Rr "Two programmers pleaded guilty to copyright charges in association with two illegal streaming services, including one site that had more content than Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, according to the Department of Justice. Darryl Julius Polo, 36, pleaded guilty last week to running Las Vegas–based streaming site iStreamItAll as well as working on the illegal streaming website Jetflicks, the Justice Department announced Friday. He also pleaded guilty to money laundering, according to federal prosecutors. Luis Angel Villarino, 40, pleaded guilty in a separate trial on Friday to working as a computer programmer on Jetflicks. Polo said he reproduced tens of thousands of copyrighted television episodes and movies without authorization and streamed and distributed the programs to thousands of paid subscribers throughout the U.S., prosecutors said. Polo would send out emails to iStreamItAll subscribers urging them to cancel subscriptions to licensed sites, highlighting the catalog of 118,479 TV episodes and 10,980 movies, according to the Justice Department. The illegal website had more content than licensed streaming services Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and Amazon Prime, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said Polo would use “sophisticated computer programming” to search global pirate sites for new illegal content. Polo and Villarino both pleaded guilty to also working separately as computer programmers at Jetflicks, another subscription-based illegal streaming site based out of Las Vegas. This is why the strength of a cipher is measured in "polynomial time" or "exponential time." Quality time, sweetheart. - Quantum time is a theory at this point. It is a lame conjecture. Do not trust theories and conjectures. Trust quality time. - Obscurity is a time buffer. Until the obscure is unobscured, time is working effortlessly against the effort of attack. (!blasphemy!) - Ciphertext, keys, and digests are like toothpase: whiten, whiten, whiten. Use separate whitening vectors for all. - Industry standard crypto is always insufficient for dangerous messages. There must be a time-to-generate bottleneck. - One-time pad injects a time bottleneck approaching functional infinity. - Industry standard crypto gets bugged and broken regularly. Using it can produce a secure, self-signed death warrant. - The longer a decipherment key takes to generate the more secure the ciphertext will be. But who signs their paychecks? Is it the same Sam who signs NSA paychecks? - Does the academic who pumps a certain unobscure cryptosystem have a life insurance policy on you? Is your cryptography advisor invested in noose stocks? - Will the pumpers of a certain cryptosystem support your family when you are doxed or dead or disappeared? - Provable security of a dangerous cryptosystem does not make it safe or secure. It must also be deeply obscured from view. - Web site crypto keys are vouched for by state-licensed actors. Need we say more? Dangerous crypto should also be obscured by quality time. - Generally the more time you take to secure your communications the more time your adversary needs to attack. - Why settle for 2 ^ 256 when 2 ^ 256 million is a clear winner? - Why settle for one algorithm when you can cascade many? - Envelope Superencryption of many algorithms is not necessarily limited to strength of its weakest algorithm. (!blasphemy!) - Basket encryption and stacking pancakes: If 16 superencryptions are used with 16 different algorithms then the attacker must spend time to correctly guess each algorithm in the correct order with the correct keys or breaks. 16 pow 16 = 18446744073709551616 combinations, before we've even addressed possible keys. If your basket of available algorithms is larger than 16, this time injection can get unwieldy for attackers, even if the attacker has a quantum 'flux capacitor.' - When your life or liberty is at stake, to hell with efficiency. Churn, baby, churn! - Peer review and public availability of a cryptosystem are not magic guarantees that weaknesses or flaws will be found. The links between the nodes are lines of support arising not from a command structure, but from a community of interest, shared objectives and interlocking memberships. Individual groups do not so much set the agenda or run the show as act within their own sphere of influence or speciality, occasionally supporting actions taken by others. Many are isolated and have little impact outside their own country, and here the Cercle came into its own as a group with a world-wide agenda, connecting and, to some extent, coordinating the activities of groups in many different countries. The Cercle complex stands almost alone as an active international network linking intelligence veterans and their media manipulators to top right-wing politicians. As to its significance, one can do no better than to quote Ramsay and Dorril: "One of the conclusions to be drawn from this essay is about networks. One common response to the delineation of a network is to say, 'Yes, all that is interesting, but where is the actual transmission of power?' To which we would argue - and this is the only claim we make which might be called theoretical - that the network is the power. A network of people who are, elsewhere, powerful, is per se a powerful network." Through its network of private-sector spies and their disinformation outlets, the Cercle complex could promote or denigrate public figures not only in their own country, but throughout Europe and America. Its activities during the Cold War - covert funding, black propaganda, smear campaigns and, at least, connections to planned coups d'état - were those of any intelligence agency, and, in many ways, that is what the Cercle complex has been: the rogue agents of the international Right.

