Announcing a newly published Draft Recommendation document in the GGF document series: Title: A GridRPC Model and API for End-User Applications Author/editor: H. Nakada et al. GFD #: GFD-I.052 Download link: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_docs_final.htm Abstract: This document presents a model and API for GridRPC, i.e., a remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism for grid environments. Specifically this document is targeted for end-user applications, not middleware. That is to say, this document presents a simpler version of the GridRPC model and API that is completely sufficient for end-users and does not include the more complex features and capabilities required for building middleware. As a Recommendations track document in the Global Grid Forum, the goal of this document is to clearly and unambiguously define the syntax and semantics for GridRPC, thereby enabling a growing user base to take an advantage of multiple implementations. The motivation for this document is to provide an easy avenue of adoption for grid computing, since (1) RPC is an established distributed computing paradigm, and (2) there is a growing user-base for network-enabled services. Treadwell GFD #: GFD-I.052 Download link: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_docs_final.htm Abstract: The Global Grid Forum (GGF) has embraced the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) as the industry blueprint for standards-based grid computing. âOpenâ refers to the process used to develop standards that achieve interoperability. âGridâ is concerned with the integration, virtualization, and management of services and resources in a distributed, heterogeneous environment. It is âservice-orientedâ because it delivers functionality as loosely coupled, interacting services aligned with industry-accepted Web service standards. The âarchitectureâ defines the components, their organizations and interactions, and the design philosophy used. While much progress has been made with OGSA, there remains a lack of clarity concerning exactly what OGSA is, who defines it, what will be defined when, and who is contributing to its development. This informational document answers these questions by providing a snapshot of the evolving OGSA space and an explanation of the direction chosen by OGSA-WG and GGF. -- Greg Newby (GGF Editor)

A major part of this framework is a language in which to describe the components and systems that are required. GridWorld/GGF15 October 3 - 6, 2005 Boston Park Plaza Hotel **** Presentation opportunities are available in some GridWorld/GGF15 Community activities - see below. Information about the complete community program can be accessed via http://www.ggf.org/ggf_events_ggf15_Community_Involvement.htm. **** Campus Grids Sunday, 02-October (Harvard University) with GridWorld/GGF15 panels on Monday, 03-October Production Grid Services and Harvard University are sponsoring a workshop on Grids on Campus. The workshop will be held at Harvard University on Sunday, October 2, 2005, from 9am-3pm. There is a Call for Speakers online at www.psc.edu/~lfm/PSC/Grid/PGS-RG. As followup, there will be two roundtable discussions at GGF on Monday, October 2, to look at common areas of interest identified during the workshop. More information is also available at the PGS-RG website. **** Leveraging Site Infrastructure for Multi-Site Grids Monday, 03-October 11:00am - 7:30p This community activity will explore the how VOs spanning multiple sites can benefit from increased leveraging of the infrastructure of those sites. Both traditional high-performance computing sites as well as other types of institutions such as academic campuses will be explored. Also explored will be some of the challenges involved in this model, including standards, VO-vs-site roles and attributes, and privacy. The format of this activity will be a series of half-hour presentations on featured projects, including GEON, LAITS, SERVOGrid, and LEAD. We also welcome 10-15 minute briefings. The format will be a series of invited talks, and a panel discussion. The goal is to foster lively discussions on web services performance. This pseudo-tutorial will provide a thorough overview of Web Services whilst allowing participants to ask detailed (and perhaps lengthy) questions. The sessions are being organised for groups in which development of Web Services, although required, is not the core business of the group. The organisers, the Network Measurements-WG, are one such group.
