In the data staging elements there is a creation flag that indicates whether to over-write or append. Often, one only wants to overwrite if the target and the source are different, for example if I am using a large data set that changes infrequently or several jobs on the same resource will use the "same" input file. Is there a way to do conditional stage in? I know the document says "More complex file transfers, for example, conditional transfers based on job termination status are out of scope. " But we're talking about a major performance optimization. Andrew

Final call on JSDL spec (draft 20)

All, Draft 20 is now on gridforge together with a slightly modified jsdl schema. (The jsdl-posix schema is unchanged.) This is a complete, cleaned up copy; no change tracking and with schemas as appendices. This is intended to be the draft we submit to the GGF Editor. We'd like to set *end-of-business (US West Coast) Friday, June 10* as the deadline for any last comments. This is simply an internal JSDL-WG deadline and you can, of course, send comments and questions to the list after that too. In fact we would like to encourage you to comment formally on the specification once it enters its 60-day public comment period. One Last Batch of Technical Queries

Hi everyone! We (Ali, Darren, Andreas and myself) have almost finished the final editoral actions to make the spec ready for public consumption, but a few minor issues remain. (My opinions on each are in parentheses.) Processor Architectures (Table 4-2 in 4.2.2.1) Should 'x86' really be called 'ia32'? (I don't really care.) Resources Element Definition (5.4.1.1) Do we need to say anything about what it means to satisfy the whole set of elements? (I think we just need to say that the Resources element is satisfied when all of its contained resource requirements are satisfied.) Do we need to say anything about what happens when you have both Total and Individual elements? (I think not...) Source and Target Element Pseudo-Schemas (5.5.6.5 and 5.5.8.5) Should the multiplicity of URI be "1" or "0-1"? Conceivably, people might want to stage to things expressed (using extensibility) as things other than URIs. (I'm inclined to say 0-1, but consistency between spec and schema is much more important.) The plan is to have a full finished version of the spec (to be revision 20) by the end-of-business on Monday, so any responses to the above points must be done *promptly*. Donal.

JSDL specification and schema snapshots (draft 19)

I have uploaded a new snapshot of the JSDL specification and schemas to gridforge. There are too many changes to mention. (Some were the result of side-discussions in parallel with the OGSA f2f. Thanks Chris, Darren, Donal, Michel and Steve.) The MS word file is change tracked. The pdf file is 'clean' and is intended for submission to meet the GGF14 deadline. We'll be moving to clean up and hopefully submit to the GGF Editor over the next 1-2 weeks. DataStaging concerns

Hi all, Forgive me if I'm reiterating on a topic. I've only be reading up on JSDL since yesterday. I have a few concerns about the DataStaging section. Primarily, I'm wondering if it really makes sense to have it as part of the core schema. I think it would be better to have extensions like POSIXApplication for more specific DRM configurations. Here are some of my thoughts: 1) There's still controversy over whether staging should or should not be integrated into a DRM. As far as I can tell, for example, the BES doesn't have any plans to implement staging. DRMMA makes this optional. If BES ends up using JSDL, wouldn't this be a violation of the spec which requires each element to be supported in some way? 2) There's no distinction between a stage-in or stage-out flavor of the staging directives. I guess it's up to the service to decipher this so that it can perform the staging at the appropriate point in the life cycle. 3) I don't particularly like that the DataStaging sections include an option to remove the file at the end of the job. If I'm staging out data then this doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'd much prefer a separate section which explicitly lists all the files that are to be removed from the submission machine after the job has been completed. This would also cover the case of data that is created rather than staged in but still needs to be removed after job completion. 4) Based on the current GRAM incarnation, it would be nice to let RFT's transfer request description extend a base staging schema and then use that in the JSDL document rather than adding a bunch of extensions to DataStaging. This is similar to how I'd want to go about using POSIXApplication. Thanks in advance for any responses... Peter