The IQNets network is a friend to friend network. IQNets provides for links to, and routes through, unknown peers/nodes (ala bittorrent). IQNets is built on certain principles such as quid pro quo. For example, since primary network entry is via friends, friends are giving or sharing bandwidth between themselves. IQNets incentivizes sharing ([private request from Bill to John] "yo John, can you stay online for 20 minutes, I want to finish downloading last year's GoT.") Such requests may be broadcast to your group of friends, and possibly their friends, possibly anonymously (but verifiably as belonging to one of your friends if you previously established the appropriate cryptographic comms ring/net; Getting more friend nodes results in greater maximum up/download capacity for any one node at a time (given typically bursty nature of impatient youtube watchers and movie downloaders), thus motivating meat space connections. also, friends don't dominate friend's internet connections - friends have a far greater tendency/incentive, to play nice with one another, than completely anonymous "fly by night" contacts. Classes of nodes (from a node's perspective): - direct friend nodes with a meat space asserted trust level, which may be anywhere on the trust axis - both above and below zero - indirect "friend of friend" nodes and so on - "unknown" nodes, once you get beyond friends of friends of friends I guess - there is also every reason to utilize a bittorrent style DHT to make contact with "genuinely 'unknown' nodes" - DHT bootstrapping? also, read up on PEX Classes of locality: - legal jurisdiction locality - relevant magnitude is most likely "nation" or "state" - ISP locality - other IQNets users within my ISP - "roaming" IPv6 addresses? Is this a thing yet? - If this exists, it could be called dynamic network locality, and is probably important and useful to know about. - Certainly seizing dynamic connectivity by the horns is going to be useful for maximizing "ad hoc p2p wireless" within a crowd of people. Classes of quid pro quo: - network connectivity - storage/ content caching resources (design TODO) Storage metrics, just as with network metrics, are also maintained in order to establish fairness - quid pro quo. At its most basic, the internet is about making available, and downloading, content of one form or another, be it tweets, web pages, movies or phone calls; iow, the internet is a content distribution network. The internet as it was conceived has core design principles which are desirable for robustness and censorship resistance, such as peer to peer communications and flexible routing. In practice, the internet today falls somewhat short of its founding ideals due primarily to our governments (military) stalking us and snooping on us, and corporations (profit at all costs) interests. A bittorrent like protocol shall form the fundament of IQNets, with configurable settings which would impact possible levels of privacy and anonymity. In other words, the goal is high speed and relatively efficient network utilization for arbitrary, and arbitrarily large, content distribution, whilst maintaining configurable levels of (at least partially achievable) privacy and anonymity. I.e. "large file distribution" is a first class citizen in the IQNets network. With a shout out to cypherpunk Juan for suggesting the idea. IQNets - making the impossible possible. Framed in the terms of our fundamental human rights, IQNets reclaims for all end user "nodes", the role of primary authority; echos of GNS (GNU Name Server) design principles. On gaming reputation: - nodes self declare intentions or expectations such as bandwidth, uptime/ connectivity, the node's estimated/assumed monthly quota, suitable times for use of bandwidth (peak vs off peak), and more. - metrics are empirically measured of course and stored so that sane and safe routing and connection decisions can be made - friends share metrics (at least, on request) - nodes may collude to proclaim "great metrics" amongst themselves, which they broadcast to other nodes who ask, but ultimately, the empirical evidence that I observe, is the primary metrics data of relevance, followed by that shared with me by my 'friends', and finally, that which other nodes self declare

I have now made the available archives from 1992-2013 available via Mailman, and placed copies of the available mbox files within. Suggestions welcome. -------- Processing of Cypherpunks Archives Available archives of the Cypherpunks email list are incomplete, and in fact there is evidence they have been tampered with and/or redacted over the years. This project was to do some basic clean-up of available archives, which are in mbox format, so that they could be ingested and be viewed within Mailman. The archives contain many poorly formed messages, and Mailman defaults to the current date (December 2019, at the time of this writing) when it encounters a problem with the date. So, a separate 'cypherpunks-legacy' list was deployed to make the archives available without overlapping with the current active 'cypherpunks' list, which goes back to July 20 2013. Otherwise, the legacy archive messages would have been peppered into the current archives, in ways that would be difficult to predict or undo. There were especially many anomalies from the larger source, spanning 1999-2015. In addition to many poorly formed messages (i.e., messages that, in one way or another, could not be cleanly ingested with the Mailman 'arch') comment, there were invalid dates, and lines that had an errant "From " at the start. To ready the sources for ingestion to Mailman two automated tools were utilized, followed by some ad hoc edits and changes: 1. 