Dear GLUE WG members, OGF prefers publication of OGF schema to its hosted areas. THis allows us to guarantee access to these shoudl tehre be need for any updates. If schema get distributed to the four winds, we may have trouble making any needed updates int eh event of future revisions. We understand the popularity and usefulness of github. It is worth noting that this is a private company, and despite its popularity, future access is not guaranteed. As an alternative to group-hosted schema pages, we have taken the first steps to create an OGF “GitHub Organizational Pages” central resource for the organization at the link below. https://github.com/OpenGridForum This gives us the best of both worlds: the ability to have OGF groups host material on github with organization in teams, and the ability to keep and pass on control to OGF groups in the future as needed. We have just created these a few months ago. If you are willing to try this out, Andre can set up a team for you with all of the current OGF GLUE team members and you can transfer your existing resources over there as needed. You should have the same level of control over them that you enjoy now. We are also working on having OGF Redmine logins work using github accounts, and in the future, being able to sync repository contents between the OGF-hosted git repositories and those hosted by the GitHub commercial (but generally free) resources on github. Andre, please comment on any of this if I have gotten it wrong. Meanwhile, JP, Florido, and the group, please comment positibely or negatively on the above scheme. In summary, I would prefer to see the schemas.ogf.org used as the reference in the document, and if necessary or useful for some reason, we can synchronize and make use of GitHub resources also; but for organizational long-term coordination and access reasons, would prefer to see these under OGF’s administrative controls. Hi Alan, To be honest, I don't understand your comments; we always placed the final schemas on schemas.ogf.org; We can use it as a reference in the realisation document even though is weird, because the document exists before the file in schemas.ogf.org. Same comment for the LDAP schema: it cannot contain the schemas.ogf.org url before we have something at that URL... As you understand, managing code with a wiki or through heavily burocratical procedures is not really exciting -- well it's not even practically possible :D I I guess we used github as any other thing one could use to share source code. Without some form of versioning collaborative coding is useless in my opinion. If OGF suggests us an alternative we will follow it. If the page you sent us -- an OGF dedicated area in github -- is the suggested way to go, we can go that way no problem. I guess is just a matter of pulling the repos into the OGF areas. If the presence of the github URL in the LDAP schema bothers you, I can remove any reference to github from it and keep the redmine one; for me it makes no difference whatsoever. Especially because, at least for the case of LDAP, the schema is packaged and distributed elsewhere by the various linux distributions and their package maintainers, who sadly might not care about github or schemas.ogf.org anyway. But it all depends which URL we ask them to refer to. I can add schemas.org.org somewhere in the schema that is on github as a reference to the last official schema, but github is code in development, so pointing to schemas.ogf.org simply does not make sense to me. That host IMHO should contain only the stuff officially approved by the group and not the work in progress -- that is exactly what is currently doing! Hi Florido, You will find that we are very quick to install or update schemas on schemas.org.org in response to a request from the group. This is about as non-bureaucratic as we can make it. The issue only comes up for schema links that are published in OGF documents. there should always be a schema at the location referred to in the publication. Part of our review process for publishing new OGF documents is to make sure that any schemas referred to in the document are properly in place. As far as using other locations for development, testing or convenience, of course we leave that to the group. There is nothing to prevent an individual implementation from using closes or other duplicates or even variations on the officially published schemas — the OGF process explicitly allows this, as it does also for clones or derivative works that make use of OGF published document information. The main points are that (a) Schemas referred to in OGF documents as normative for a specification should always be available for any published document, and (b) we would prefer that the location of the schemas be under OGF control, primarily to ensure access and continued availability for the OGF community, even if individual people leading or within the groups move on. Regarding this, it seems pretty obvious to me that OGF published documents should only reference locations on the net that are more or less permanent and under the control of OGF. It’s an open community, however, and I am certainly open to other interpretations! Alan
