PolicyGrid (www.policygrid.org) is one of the ESRC National Centre for eSocial Science research nodes. The Node’s research agenda assists the social science community to exploit the full potential of emerging Semantic Web technologies and standards in the Grid context. The Node brings computer scientists and social scientists together to focus on the challenges of using Semantic Grid technologies to enable more powerful analysis of mixed-method data (e.g. surveys and interviews, case studies, simulations) thus adding significant value to the work of social scientists engaged in the creation and analysis of evidence bases for policy development and evaluation. The postgraduate research assistant will be part of a larger team, and will focus on the development of semantic grid infrastructure and lightweight metadata (ontology + folksonomy) support for management of social science datasets. You should have an excellent Honours degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, and preferably an MSc. You are expected to be a competent programmer in Java, and have knowledge/experience of distributed information management (including ontologies). Prior knowledge in the area of social science is not essential, but would be an asset. The post will involve conceptual/theoretical work, and also implementation of software. Ideally you will have some knowledge and experience of Web/Grid services and e-science. The post is offered for 24 months on a part time (50% FTE) basis. If appointed, it is a condition that you will be required to undertake postgraduate research leading to a higher degree, in an area related to the research activities of the PolicyGrid Node. Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1st International Workshop on Web Service Composition and Adaptation (WSCA-2007) http://www.cild.iastate.edu/wsca Affiliated with 5th IEEE International Conference on Web Services 2007 (http://www.icws.org ), July 9-13, 2007, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Recent advances in networks, information and computation grids, and WWW have resulted in the proliferation of a multitude of physically distributed and autonomously developed Web services. The W3C Web Services Architecture defines ``Web service as a software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network. It has an interface described in a machine processible format (specifically WSDL) and other systems can interact with it in a manner prescribed by its description using SOAP messages, typically conveyed using HTTP with an XML serialization in conjunction with other Web-related standards''. Correspondingly, the construction and deployment of composite services by combining and reusing independently developed component services is an important capability in the emerging Web-based computing infrastructure. Processes offer key IT capabilities in businesses as well as in scientific research, and key enabler of broad variety of applications including e-Enterprise, e-Business, e-Government, and e-Science. Since many processes need to change to adjust with respect to changing computing and business environments, adaptability of processes is also a key requirement. The workshop will be held in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Web Services. ICWS is a ``prime international forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange the latest fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of Web services, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of Web services.'' The workshop will complement this theme of the conference and aims to conduct a focused discussion on one of the main topics of interest in Web service research: service composition. The discussions will not only bring out the current state of advances in Web service composition but also provide valuable insights for future research avenues and for work-in progress in the domain of Web service composition. Specific topics of interest include: - Model-based service composition - Static and dynamic service composition - Reuse in service composition: compatibility and substitutability - Adaptation and Evolution of services and processes - Formal methods in service composition - Verification of service composition - Fault tolerant service composition - Optimization in service composition and service/process adaptation - Ontology-based approaches to service composition - Secure service composition - Elicitation and modeling of functional and non-functional requirements in service composition - Comparing and ranking of alternative solutions in service composition - Software infrastructure for service composition - Case studies, and applications (e.g., in e-science and scientific workflows) Submission guidelines: Authors are asked to submit original, unpublished research papers that are not being considered for publication in any other forum. Call for Papers [Apologies for multiple copies] ******************************************************* AAAI2007's Workshop on Semantic e-Science (SeS07) 23 July, 2007, Vancouver, Canada, co-located with AAAI'07 http://neuroweb.med.yale.edu/ses2007 ******************************************************* As semantic technology has been gaining momentum in various e-Science areas (for example, W3C's new interest group for semantic web health care and life science), it is important to offer semantic-based methodologies, tools, middleware to facilitate scientific knowledge modeling, logical-based hypothesis checking, semantic data integration and application composition, integrated knowledge discovery and data analyzing for different e-Science applications. Partially influenced by the Artificial Intelligence community, the Semantic Web researchers have largely focused on formal aspects of semantic representation languages or general-purpose semantic application development, with inadequate consideration of requirements from specific science areas. On the other hand, general science researchers are growing ever more dependent on the web, but they have no coherent agenda for exploring the emerging trends on the semantic web technologies. It urgently requires the development of a multi-disciplinary field to foster the growth and development of e-Science applications based on the semantic technologies and related knowledge-based approaches. SeS2007 aims to provide an inter-disciplinary forum for researchers from both the Semantic Web community, and general science communities including the life science community. a question about AI and eScience

A question to start the new year... Quite often when we talk about Semantic Grid we observe that in practice a little bit of semantics goes a long way - the real Semantic Grid deployments haven't made extensive use of advanced techniques. Also some of our predicted areas haven't taken off as we expected 5 years ago - like agents and e-Science. It's easy to see where we are now. But where are we going in this respect...I'd like to ask one simple question and get the views of people on the list: Which techniques from AI will we be using in e-Science in the future - and when? What do you think...agents? Reasoning (where?), planning, knowledge acquisition, machine learning, etc etc...? Robots? Happy New Year! :-) -- Dave
