Slides about OCCI monitoring
Dear all, I will not be in Madrid next week, but I have prepared some slides that may be useful for those that want to know the content of the document about cloud monitoring that is currently under discussion. The slides start by giving the basic concepts, proceed with a description of the entities that implement the monitoring infrastructure, and conclude with a step by step definition of a non-trivial monitoring infrastructure. This is the link: http://www.slideshare.net/AugustoCiuffoletti/2013-03-occimonitoring-26159563 Comments are welcome, and I wish you a good time in Madrid. -- Augusto Ciuffoletti Dipartimento di Informatica Università di Pisa 56100 - Pisa (Italy)
I remind you that slide sharing services (Jean Parpaillon and I used the
same to distribute our slides), give a "one click" way to send a feedback
to the author, thus contributing to his/her work, by pressing the "likes"
button. It is also very simple to leave a short comment (non necessarily +
or -) to the post. We need feedback.

Quick question: is the proposed schema already implemented somewhere? If so, how are the experiences in respect to usability and performance? 'Rough consensus and running code' is usually the quickest way to agree on a specification :) Best, Andre.

No, there is no running code for the API, and I understand that a piece of
running demo is needed. On the other hand, when I consider this as a target
for my activity, I have problems to identify an attainable and significant
goal: an API that allows to configure a ping between two OpenStack VMs is
meaningless, but expensive. Usability is a key factor that is not
demonstrated by one use case. Performance shoudn't be an issue: it is an
interface to define the infrastructure, not the infrastructure itself.
I read the presentation by Parpaillon, and the idea to represent in XML the
monitoring extension came to my mind: the question is if this is considered
as "running". Or, better, to what extent this operation might be considered
at least as a "proof of concept". Who is going to be convinced by that?
This is probably the next question: given that the problem is defined, and
that the approach to the solution is convincing (110 views during one week
makes one result), we (as a group) should define what kind of result would
be able to foster adoption of a solution, which is the final goal. And I
need help on that way.

A first version of XML representation of OCCI has been implemented in CompatibleOne. Nevertheless, there were no generic XML schema to represent OCCI types. My proposal aims at fullfilling this need. Main objectives are to be able to implement (draft of) specifications as quickly as possible in a framework independant way (rOCCI, pyOCNI, etc.), ie through an XML document. Nevertheless, this proposal has not been implemented yet. I am currently writing an OCCI framework (erocci) in erlang which will accept specifications as XML document, but this is not finished :/ I suppose as soon as the XML representation will be commented and implemented, other framework will use it. I will keep you informed as soon as the framework wil be functional enough to test your draft with it. Best regards, Jean
