Dear colleagues, The dsa-research group (http://dsa-research.org) is pleased to announce that a new Technology Preview (TP2) of the OpenNEbula (ONE) Virtual Infrastructure Engine (http://www.OpenNEbula.org) is available for download under the terms of the Apache License, Version 2.0. ONE enables the dynamic deployment and re-allocation of virtual machines on a pool of physical resources, so extending the benefits of existing virtualization platforms from a single physical resource to a pool of resources, decoupling the server not only from the physical infrastructure but also from the physical location. ONE Technology Preview 2 extends the functionality for management of both physical resources and virtual machines, and provides resources for developers, making public the Trac web interface (http://trac.opennebula.org ). Hi all, for OGF23 in Barcelona the RESERVOIR presentations are scheduled now: Tuesday, June 3 3:45 pm - 5:15 pmRESERVOIR Project (90 mins) The goal of the RESERVOIR project is to advance the competitiveness of the EU economy by introducing a powerful ICT infrastructure for reliable and effective delivery of services as utilities, in a manner analogous to electricity and telephony. This infrastructure will support the setup and deployment of services on demand, at competitive costs, across disparate administrative domains, ensuring quality of service. In doing so, RESERVOIR will lay a foundation for a service-based European online economy, where services - which have become critical to our business environment - will be transparently, scalable and flexibly provisioned and managed for the benefit of businesses and citizens. The prime deliverable of the project will be an architecture and a reference implementation of a service-oriented infrastructure (SOI), which ? building on open standards and new technologies ? will provide a dependable framework for delivering services as utilities. We will demonstrate how this infrastructure supports the deployment and management of complex service scenarios that are not otherwise supported by today?s technology. We aim to achieve significant quantifiable improvements in service delivery productivity, quality, availability and cost. >From a scientific standpoint, our work will contribute to the state-of-the-art by: ? Significantly advancing virtualisation and grid technologies and deeply integrating them, thereby creating a basis for the next generation SOI, where services and their associated resources are effectively delivered ?without boundaries? of geography and the underlying system configuration. ? Developing service management technology capable of exploiting the strengths and addressing the challenges presented by our infrastructure. For example, this will include monitoring service execution and resource utilization, and triggering service relocation and resource reallocation decisions as needed to ensure compliance with Service Level Agreements across disparate domains. Dear colleagues, The dsa-research group (author of the widely used Globus GridWay Metascheduler) has released a Technology Preview of the OpenNEbula (ONE) Virtual Infrastructure Engine. OpenNEbula transforms a physical cluster into a flexible virtual infrastructure which dynamically adapts to the changing demands of a service workload. Hi all, many of you have heard or are even involved in the RESERVOIR initiative. RESERVOIR - Resources and Services Virtualization without Barriers - is a European Community funded project. You can see an announcement and further description here: http://www.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/23448.wss Or here: http://www.gridtoday.com/grid/2106993.html RESERVOIR activities and use cases There are multiple activity streams / tasks: - Project management - Overall architecture (led by IBM) - Virtual infrastructure (led by IBM) - Virtual environment management (led by Universidad Complutense de Madrid) - Service management (led by Telefonica) - etc. The project is based on real scenarios and use cases: - SAP business application - Telco application - e-Government - Utility computing - etc. How is this related to OGF? OGF is one of the RESERVOIR partners. It takes an advisory role w.r.t. to standardization. On OGF23 in Barcelona there will be a dedicated session for RESERVOIR. Leading researcher from IBM Haifa will present the objectives and activities. How is this related to gridvirt WG? The SAP use case, in particular, covers the use cases and scenarios we have described so far. Surely, all the RESERVOIR scenarios together will cover a much broader view and many more aspects. I expect that this project will bring virtualization and grid a big step forward. Much further than what our small work group could achieve. Open Nebula Virtual Infrastructure Engine

Good day, I'm Luis Gonzalez, member of the DSA Research Group (dsa-research.org) at Universidad Complutense in Madrid which is developing the Open Nebula Virtual Infrastructure Engine (former Gridhypervisor). Currently we are part of the Reservoir European project, which is related to Virtualization and Grid, and so we have been following closely the use case draft and proposed API published on the gridforge project of this WG and other important standards like DMTF's proposals. In particular, we are working on the implementation of a VM manager (OpenNebula based) on top of a physical infrastructure (like clusters) that will manage the full life cycle of the VM from definition to execution and destruction, including things like scheduling of VMs according to some rules or policies based on host statistics (load-balancing, idle time...) and also provide capabilities like snapshotting, migration, live migration, deployment, etc. and creation of VM with their corresponding disk images in an image repository. One of our goals in the context of the RESERVOIR project is to define an open specification of an API for the management of VMs, so being the OpeNebula API an open-source reference implementation. We are wondering if the API proposed in the WG draft has a similar aim. The document "Grid and Virtualization - Use Cases" has been revised and extended by me. Please see http://forge.gridforum.org/sf/go/doc14311. Now it describes the model we assume for our work. This is basically the textual explanation of the slides presented on last OGF and the reasoning behind these assumptions. The runtime use cases (Resize System and Live Migration) have been refined. Furthermore, a first attempt has been taken to specifiy a programming interface between the Grid management entities and the virtualization platform manager. Your comments are highly appreciated.