'sortmbox.py' uses a Python library to put messages in by-date order. This proved to be less confusing to Mailman (i.e., fewer messages were inserted to the current month). 2. 'cleanarch' (/var/lib/mailman/bin/cleanarch) is part of the Mailman package. It fixes errant "From " entries at the start of lines. 3. I also used 'sed' to replace invalid dates with valid ones that were in the same ballpark day+time as the message. I found these either when 'arch' complained (such as for dates before the Unix epoch), or when Mailman was showing messages in the future: 's/ 0101 / 1999 /' | sed 's/ 0102 / 1999 /' 's/Thu Dec 31 22:40:39 1903/Thu Jul 5 22:40:39 2018/g' 's/Jan 1904/Jul 2018/' 's/Date: Sun, 1 Apr 2029 03:07:16 +0200/Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 15:59:46 -0800/' 's/Date: Fri, 3457 Jan 4 61400:2064:61300 +0200/Wed May 29 15:00:02 2013/' There might have been a few other small edits made within the files, which I didn't record, simply to help Mailman to do a better job of creating browsable archives. 4. I then concatenated all the mbox files (one each for 1992-1998, plus one larger file for 1999-2015), and reran sortmbox.py and cleanarch. 5. I edited the resulting file to remove everything after the new list archives were set up, on July 20 2013. To do the work above, I created a temporary Mailman list, and repeatedly used the 'arch' command to ingest the archives and fix problems. This was an iterative process. Once 'arch' was giving sane output, I created a new Mailman list, 'cypherpunks-legacy.' I put the single unified + fixed mbox file where Mailman tools would find it: /var/lib/mailman/archives/public/cypherpunks-legacy.mbox/cypherpunks-legacy.mbox At this point, I could use the Mailman to slurp the mbox files in, and create the browsable structure. The 'arch' command: /var/lib/mailman/bin/arch --wipe cypherpunks-legacy This served to populate the list archives, which are browsable here: https://lists.cpunks.org/pipermail/cypherpunks-legacy The single large mbox file resulting from the steps above is linked at the top of the Archives page. Here is a direct link: https://lists.cpunks.org/pipermail/cypherpunks-legacy.mbox/cypherpunks-lega… (615MB, containing approximately 180149 messages) Please be aware that Mailman's placement of messages by author, date, subject and thread - including the correct by-month folder - is not perfect. Messages sometimes end up in the wrong place, and sometimes threads are split across different years. Also note that these mbox files did not include attachments. The current Mailman archive does include attachments, but this legacy archive does not. It seems they were not included with the archive input sources (though it's possible some messages have MIME-encoded attachments within them). Anyone interested in doing a serious dig into the archive should also consult the original mbox files. These can be ingested into any capable email client program, and viewed as separate messages. They may be sorted and searched, just like any other email folder. The same sorts of issues as those described above will likely be evident in any email client, and clients will even show a different total number of messages. The types of sorting, editing, and displaying described above would have somewhat different results, if a different toolset is used. An investigation by Gizmodo has revealed that it's possible to obtain the locations of Ring doorbell cameras from post on Amazon's Neighbors app. Amazon has continuously deflected criticism and claimed it is dedicated to user privacy. The company insisted Ring users have a "choice in what information, if any, they share with law enforcement." It turns not only can law enforcement access the exact location of users, but anyone, anywhere can find out where users live. Gizmodo was able to locate geographic coordinates for more than 20,000 camera. Some of the coordinates placed you directly in front of the Ring device, while other coordinates were a couple hundred feet yet identifiers from posted videos made it easy to locate the user's home. "People have been misled into buying these devices because Amazon tells them it will keep their family safe. But it's a lie. Amazon's surveillance network puts us all in danger," said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future. "Any bystander caught by a Ring device could be located using the geographic coordinates found. People can be tracked going into buildings, like clinics, for private appointments. Children captured on video could be located by people with malicious intentions. The possibilities are endless. Amazon has failed to put any protections in place. Now, we're all vulnerable to the consequences of their dragnet. We need Congress to investigate, and hold Amazon accountable for these dangers."

The attack, which researchers have named Plundervolt, exploits the interface through which an operating system can control an Intel processor's voltage and frequency -- the same interface that allows gamers to overclock their CPUs. Academics say they discovered that by tinkering with the amount of voltage and frequency a CPU receives, they can alter bits inside SGX to cause errors that can be exploited at a later point after the data has left the security of the SGX enclave. They say Plundervolt can be used to recover encryption keys or introduce bugs in previously secure software. Intel desktop, server, and mobile CPUs are impacted. A full list of vulnerable CPUs is available here. Intel has also released microcode (CPU firmware) and BIOS updates today that address the Plundervolt attack [by allowing users to disable the energy management interface at the source of the attack, if not needed]. Proof-of-concept code for reproducing attacks will be released on GitHub.

