Well it had to happen eventually... I have reached the age where retirement from my active technical career makes sense. As of Dec 31, 2025 I am retired from my job at Owl Cyber Defense where I have been paid for nearly 15 years to work on DFDL and Daffodil. With that comes a reduction of my time to work on the DFDL workgroup. I did a small flurry of spec changes recently to get all the current corrections and errata into the document and set it up for getting cross-ref/hyperlinks fixed, and a clickable property index, as those are badly needed. I will still be on the DFDL mailing list but I will not be participating as actively, but I can remain acting co-chair until such time as someone else wants to step into the role of chair/co-chair. OGF DFDL: What Other Materials needed for Updated submission of DFDL to ISO

Alan, When DFDL was first submitted as a PAS standard to ISO, besides the OGF DFDL document itself, I believe there was additional material also that was part of making up the overall submission package. I'm a bit unclear on what materials are part of OGF being accepted as a PAS submitter, and where that material ends, versus which materials accompanied the specific PAS submission of DFDL. I.e., which materials would also need to be updated if a revised DFDL version were submitted. Can you advise on what these additional documents would be to make up a complete submission "package"? An update to DFDL is quite possibly in the works, not imminently, but in a year or so, but I am retiring at the end of 2025 so will be less active going forward. I want to set the stage on what all is involved in creating an updated DFDL spec., beyond just the spec itself, for those still working on it. Changing some issues from DFDL v2.0 to "Research Topic" label

I claim these items are really open-ended research things. Not ready to be considered for specification. I propose relabeling them by removing the DFDL v2.0 label, and adding a "Research Topic" label. - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/70 (non-XSD syntax – escape from XML) - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/63 (pathological DFDL parser behavior) - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/13 (variable or wildcard path step) - The primary feature of ESA’s DFDL4Space implementation - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/40 (ICU DecimalFormat class updates) - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/27 (embedded XML and JSON in data) - Daffodil attempted this feature, but it’s definitely wrong. Must be part of parsing to verify the XML/JSON are well-formed. We did have a real use case for this.). - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/23 (improvements where DFDL v1.0 spec is weak, need better examples, improved discussion text) - https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/issues/20 (bidirectional text) - Requires a R-to-L languages expert to specify this. DFDL working rev 1.2.0 - ISO Formatted but still "OGF content" version of Spec

This took a few hours, but worked. See: https://github.com/OpenGridForum/DFDL/blob/master/docs/draft-gwdrp-dfdl-v1.… There are also PDF and HTML versions of the same in the same folder. There's hidden text in the MS-Word ".docx" file explaining a few aspects of things. That hidden text doesn't show in the PDF nor HTML versions. This is an "OGF" document in that it has all the OGF specified sections, change history page, etc. They just use different fonts, A4 pages, and some OGF backmatter sections are relocated to the front matter to facilitate dual maintenance of an OGF-track and ISO-PAS submission flavor of this document. This is setup so making a new ISO submission from this requires changing the page headings/footings (while preserving their size so page breaks don't change), and replacing the front matter pages. Note: there are some ISO formatting things I chose not to do. One is changing all table captions to be at the top of the table. FYI: ASN.1 Encoding Control Notation (ECN) compared to DFDL

ASN.1 ECN has been an ISO standard thing for a while. ECN lets you add representation information to the ASN.1 schema, which sounds roughly DFDL-like. So now with DFDL being an ISO standard the obvious thing arises to compare/contrast them. So I did a quick exercise in that direction. An AI (with my help) created an equivalent ASN.1 Schema + ECN from the FakeTDL format specification text *document *on github. (FakeTDL is a small example of a fictitious military tactical data link on github DFDLSchemas) This PR exhibits that ASN.1 and ECN code and does some comparison. They’re not particularly equivalent – some limitations of ECN become apparent even in this small example. https://github.com/DFDLSchemas/faketdl/pull/12/files This is the chatGPT5 session I used to create the example (fairly long) https://chatgpt.com/share/68dd112a-3140-800f-ab7c-c0d043c0460a I asked it a bunch more things about ASN.1 ECN that go beyond just this example. By the end of this it was speculating too much, and confusing some concepts, but overall this was quite useful.
