In OS virtualization, guest operating systems are isolated from physical computational resources. In server virtualization, application servers are isolated from physical server resources. In network virtualization, network services or applications are isolated from physical network resources. One of the major features of Grids is the sharing of heterogeneous resources, which can be facilitated by various levels of virtualization. In other words, Grids should provide holistic or end-to-end virtualization. It is obvious that proper resource management is key to providing effective virtualization. However, resource management for virtualization is a challenge (as opposed to typical resource management) in that there is no trivial way of virtualizing resources and presenting virtualized resources to the upper layers. It is even a bigger challenge when end-to-end (E2E) virtualization is considered, for example, when OS and server virtualization interplay with storage and network virtualization for providing an effective E2E virtualized environment. This workshop will offer a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and experiences on problems, challenges, solutions and potential future research, as well as development issues, in this new field of E2E Virtualization and Grid Management. In addition to paper presentations, the workshop provides an intimate setting for discussion and debate through panels and group work. The GridNets conference series is an annual international meeting which provides a focused and highly interactive forum where researchers and technologists have the opportunity to present and discuss leading research, developments, and future directions in the Grid networking area. The objective of this event is to serve as both the premier conference presenting best Grid Networking research and a forum where new concepts can be introduced and explored. The previous events in this series were: GridNets 2004 in San Jose (USA), GridNets 2005 in Boston (USA), GridNets 2006 in San Jose (USA). All of these events have been successful in attracting high quality papers and a wide international participation. From the first event through the fourth, we have been known as the GridNets Workshop affiliated with the IEEE BroadNets conference series. For this, our fifth event, we will convene our first meeting as a conference and in Europe. The proceedings will be published by ACM and will be available through ACM Digital Library. Best papers will be considered for publication in a special section of Elsevier Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) - The International Journal of Grid Computing: Theory, Methods and Application. Grid developers and practicioners are increasingly realising the importance of an efficient network support. Entire classes of applications would greatly benefit by a network-aware Grid middleware, able to effectively manage the network resource in terms of scheduling, access and use. Conversely, the peculiar requirements of Grid applications provide stimulating drivers for new challenging research towards the development of Grid-aware networks. Cooperation between Grid middleware and network infrastructure driven by a common control plane is a key factor to effectively empower the global Grid platform for the execution of network-intensive applications, requiring massive data transfers, very fast and low-latency connections, and stable and guaranteed transmission rates. Big e-science projects, as well as industrial and engineering applications for data analysis, image processing, multimedia, or visualisation just to name a few are awaiting an efficient Grid network support. They would be boosted by a global Grid platform enabling end-to-end dynamic bandwidth allocation, broadband and low-latency access, interdomain access control, and other network performance monitoring capabilities. The two organizations are working together to ensure that their standards for GRID communications are written with common goals by their respective industrial and the research communities. This week ETSI Technical Committee GRID has co-located its meeting with the Open Grid Forum's 20th meeting in Manchester, UK. The GridNets conference series is an annual international meeting which provides a focused and highly interactive forum where researchers and technologists have the opportunity to present and discuss leading research, developments, and future directions in the Grid networking area. The objective of this event is to serve as both the premier conference presenting best Grid Networking research and a forum where new concepts can be introduced and explored. The previous events in this series were: GridNets 2004 in San Jose (USA), GridNets 2005 in Boston (USA), GridNets 2006 in San Jose (USA). All of these events have been successful in attracting high quality papers and a wide international participation. From the first event through the fourth, we have been known as the GridNets Workshop affiliated with the IEEE BroadNets conference series. For this, our fifth event, we will convene our first meeting as a conference and in Europe. The proceedings will be published by ACM and will be available through ACM Digital Library. Best papers will be considered for publication in a special section of Elsevier Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) - The International Journal of Grid Computing: Theory, Methods and Application. Grid developers and practicioners are increasingly realising the importance of an efficient network support. Entire classes of applications would greatly benefit by a network-aware Grid middleware, able to effectively manage the network resource in terms of scheduling, access and use. Conversely, the peculiar requirements of Grid applications provide stimulating drivers for new challenging research towards the development of Grid-aware networks. Cooperation between Grid middleware and network infrastructure driven by a common control plane is a key factor to effectively empower the global Grid platform for the execution of network-intensive applications, requiring massive data transfers, very fast and low-latency connections, and stable and guaranteed transmission rates. Big e-science projects, as well as industrial and engineering applications for data analysis, image processing, multimedia, or visualisation just to name a few are awaiting an efficient Grid network support. They would be boosted by a global Grid platform enabling end-to-end dynamic bandwidth allocation, broadband and low-latency access, interdomain access control, and other network performance monitoring capabilities. **** MetroGrid workshop : Metrology for Grid Networks **** within the framework of GridNets 2007 International Conference October 17, 2007, Lyon (France) http://gridnets.org/2007/MetroGrid-WS.html Keywords: computing grids, metrology, traffic, statistical inference, signal processing, stochastic modeling, heavy tail distributions, long range dependence, self-similarity, non-stationarity. The constantly increasing interest devoted to grids, both in terms of developments and applications, proves that distributed computing has now attained a sufficient degree of maturity to be considered as a new network paradigm on its own. As a result, it becomes more and more unrealistic to simply transpose to grid contexts, existing mechanisms that were initially thought and developed for different platforms. Grids specificities, such as the cooperating equipments number and heterogeneity, the number of independent processes, the treatments, bandwidth and stock capacities, advocate to revisit the algorithms, as well as the control and operating mechanisms, in order to reach optimal performances. But to succeed, a full comprehension of the dynamics that underly the interacting processes is a prerequisite for tailoring adapted exchange and routing strategies. The same need arose in wide area networks (Internet), that prompted the development of a dedicated metrology activity, leading researchers to resort to statistical analysis and to stochastic modeling of the traffic flows to match versatile theoretical processes. However, nothing guarantees that these models remain valid in a computing grid infrastructure, nor it is proved that traffic flows in grids present the same statistical properties as the ones evidenced with Internet. The workshop will open with two tutorials aimed to sketch a state of the art in metrology, and to highlight similarities and differences between standard (Internet) and grid networks. MetroGrid workshop solicits papers that address all ingredients of a treatment chain, encompassing: - Metrics and Measurements issues o definition of sensible metrics o measuring level (TCP, IP, packet, flow,...) o sampling rates and sub-sampling - Technical considerations o importance of grid topology o instrumentation for acquisition o experimental setups and scenarios - Data processing o time series analysis (LRD, self-similarity, stationarity assessment,...) o statistical inference (Markov models, heavy tail distribution estimation,...) o stochastic modeling (multi-fractals, goodness-of-fit,...) - Impacts on performances o quality of service o resource management o robustness and resilience issues Accepted papers will be published in the GridNets 2007 conference proceedings. Proceedings will be published by ACM and will be available through ACM Digital Library.
