OGF 43 / GEC 22 / US Ignite / GLIF Techs meeting #23 - early bird registration reminder

OGF colleagues, With thanks and a hat tip to Kevin Meynell, please see the following reminder of upcoming deadlines for early-bird registration and hotel special rates for the upcoming GEC 22, including US Ignite, OGF 43 and GLIF Techs meeting #23. The meetings are all being handled by one registration. GEC 22 and US Ignite run from March 23-26 and OGF 43 + GLIF overlap with this, running from March 25-27 (26 for OGF-only meetings, and NSI+GLIF March 26-27, with room for any additional meetings that emerge from the call for session requests also). There will be a virtual Cloud Plugfest all that week, allowing participants to take advantage of access to experts on various cloud standards and implementations. GEC 22 includes a Developer Day March 26 at this event, and a demo Tuesday March 24 of the US NSF CloudLab environment. For those interested in Cloud Privacy, there will be a Public Sector Cloud Summit hosted nearby in Reston, Virginia by our Cloud Plugfest partners, the Cloud Standards Customer Council, that you can attend also at a modest additional fee; otherwise attendance at the Virtual Cloud Plugfest is free, and the other events just mentioned are included in the registration for the GEC event. Please register early for GEC 22 and book your hotel to take advantage of these reduced rates. Why you should work with open standards organizations, and register for OGF 43 and 44 (and beyond!)

Dear OGF work and community group members, This is a personal appeal. Today, just hours ago, I ran into the following terms of service for a company’s API that left me stunned, and helped to serve as a reminder to me as to why we do the work that you and your colleagues have been doing in this organization. The company in question seem to have locked down every other aspect, but neglected to copyright the terms of service themselves, so I feel free to include them below, verbatim except for the organization’s name being left out and certain specific terms highlighted in boldface: "Restrictions. End User acknowledges and agrees that the structure, organization and sequence of the [XXXXXX] Software, [XXXXXX] Site, [XXXXXX] Platform and Documentation constitute valuable trade secrets of [XXXXXX] and its licensors. Dear OGF working and community groups, We have been asked to pass on that Early-Bird Registration has been extended to 16 February for the ISGC 2015 conference coming up soon in Taipei. Many activities of interest to the OGF community will take place at this conference, including (we believe) a CAOPS working group meeting. Please also note that OGF 43 is scheduled to take place the following week in the Washington DC area in conjunction with the GENI Engineering Conference, US Ignite and GLIF meetings, and early registration ends March 1 for that event. A fundamental technical challenge is to support a broad range of application usage scenarios and modalities on a range of platforms with varying performance. The first generation of DCI has resulted in important scientific results as well as advances in the state-of-practice of delivering DCI as services to the user community, broadly defined. However, a complete conceptual framework for DCI design principles remains prominent by its absence. This missing framework prevents an objective assessment of important technical as well as policy considerations. The SCREAM workshop generally aims to address this gap, and specifically aims to understand, through a combination of experience, application requirements, and conceptual models, how to best to create a conceptual framework for the objective design and assessment of distributed cyberinfrastructure. In other words, it aims to build toward the science of cyberinfrastructure upon what has hitherto been a purely empirical approach to cyberinfrastructure design and practice. The SCREAM Workshop is interested in all areas that will further this objective, in particular the interaction of multiple cyberinfrastructure components and systems (distributed computing, broadly defined), including academic and commercial production systems and research testbeds. Significant effort has been invested in the delivery and practice of DCI with different objectives and varying capabilities, and existing (FutureGrid, Open Science Grid, XSEDE, GENI, EGI, PRACE, DAS-n) and previous offerings have yielded valuable information. Enough experience now exists to reflect on what has worked and why, and why some approaches have failed. Thus, we believe the time is appropriate to build upon these lessons towards a next generation of DCI that is designed and architected for well-defined usage modes, performance and capabilities. Although primarily targeted towards computing scientists, we believe this workshop will have an impact beyond the computing specialist in light of the fact that production cyberinfrastructure impacts the effectiveness of other science & engineering endeavors. This workshop will welcome technical contributions delivered via research-based results, experience papers, and vision papers. Understanding the principles and science of cyberinfrastructure has impact beyond just the computing aspects.
