Hi, In line with Marvin's comments, I think we had this discussion on vector versus singleton at the last F2F. We decided that HPC would have to address both aspects but approach the elemental case first and other situations would be done as extensions. Right? (I am sure we had this discussion since I remember distinctly raising the notion that singleton could also be a "vector of length 0". No doubt, a simple observation. But with implications in the architecture/profile. However, in keeping with having as simple an HPC Profile base case as possible, the HPC Profile will restrict its base case to only allowing singleton vectors. Whether we want to define the BES base case as non-vector operations and then immediately define a vector extension or whether we want to define the base case as vector operations with the restriction being put in the HPC Profile specification is something still to be determined. Telephone and agenda info for this Friday's HPC Profile telecon call

Hi; The first HPC Profile teleconference call will take place this Friday, August 18th at 10AM Eastern Daylight time (7AM PDT). Unfortunately I currently only have a teleconferencing option that provides a toll-free number for the USA and Canada. Everyone else will need to call in to the toll number. I'm exploring other options, but haven't found a satisfactory alternative yet. Poll for weekly telecon call time slot

Hi; I've been trying to get a Microsoft teleconferencing number that allows free international call-ins, but have discovered this is harder to do achieve than I thought. (It looks like I'll need to use LiveMeeting to implement a call-back approach to the problem.) I need to get two things from those people who are interested in participating in a weekly HPC Profile teleconference call: * What day-of-the-week and time slots would you prefer as well as be willing to have this call? (NOTE: we will avoid overlap with the OGSA and BES telecon calls that occur on Thursday mornings (morning in the US) and with the JSDL telecon call that occurs on Wednesday mornings.) * What country would you be calling in from. (I need this to determine the constraints on the teleconferencing system set-up.) My personal preference for a day and time slot would be Tuesday morning or Friday morning. Now that BES has been revised it's time to start defining an HPC Profile

Hi; Up till now the focus of HPC Profile work has effectively been to engage with the BES and JSDL working groups to try to effect changes that would be useful to the HPC Profile specification effort. As a consequence the email traffic and discussions have taken place on the BES and JSDL mailing list and teleconference calls. At the July face-to-face meeting in Argonne we made a lot of progress towards redefining BES in a manner that would nicely support an HPC Profile specification. We also discussed what kinds of restrictions would be appropriate to JSDL for the HPC Profile as well as the possibility of creating a "basic HPC execution" extension profile that could be used instead of the Posix extension in order to support non-Posix (e.g. Windows) execution systems. Given all this, it's now time to start working on a concrete HPC Profile specification. That means that you'll start seeing traffic on the HPC Profile mailing list (ogsa-hpcp-wg) and that we will start holding weekly telecon calls to make forward progress. I'm sending this email to several mailing lists in order to alert everyone to the fact that the ogsa-hpcp-wg mailing list is going to start seeing traffic and will become the locus of the discussion for the HPC Profile work. So if you're interested in participating - or just lurking and watching - please do start monitoring (and contributing to) the ogsa-hpcp-wg mailing list. One of the first things I'll be doing on the mailing list is nailing down a date and time for a recurring telecon call. Also, we've created a place on gridforge for HPC Profile-related documents: https://forge.gridforum.org/projects/ogsa-hpcp-wg/ That's where we will be putting all the documents related to the HPC Profile, including straw-man proposals. Indeed, if you have a straw-man proposal that you'd like to submit concerning any or all aspects of the HPC Profile then please feel free to post your document(s) to gridforge and alert people to them via email to the mailing list.
