GGF NOMCOM 2006 Call for Volunteers The GGF Nominations Committee 2006 needs your help! We are looking for volunteers for NomCom 2006, the GGF nominating committee that is responsible for recommending candidates to fill open positions on the Grid Forum Steering Group (GFSG). Typically, one third of the GFSG is selected each year. This year we expect to have to fill 12 positions, although this can change due to the creation or elimination of positions by the GFSG, or by resignations, transfers, etc. The provisional list of positions to be filled this year is: VC Standards AD Architecture AD Data AD Infrastructure AD Management AD Security AD Industry Applications AD Major Grid Projects AD Grid Operations AD Community Affairs AD Events AD Finance The nominating process is modelled after IETF RFC 3777, "IAB and IESG Selection, Confirmation, and Recall Process: Operation of the Nominating and Recall Committees". IETF RFC 3777 supersedes IETF RFC 2727 which the GGF GFSG adopted, with minor revisions, in 2003. The first phase in the NonCom process is to establish this year's nominating committee; this is being done by this year's NomCom Chair, Sven van den Berghe, along with Dietmar Erwin, past Chair, and Ramin Yahyapour, GFSG liaison. To qualify for the NomCom, a volunteer must have attended 2 of the last 4 GGF meetings. NomCom members are barred from nomination to the GFSG during the year they serve, even if they later resign. Responsibilities and expected time commitment are outlined below (see #2 below), as are the confidentiality needs (see #3 below). Community members who feel they meet these requirements and are interested in helping are encouraged to volunteer. Please e-mail your name, affiliation, telephone number(s), and email address to Sven van den Berghe, Sven.vandenBerghe@uk.fujitsu.com, not later than Saturday November 26, 2005 (midnight UTC). Please put "NomCom volunteer" in the subject line. Volunteering for the NomCom is a way in which you can serve the GGF community. We encourage you to help! Best regards, Sven van den Berghe, Chair (non-voting member) Dietmar Erwin, past Chair (non-voting member) Ramin Yahyapour, GFSG liaison (non-voting member) NOMCOM Details 1. Nominating Committee Selection Process ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The call for volunteers will be open for at least 30 days. To qualify as a volunteer, a person must have attended 2 of the last 4 GGF meetings. Note that this deviates from the 3 out of 5 rule in RFC3777. For the NomCom to work as it should, the pool of volunteers from which members are chosen must be as large as possible. The more people who volunteer, the better the chance of obtaining a random yet representative cross section of the GGF population. Once the call for volunteers closes, the list of volunteers will be posted to http://www.ggf.org/nomcom/. The GGF secretariat will then verify the eligibility of each volunteer. The results of the selection will be announced the week of December 13, 2005. Ten (10) NomCom voting members will be chosen at random from the pool of volunteers in accordance with RFC 2777, "Publicly Verifiable Nomcom Random Selection". Two sources of randomness will be used: 1) The runs scored by the batsmen during the 3rd One Day International between New Zealand and Australia played on Saturday 10 December 2005 (as published on www.cricinfo.com) 2) The results of the drawing of UK National Lottery on Saturday 10 December 2005("Lotto" draw number 1040, all 7 balls, results available at www.national-lottery.co.uk) If an insufficient number of people volunteer before November 26th, an extension will be announced and new "sources of randomness" will be posted to the NomCom site. 2. Time Commitment and Responsibilities of NomCom Members ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - A volunteer should be able to commit 2-3 hours per week for at most 8 months (the process will start in January 2006 with the aim of completion by the start of September 2006). The task involves the following activities: - Read candidate statements - Participate in a regular conference call (about 1 hour long, initially fortnightly, rising to weekly at the end of the selection process) - Attend GGF meetings held during selection process. - Conduct interviews with candidates (telephone and face to face) - Speak to GGF participants about potential candidates, the job requirements or the process. 3. Confidentiality ----------------------------------------------------------------------- All NomCom deliberations and supporting information that relates to specific nominees, candidates, and confirmed candidates is confidential. The NomCom members will be exposed to confidential information as a result of their deliberations, their interactions with those they consult, and from those who provide requested supporting information. All members are expected to handle this information in a manner consistent with its sensitivity.
