YOSHIDA,Yukihiko,"Leni Riefenstahl and German Expressionism: A Study of Visual Cultural Studies Using Transdisciplinary Semantic Space of Specialized Dictionaries",Technoetic Arts: a journal of speculative research (Editor Roy Ascott),intellect, Volume6 Issue3,2008 http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journalissues.php?issn=1477965X&v=6&i=3 Abstract: This paper reports on an analysis of the work of Leni Riefenstahl, and German expressionism, through the use of trans-disciplinary semantic associative search in specialized databased dictionaries1. Within this database space (Kitagawa and Kiyokim 1993), the quantitative data of objects as representation can be visualized by number. While the method of image analysis is qualitative, it is based on a quantitative analysis of visual representation. Through this analysis, Riefenstahl's film Olympia - Fest der Volker is compared with the Nazi ideology of the body image. The film is often categorized as $B!F(Bromantic$B!G(B; however, this paper proposes a new interpretation based on theories of Jonathan Crary, and Martin Jay, which are combined using the mechanism of connotation in searching database systems. We proposs that, in the context of Visual Culture Studies, the use of digital technologies may provide new possibilities for research in the humanities. If you have chance, please check it out. **** CALL FOR PAPERS **** 3rd International Workshop on Web Service Composition and Adaptation (WSCA-2009) Website: http://lsdis.cs.uga.edu/WSCA2009 July 6th, 2009, Los Angeles, California, USA Affiliated with the IEEE International Conference on Web Services, 2009 Recent advances in networks, information and computation grids, and Web languages and protocols have enabled development of, and led to the proliferation of, distributed and autonomously developed Web services. These include WSDL/SOAP based services well suited for enterprise applications as well as lighter-weight WebAPIs and RESTful services widely used in Web applications. Correspondingly, the construction and deployment of mashups and composite services that combine and reuse independently developed component services is an important capability in the emerging Web-based computing infrastructure. Given that business and application needs continually change, and component services may also independently change, a number of challenges in provide dynamic, flexible and adaptable approaches to such integration and composition of services remains an important challenge. Against this background, this workshop, to be held in conjunction with 2009 IEEE International Conference on Web Services, invites manuscripts addressing various aspects related to (a) discovery or selection of component services that will be integrated, (b) use of semantics to ease data mediation and integration of component services, (c) developing approaches to handling service failures, changes in service functionalities, and changes to quality of service parameters, and (d) understanding external events, which are the sources of volatility in service compositions. Insightful examples of and approaches to service composition and adaptation in a variety of applications such as scientific and engineering workflows, mobile computing, sensor networks, consumer and social networking, are welcomed as well. Workshops and Tutorials will be held on Tuesday, September 1st, the day before the regular conference technical sessions begin, at the conference hotel in Redondo Beach, CA, USA. ==== WORKSHOPS ===== K-CAP workshops provide an informal setting where the participants have the opportunity to discuss specific technical topics in an atmosphere that fosters the active exchange of ideas. Our aim for the workshop program is to promote and collect multidisciplinary research directions that contribute to knowledge capture from a variety of sources. Members from all research areas related to knowledge capture are invited to submit workshop proposals. We particularly welcome workshops at discipline boundaries. Modern technologies not only are themselves knowledge-intensive technologies, but also produce enormous amounts of new information that we must process and aggregate. These technologies require knowledge capture, which involve the extraction of useful knowledge from vast and diverse sources of information as well as its acquisition directly from users. Driven by the demands for knowledge-based applications and the unprecedented availability of information on the Web, the study of knowledge capture has a renewed importance. Researchers that work in the area of knowledge capture traditionally belong to several distinct research communities, including knowledge engineering, machine learning, natural language processing, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence and the Semantic Web.
