Dear all: Life Science Grid Research Group has two scheduled sessions at OGF this week. Both are in Discovery B on Thursday, Oct. 18. The first is at 9AM the second at 11AM. Besides an open discussion and group business, we will have two presentations: You can find slides in the LSG-RG section of gridforum.org John Boyle of the Institute for Systems Biology will talk in the first session Title: Requirements for a research enterprise for systems biology Abstract: In systems biology, and many other areas of research, there is a need for the interoperability of tools and data sources which were not originally designed to be ntegrated. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of systems biology, and its association with high throughput experimental platforms, there is an additional need to continually integrate new technologies. This problem is confounded by the fact that as scientists work in isolated groups, integration is rarely a consideration when building the required software tools. This talk will discuss a light-weight software architecture, based upon a common identity system and dynamically discovered interoperable services, used at the ISB through which scientists can both get access to and analyze the plethora of experimentally derived data. The shortcomings of this architecture will be discussed, as well as the need for the adoption of a new type of data infrastructure which is able to fulfill the requirements of the next generation of high throughput experiment technologies. [Apologies for multiple postings] -- Extended Deadlines: August 7th/17th -- RuleML-2007 Challenge: Rule Technology Showcase October, 25th, 2007 - Orlando, Florida http://2007.ruleml.org/index-Dateien/Page787.htm With its unique emphasis on the practical use of rule technologies in distributed Web-based environments, RuleML-2007 will feature a Challenge with a focus on rule applications and rule-based tools. The challenge offers participants a unique possibility to demonstrate their commercial or open source tools, use cases, and applications. Those demo paper submissions that are received by August 7th, and accepted, will participate in the Challenge and be published in the Springer LNCS Proceedings. Those that are received a little later, but by August 17th very latest, and accepted, will participate in the Challenge and may be considered for publication in the Proceedings. The Grid represents one way in which such an infrastructure can be developed and supported, providing seamless access to computational and data resources. This conference builds on several previous international workshops and provides a focus on all aspects related to the application of Grid technologies to the challenges facing the life science community. Topics The program committee welcomes the submission of original manuscripts addressing the problem of Grid Systems for Life Sciences. LSG-RG Life Science Grid at OGF20

Dear all: The Life Science Grid will have a number of speakers on some very interesting topics at OGF20 next week. Our meeting will be in Charter Suite 3 on Monday, May 7 from 9:00 to 10:30 and after the break again from 11:00 until 12:30. There will be talks on the Health e-Grid, the Share project, and Ontologies of Bioinformatics data. I will send the specific speakers and links to the slides tomorrow. With the completion of the sequencing of the human genome (and ever increasing numbers of other genomes), the opportunities of in-silico scientific research offer a new horizon of possibilities: from rapid targeted drug discovery, identification of genetic factors to disease causes and epidemiological studies through to complete biological understanding of complete organisms and tailored genetic treatments supporting e-Health solutions. The possibilities abound! Fundamental to the realization of this vision is the infrastructure needed to use and analyze the vast array of data sets associated with such research. These data sets are growing exponentially, often have radically different characteristics, are often maintained by completely different groups and bodies, and importantly are perpetually evolving. In this context, the development of an infrastructure that allows to access, use, and analyze such changing and growing amounts of data is both technically challenging, offers huge benefits to the scientific community and is potentially extremely viable commercially. Similarly, such in-silico research necessitates access to and usage of large scale high performance computing infrastructures for the wider life science research community. Here life science is italicized since it is essential that such infrastructures are made accessible to potentially non-computer savvy biologists and related research communities. The Grid represents one way in which such an infrastructure can be developed and supported, providing seamless access to computational and data resources. However Grid technologies and their associated standards are changing and evolving with moves towards web service-based service oriented architectures. How best to develop open Grid based systems allowing collaborative inter-organizational life science research to be undertaken without compromising the security of individual sites and their resources offers numerous challenges, especially in supporting flexible, scalable and secure collaborations. The purpose of the Life Science Grid workshop is to explore this problem space and gain a better understanding of how Grids, their architectures and associated technologies can be developed and applied to address these challenges. This is the third occurrence of the Life Science Grid workshop with previous events held in Kanazawa in 2004 and in Singapore in 2005. The Life Science Grid 2006 workshop which was held in Yokohama in 2006 received numerous high quality papers and poster presentations from the complete spectrum of the life science research domain and the best of these were selected for presentation at the workshop.
