(Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Utility computing enabled by high bit rate networks: Opportunity and requirements Workshop collocated with GridNets 2007 organized by CARRIOCAS [1] project ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for papers Scientific or industrial computing/data intensive applications may benefit on a on-demand basis from powerful end systems such as computing or storage servers provided by external companies/service providers and remotely accessible via metropolitan or wide area networks. Enabling a large scale adoption of such an utility computing model requires the support from shared carrier networks by opposition to dedicated research networks. However, for production level networking, this raises two main issues: - Business related: Are the concerned users ready to use externalized resource and to converge their use on a shared network ? What would be the business relationship between application users, network operator and resource providers ? - Technical related: What are the technical constraints on the networks resulting from this usage ? How do they vary from one application to another ? Which kind of interactions between the applications and the network belonging to different administrative domains can exist to enforce the network service required by the distributed applications? The workshop intends to address these issues from these two interrelated realms, by discussing in particular the following points: - Interest, enablers, and feasibility of the externalization of computing and storage resources through a network, drivers and brakes for such an evolution. - Typology of distributed applications, factors of differentiation (number of sites and users, data volumes, sequence of application sessions, capacity to plan the phases, level of interactivity ...) - Requirements on the quality of service at network level: constraints of bandwidth, latency, connectivity dynamics, security .... The relevant contributions for this workshop are in particular among the following themes: - Description of practical experiences of distributed applications over long distance networks, performance assessment - Analysis of network requirements for specific applications in industrial or scientific domains, in areas such as aeronautics, automotive, energy, pharmaceutical, climatology, biology, physics, finance, etc. - Impact of network QoS (throughput, latency ....) over application quality of experiences: theoretical and/or experimental analysis - Scalability analysis of on-demand/scheduled usage of distributed resources with respect to the network size, to the number of users, of applicative sessions, of resource servers, etc ... - Application-network interaction model: Overlay model versus integrated model - Co-allocation and orchestration of end-system and network resources, network (re)configuration driven by application needs - Security, trustability aspects in utility computing - Market analysis and business models studies related to utility computing over converged networks - Associated service definition and service level agreements encompassing both network and computing/storage resources A one-page description of the proposed contribution should be sent to Olivier.Audouin(a)alcatel-lucent.fr and Dominique.Verchere(a)alcatel-lucent.fr . The GridNets conference series is an annual international meeting which provides a focused and highly interactive forum where researchers and technologists have the opportunity to present and discuss leading research, developments, and future directions in the Grid networking area. The objective of this event is to serve as both the premier conference presenting best Grid Networking research and a forum where new concepts can be introduced and explored. The previous events in this series were: GridNets 2004 in San Jose (USA), GridNets 2005 in Boston (USA), GridNets 2006 in San Jose (USA). All of these events have been successful in attracting high quality papers and a wide international participation. From the first event through the fourth, we have been known as the GridNets Workshop affiliated with the IEEE BroadNets conference series. For this, our fifth event, we will convene our first meeting as a conference and in Europe. The proceedings will be published by ACM and will be available through ACM Digital Library. Best papers will be considered for publication in a special section of Elsevier Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) - The International Journal of Grid Computing: Theory, Methods and Application. Grid developers and practicioners are increasingly realising the importance of an efficient network support. Entire classes of applications would greatly benefit by a network-aware Grid middleware, able to effectively manage the network resource in terms of scheduling, access and use. Conversely, the peculiar requirements of Grid applications provide stimulating drivers for new challenging research towards the development of Grid-aware networks. Cooperation between Grid middleware and network infrastructure driven by a common control plane is a key factor to effectively empower the global Grid platform for the execution of network-intensive applications, requiring massive data transfers, very fast and low-latency connections, and stable and guaranteed transmission rates. Big e-science projects, as well as industrial and engineering applications for data analysis, image processing, multimedia, or visualisation just to name a few are awaiting an efficient Grid network support. They would be boosted by a global Grid platform enabling end-to-end dynamic bandwidth allocation, broadband and low-latency access, interdomain access control, and other network performance monitoring capabilities. EVGM 2007 ======= 1st IEEE/IFIP International Workshop on End-to-end Virtualization and Grid Management ===================================================== San José, California, USA - held as part of Manweek 2007 =================================== Virtualization allows layer n (upper layer) to function independently and effectively without being intrinsically tied to layer n-1 (lower layer). In OS virtualization, guest operating systems are isolated from physical computational resources. In server virtualization, application servers are isolated from physical server resources. In network virtualization, network services or applications are isolated from physical network resources. One of the major features of Grids is the sharing of heterogeneous resources, which can be facilitated by various levels of virtualization. In other words, Grids should provide holistic or end-to-end virtualization. It is obvious that proper resource management is key to providing effective virtualization. However, resource management for virtualization is a challenge (as opposed to typical resource management) in that there is no trivial way of virtualizing resources and presenting virtualized resources to the upper layers. It is even a bigger challenge when end-to-end (E2E) virtualization is considered, for example, when OS and server virtualization interplay with storage and network virtualization for providing an effective E2E virtualized environment. This workshop will offer a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners to exchange ideas and experiences on problems, challenges, solutions and potential future research, as well as development issues, in this new field of E2E Virtualization and Grid Management. In addition to paper presentations, the workshop provides an intimate setting for discussion and debate through panels and group work. The need to evolve management tools and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobility and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, data/voice convergence, and the integration of computing and communications in all devices. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating such services. Inevitably, management is a key element in addressing this challenge. Autonomous services and the service-oriented architecture are emerging concepts that can enable efficient management of resources in these complex systems. Virtualization, in which properties of a service are decoupled from its physical realization over networking and IT infrastructure, is capturing the imagination of the industry and the research community alike. The goal of DSOM 2007 is to shed light on related research issues, investigating questions such as: what is different about virtualization in 2007 compared to the mainframe era, what advances in network control and self-management may advance virtualization, what new problems we will incur when managing virtualized networks and services, and how management itself may benefit from virtualization. Submissions on topics related to managing virtualization of networks and services are hence particularly encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Virtualization of networks and services - Management implications of virtualization - Managing security in a virtual environment - Self-management and virtualization - Troubleshooting virtualized networks and services - Performance and QoS management in virtualized environments - Management patterns and algorithms for scalable management - Controlling the tradeoffs between overhead, accuracy, robustness, and security - Distributed, decentralized, and peer-to-peer management - Management of next generation service networks - Monitoring and measurements - Anomaly detection and data mining for management - Fault management and event correlation - Management and operations of massively redundant data centers - Semantic Web techniques for management - Instrumentation and embedded management - Implementation, deployment, and operations experiences PAPER SUBMISSION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- It is planned to publish DSOM 2007 proceedings in Springer-Verlag's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. Paper submissions must present original, unpublished research or experiences. Late-breaking advances and work-in-progress reports from ongoing research are also encouraged. Papers under review elsewhere MUST NOT be submitted to DSOM 2007. Authors are requested to submit either long or short papers, strictly in LNCS format: - Long papers (up to 12 single-spaced single-column pages) - Short papers describing work-in-progress (up to 4 pages) Submissions exceeding the above mentioned page limits will not be reviewed.
