminators, and separators - Text justification (left, right, or center) with padding - Binary data alignment, byte order, and bit order - Fixed and variable data lengths - Simple types like string, integer, floating point, hexBinary, date, and time - Ordered sequences and choices - Arrays with fixed or variable repetitions - XSD facets and restrictions for validation Although Daffodil has reached this milestone, Daffodil continues active development, with some features not yet available. All OGF documents (including any that are open for public comment) may be found here: www.ogf.org/ogf/doku.php/documents/documents The new document: * GFD-E.216, "Data Format Description Language (DFDL) v1.0 Experience Document 3 Bit Order and Encodings." M. Beckerle, via DFDL-WG. Abstract: This document provides experience information to the OGF community on the original Data Format Description Language (DFDL) 1.0 specification (GFD-P-R.174). Modeling a MIL-STD-2045 header in DFDL v1.0 is not possible without the addition of new capabilities for specifying bit order and non-standard encodings. There are many related military- standard binary data formats which are similar, and so cannot be modeled in DFDL. This document describes the new properties and property values that are required to successfully model this format.
