GridWorld/GGF15 Overview (3-6 October, 2005, Boston, MA, USA) Building on the success of the Enterprise program offered at GGF12 (Brussels, September 2004), GGF has teamed with IDG World Expo to develop a follow-on event called GridWorld. The event will consist of an Enterprise Program (4-5 October), a Community Program (3-6 October), and the customary [GGF15] group sessions (3-6 October). The Enterprise Program, themed "Grid in Action: Explore. Adopt. Deploy", will contain keynote presentations and panels exploring the benefits of grid technologies, how to adopt grids via a pilot project, and how to deploy grids more broadly in an enterprise. Attendees will hear grid deployment experiences from companies in several industries including entertainment, finance, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, manufacturing, semiconductor design, and others. A link to the preliminary program is available at: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_events_schedule_ggf15.htm The Community Program emphasizes the applications and operation of grids in eScience and industrial contexts at a more technical level. The program will consist of workshops, invited talks, technical tutorials, and demonstrations of standards-based implementations of grid software. For more information about GGF Community activities, please email communities(a)ggf.org. At every GGF event, including this inaugural GridWorld, GGF groups meet to gather requirements, discuss best practices and advance grid specifications toward publication. As a result, the customary "GGF15" group sessions will be offered in addition to the Enterprise and Community Programs. 3. JSDL is used to describe the requirements of computational jobs for submission to resources, particularly in Grid environments, though not restricted to the latter. Announcing a newly published Informational document in the GGF document series: Title: Peer-to-Peer Requirements on the Open Grid Services Architecture Framework Author/editor: Karan Bhatia GFD #: GFD-I.049 Download link: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_docs_final.htm Abstract: As the next generation of grid computing protocols centered on web services and the Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) are developed, the Peer-to-Peer community must determine how these protocols can be used for building Peer-to-Peer applications. Such applicability is not immediately obvious since Peer-to-Peer systems have significantly different properties compared to traditional server-based grid systems. For example, Peer-to-Peer systems exhibit different models of security and trust (machine user is typically also the administrator), have different connectivity characteristics (machine IP addresses may change due to mobility or firewalls/nats), and different usage models (instant messaging, file sharing, and collaboration). Because of these differences, Peer-to-Peer applications are likely to require different capabilities in the infrastructure than server-based grid applications. Yet despite these differences, the shear numbers of desktop systems available today make the potential advantages of interoperability between desktops and servers into a single grid system quite compelling. Hence, the focus of this document is on developing a set of requirements for OGSA to be used to build Peer-to-Peer applications. -- Greg Newby (GGF Editor)

Announcing a newly published Informational document in the GGF document series: Title: Authority Recognition Author/editor: Paul Madsen GFD #: GFD-I.048 Download link: http://www.ggf.org/ggf_docs_final.htm Abstract: Trust between entities in many Grid transactions is enabled by a separate authority issuing assertions (e.g. X.509 certificates, SAML assertions, Kerberos tickets, etc) regarding the identity and/or other characteristics of the actors involved. The assertions issued by an authority must be recognized as valid and appropriate to a relying partyâs requirements before that party will rely on them. Whether or not an assertion from a particular authority is appropriate will depend on a number of factors, including the commitments the authority makes with respect to the assertion, the liabilities the authority is willing to assume, and the obligations assumed by the relying party if they use the assertion. Existing mechanisms do not facilitate the dissemination of this information from the authority to the relying party to enable an informed recognition decision. This paper explores the concepts and issues involved in an authority making available to potential relying parties this information. Additionally, we propose a representative model for using XML and a publish-and-subscribe model to offer a simpler solution to the authority recognition problem. -- Greg Newby (GGF Editor)
