VMware vCloud API

Afternoon all, As part of today's call I'd like to take a high level look at the good/bad/ugly of VMware's vCloud API: - Programming Guide<http://communities.vmware.com/static/vcloudapi/vCloud_API_Programming_Guide_v0.8.pdf> - Specification<http://communities.vmware.com/static/vcloudapi/vCloud_API_Specification_v0.8.pdf> The way I see it this is an implementation-specific "private cloud" API (for services running VMware vCloud [Express]) and we're writing a "public cloud" API for various services like/modeled after EC2. That is to say, we have things to learn from their efforts and vice versa. Please have these documents at your disposal for the call. Sam

There appear to be two public clouds (Terremark and Hosting.com) running vCloud, so I don't understand what you're saying here. Wes Felter

Actually, it seems there are 5, if you count vcloud express beta. http://www.vmware.com/appliances/deploy/vcloud-express.html -Adrian On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 11:52 AM, Wes Felter<wesley@felter.org> wrote:

I'm here at VMworld if there is anything in specific that you guys would like me to find out about the vCloud API. I'll be in the Q&A session with Paul Moritz in about 30 minutes. Andrew On Sep 2, 2009, at 11:52 AM, Wes Felter wrote:

I'd like to know: "what's next for this API? what makes it reach version 1.0, and who will use it?" On Wed, Sep 2, 2009 at 12:28 PM, Andrew de Andrade<andrew.andrade@locaweb.com.br> wrote:

The API went into public beta yesterday with 5 major cloud vendors using it. The target market for this API is enterprise public clouds. They also have an express version that they are offering with smaller vendors that will be geared to compete directly with amazon and ec2. This was all announced yesterday in an analyst meeting. I reckon some google searching and information on VMware's site will provide more details than I can give here. I forgot to ask the question about the criteria for 1.0 status.
