I reviewed section 23. The last paragraph of 23.3 is inconsistent with the rest of the section. Suggested revised wording: The result of evaluating the expression must be a single atomic value of the type expected by the context, and it is a schema definition error otherwise. Some XPath expressions naturally return a sequence of values, and in this case it is also schema definition error if an expression returns a sequence containing more than one item. On to your examples (and assuming separatorPosition is 'infix')... You are right about the first (endOfParent) example being odd. This example would work fine if the lengthKind was 'delimited'. Remember that the 'explicit' length of the parent element creates a box which scopes the delimited behaviour. The second (delimited) works fine. endOfParent and delimited behave almost identically most of the time. When the element is an array, this looks to be one of the differences. I am thinking that endOfParent should not be allowed when maxOccurs > 1. However, one can model data containing character code U+0000 in the content as an array of strings with NUL termination. That is, we split the string on the NUL characters so as to avoid putting them in the infoset. So I tried to do this and ran into issues. E.g., if data contains a string of length 80, but inside it the character code 0 can appear, then this could be modeled as: <element name="stringsWithNul" dfdl:lengthKind="fixed" dfdl:length="80"> <sequence dfdl:separator="%x0000;"> <element name="substring" type="string" maxOccurs="80" dfdl:lengthKind="endOfParent" />  </sequence> </element> Problem: is that use of endOfParent length kind right? It's the last thing in the group, but the same element decl also describes the prior elements. If there are no NULs in the string, then endOfParent is exactly what you want. There will be only one substring, it will have all 80 characters. But if there are NULs in the middle, then you want the earlier array elements to be delimited by the sequence's separators, and only the last element to be delimited by endOfParent. This semantics where the parent is providing the constraints on length, but sometimes its separator, just for the last thing it's endOfParent, is not something we can express I believe. I was actually even unclear on this one: If the data 'string' has a terminator of ! then perhaps: <element name="stringsWithNul" dfdl:lengthKind="delimited" dfdl:terminator="!"> <sequence dfdl:separator="%x0000;"> <element name="substring" type="string" maxOccurs="unbounded" dfdl:lengthKind="delimited"/>  </sequence> </element> Is the array element delimited? Mike I don't think it's strictly necessary to specify that we will try the longest granularity first, because we can tell from the length of the input data, together with the presence/absence of a '.' (fractional second separator), which of the granularities we should attempt to parse the input data against. Remember that by the time the parser tries to process the date/time, it will already have extracted the text using lengthKind and done any trimming. Granularity Length YYYY 4 YYYY-MM 7 YYYY-MM-DD 10 YYYY-MM-DDThh:mmTZD 17 or 22 YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ssTZD 20 or 25 YYYY-MM-DDThh:mm:ss.sTZD 22 or more but input data will contain '.' (TZD can be Z or +hh:mm or -hh:mm) Similarly for xs:time we would have, Granularity Length hh:mmTZD 6 or 11 hh:mm:ssTZD 9 or 14 hh:mm:ss.sTZD 11 or more but input data will contain '.' Any other length of input data, or invalid data for the granularity matched, would be a processing error. When parsing, the data must match one of the granularities. When unparsing, the fullest granularity is used. xs:date. When parsing, the data must match one of the date-only granularities. When unparsing, the fullest date-only granularity is used. 'IU' is permitted for xs:date but the 'U' is effectively ignored as there is no time zone in the date-only granularities. xs:time. When parsing, the data must match only the time components of one of the granularities that contains time components. When unparsing, the time components of the fullest granularity are used. The literal 'T' character is not expected in the data when parsing and is not output when unparsing. The number of fractional second digits supported is implementation dependent but must be at least one. For a granularity that omits components, when parsing the values for the omitted components are supplied from the Unix epoch 1970-01-01T00:00:00.000 . Alternatives: As above but don't support the first two granularities ('Year', 'Year and month') on the grounds that they are really matching xs:gYear and xs:gYearMonth. Action 153 proposal Allow dfdl:calendarTimezone to be either UTC offset format or Olson format, as per option (a) above. Olson is the most widely-used naming convention for time zones. Option (b) above refers to 5 character UN LOCODE codes (where possible) which identify locations and map to Olson time zones. However they are not well known and therefore less usable. For representing 'not specified' time zone stick with the current errata (2.50) and use empty string. It seems more obvious than "Etc/Unknown" which is not defined in the Olson database, so would have to be handled as a special case. When unparsing and dfdl:calendarPattern contains a formatting symbol for time zone (zzz, Z, VVVV etc) and the infoset value does not contain a time zone, it is a processing error. This matches the behaviour on parsing when the data does not contain a time zone but the pattern does. Spec should be clear on this. When dfdl:calendarObserveDST is set to 'yes', it only makes sense if dfdl: calendarTimeZone is an Olson time zone. If it is a UTC offset then it should be a schema definition error if dfdl:calendarObserveDST is 'yes'. Here's some proposed errata language: *The following properties descriptions are amended to include this stipulation: When a DFDL Expression is used, it may not produce empty string.
