Working in an "offshore-like" model, in our project we heavily use Skype in order to keep in touch. That is we use the group chat feature which persists chats for monthes... though it seems to do it not on the server but rather on the client machines:)

My id there is andy.edmonds should people want to start up a conversation. If others on the mailing list want to share their details just reply to this thread.
Skype had the feature to create persistent public chats but doesn't seem to be supported any more. Guess we just have to wait for the good folks over at freenode.
