-- Apologies if you receive multiple copies -- ============================================== The University of Manchester (OntoGrid partner - http://www.ontogrid.eu/) and the Information Management Group (http://img.cs.manchester.ac.uk/) together with Bio-Health Informatics invite you to participate in a two-day tutorial on Ontologies and Semantic Grid. The goal of this tutorial is to provide the attendees with both the theoretical foundations and hands-on experience of ontology design and Semantic Grid middleware use. In particular, attendees will: - Learn the basic principles of RDFS and OWL based ontologies; - Gain hands-on experience with ontology development using the Protégé-OWL tools; - Learn the basic principles of the Semantic Grid and understand what Semantic Grid architectures, such as S-OGSA, propose; - Gain hands-on experience with Grid-compliant ontology access and metadata management components, such as WS-DAIOnt-RDF(S) and the Semantic Binding Service; - Learn how to use these components to build applications. The first day of the tutorial will provide a brief introduction to ontology principles and languages, through to the use of ontology modelling tools. The second day of the tutorial will guide you through the basic principles of the Semantic Grid, and will then focus on the use of semantic provisioning services in Grid middleware. The tutorial will be held on the 15th and 16th of February 2007, in the School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. There will be a registration fee of 30 pounds to cover administrative and catering costs. Due to the hands-on nature of the tutorial, places will be limited to 30 participants, who will be selected from all those who register, so we recommend you to register as soon as possible here (http://www.co-ode.org/events/tutorials/ontogrid02-2006/) and specify clearly the reasons why you want to attend the tutorial. Registration finishes on the 7th of January 2007 and participants will be notified about their acceptance on the 12th of January 2007. Web 2.0 and Grids Workshop at OGF19 ----------------------------------- Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA January 29, 2007 http://www.semanticgrid.org/OGF/ogf19/ This one day workshop, looking at the impact of Web 2.0 technologies and thinking on Grid and e-Science, is being held on Monday January 29 at OGF19 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA, which runs from January 29 - February 2, 2007. The workshop features a series of invited talks starting with an introduction to the technologies and philosophy of Web 2.0 and including an update on Semantic Grid activities, with an emphasis on social networking and collaboration in the context of Grid and e-Science. The keynote speaker is Carole Goble, who will be presenting myExperiment, a personalised environment which enables scientists to share, re-use and repurpose experiments. myExperiment is a very exciting initiative which owes far more to social networking websites such as MySpace and YouTube than to the traditional portals of Grid computing - it has recently been featured by New Scientist. One of the workshop sessions is dedicated to position papers and a panel. We welcome short papers (2-4 pages) describing both current and proposed activities under the general theme of Web 2.0, e-Science and Grids, to be presented as short presentations or demonstrations. Papers will be published as part of the OGF document arising from the workshop. If you plan to submit a position paper, please send your title and abstract as soon as possible (and no later than December 20) to Jade Lodwidge (jl3(a)ecs.soton.ac.uk) - you will receive prompt feedback. The papers, in Word or PDF, must be submitted before January 22 so that we can finalise the programme and make the papers available to workshop attendees in advance. Hello At OGF19 (yes, GGF is now OGF...) in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at the end of January we are running a workshop looking at the future of the Web and the Grid - yes, it's not just semantic web and the Grid but Web 2.0 and the Grid! It's on January 29, the first day of the event. Our keynote speaker is Carole Goble on myExperiment, a personalised environment which enables scientists to share, re-use and repurpose experiments. myExperiment is a very exciting initiative which owes far more to social networking websites such as MySpace and YouTube than to the traditional portals of Grid computing. We want the workshop to deliver a report that captures community practice so that we can have broader impact. So I am about to send out a call for position papers under the general theme of Web 2.0, e-Science and the Grid. These are short papers and one of the reasons for doing this is because I know some of you find it easier to get travel funds if you are presenting. BTW The discounted registration deadline for OGF19 is currently showing as December 8 on the OGF web site, but I have it on the best authority that this is being extended to December 15.
