Hi Prasad, At the current time, I believe that the focus of OCCI is somewhat different from that of the existing set of OGF specifications. Most of the standards for Grid computing are very specific to the usage models of grid computing, which deal with concepts such as batch jobs, file management, etc, etc. I like to see these as standards for applications which are _accessing_ resources. On the other hand, OCCI, in my mind, is a specification designed to help users to _manage_ resources directly, and is less concerned with the access to those resources once the resources have been set up and running. So the key difference in my mind is that OCCI is a resource management layer specification vs the Grid workload management layer specifications. This is not to say that there won't be intersection points. As the VP of standards (my current role), the standards council and I monitor activity across the multiple OGF working groups, and encourage groups to collaborate where there is some intersection point that they might not be aware of. For example, there might be room for OCCI to present information about resources that is rendered using the GLUE information model. I can also see that when OCCI starts considering how one might expose the management of PaaS offerings, that "Grid", based on existing OGF standards, might be one of the platforms to be exposed. -- Chris On 8/12/09 18:26 , "Renuka Prasad" <prasadtg@gmail.com> wrote:
Hi,
I am interested in knowing the role of existing OGF standards for grid computing in the upcoming cloud technology. Will they will be used as it is or only some standards will be incorporated?
Thanks & Regards, Prasad

Hi everyone,
Last week I presented OCCI at the IGT2009 conference and participated in a short panel discussion about cloud standards, moderated by Reuven Cohen and including a representative of the Zend Simple Cloud API.
Here are the slides: http://www.slideshare.net/shl0m0/igt2009-the-open-cloud-computing-interface
The panel discussion touched on these three questions:
1) What is the driver for cloud standards - do businesses really want them? I said that the main driver for standardization is coming from the Government. Now that they need to buy cloud, and to define it before they can buy it, standards will be needed in order to fulfill Government purchasing requirements.
2) Why not just use the existing de-facto standards such as the EC2 API, as opposed to creating de-jure standards? I said that we need to focus on the vision: the vision is "open cloud" and a healthy ecosystem. The current de-facto standard is not compatible with that vision, since it is IP encumbered. Instead we need to push for an open standard.
3) Why don't you two guys (OCCI and Simple Cloud API) work together? I smiled, reached over, and shook the Simple Cloud API rep's hand.