A few month before his arrest, he registered a Twitter handle with a throwaway SIM card. Those are being usually sold by "grannies" in Chinese 2nd tier cities who peddle things like fake tax receipts, anonymous train tickets and such. China either hacked Twitter, or had somebody bribed there, and they got the number. They then tracked down the granny who sold him the SIM card, and went on and checking every person door to door in that small town. Then, they found him. He got 5 years prison, and 4 years of laogai (gulag) Basically Twitter got pwned big time, and now denies it because GDPR will ruin them if breach is proven. Here is what Doubi's online followers figured: State security got all phone numbers used for Twitter phone verification up to May 2019 and possibly till July. Twitter haphazardly closed the breach in complete secrecy. API hole explanation is excluded as people with 100% private accs got police visits. People with foreign SIM cards also got into trouble. So the explanation that China compromised Twitter's SMS providers is also excluded, as its improbable that they did it in 4+ countries. 2016 breach is also out of question. The only explanation is that they got hold on a big piece of their user DB, or, worse, they have an active infiltrator in Twitter, or Twitter voluntarily cooperated. "

Every round trip between 2 peer nodes incurs 2x the average link latency. Google did substantial design and testing for various TCP HTTP(s) speedups. One of the concepts ISTR bandied about was opportunistic data sending - as long as the server is happy with the initial packet(s) sent by the client, and the client has included its initial request(s) into those initial packets, then the server begins to transmit data to the client, without waiting for ACKs of ACKs and further requests. The concept, at least as I understand it, is to, where possible, include initial data/ link set up/ etc requests, as early as feasible in the p2p link establishment packets, to minimize or eliminate round trips and thereby drastically reduce at least initial latency, and possibly also additional latency. For example think of a web page which contains hrefs to content, which the client only knows exist when it receives the base web page, so then of course must otherwise make a new request for the content identified - if the server knows what the client will need to ask for, it can automatically/ opportunistically send that data, without waiting for the obvious request. There may be peer node negotiation for different types of opportunism, e.g.: - on first ever new node contact, nodes may choose to auto (opportunisticly) hand out X cache undertaking/ promise - nodes may request "may I opportunisticly assume I may begin a "bulk fill" link with you, if I need (or am requested) to do so? - certain types of opportunism may be enabled by default, unless overridden by conf - other types of opportunism may only (by default) occur by nego - we ought be diligent in attempting to identify all possible types of opportunism that overlay nets may utilise/ provide for - we that we may opportunisticly optimize for as much opportunism as possible - everything possible to minimize number of round trips - algos which scale linearly (or better) with time, rather than b/w, and rather than exponentially in any unit A thought giving rise to the above is that notwithstanding our best efforts to stay "optimally" below link b/w and other limits, for many reasons any of these attempts will, at different times, fail. A link at a b/w of say 2MiB/s may oscillate or otherwise vary over time, up to 2MiB/s. When we are xmitting at say 1.95MiB/s, and phys nodes out of our control (such as an ISP's router) shape downwards, even temporarily, UDP packets get dropped. In many, most or all cases to start with, we will not have QoS at the (from our overlay net point of view) physical network layer. - This means we may have minimal to no control over which UDP packets get dropped. - This QoS issue is a fundamental area we need to expand our understanding of. - Longer term, iqnets shall be a motivator to end users, ISPs and GT-* folks, to push QoS down to the link layer. - When we do achieve internet wide QoS contracts at the network layer, a privacy issue (depending on your threat model) will be which QoS modes to utilize - e.g. you may be better off using "bulk fill", rather than "telephone audio" class QoS, in order to better hide your important phone call. - notwitstanding use cases and threat models, we don't fail to maximise provision for QoS, just because some use cases won't use it

I'm going to put this response onto the Cypherpunks list, so that everybody learns what is going on. You said, "I don’t think they were intentionally edited by anyone." That may very well be because you haven't checked. Would you know what to look for, if I hadn't told you? Probably not. I am apparently the first person in about 16 years to have identified this problem. And the reason I discovered it was simply that I was looking for a very specific piece of information that I knew should have been in it: The date of the first appearance of Part 1 of my Assassination Politics essay, which as I had vaguely recalled should have been somewhere in February or March 1995. And parts 2-6 should also have appeared in the 1995 archive. I didn't place it there: It was copied by a person whose name I don't recall (maybe I never knew it...) from the Digitaliberty email list, run by Bill Frezza. There was a huge amount of discussion of it in mid-1995. You can even find many references in 1996, but essentially nothing in 1995. I looked for this, and was shocked by what I saw (or more precisely, DIDN'T see): It is quite obvious now what happened: With a tiny number of exceptions in November and December 1995, all messages with the strings "Jim Bell", "jimbell(a)pacifier.com", " AP ", and "Assassination Politics" simply didn't appear. Someone had intentionally removed them. The fraud had been so minutely done that any appearance of the string ' ap ' that meant "Assassination Politics" had been removed, and the very few that meant "Associated Press" remained. Not an accident. Quite intentional. I think you owe it to the other users of the Cypherpunks list (then and now) to correct your "I don’t think they were intentionally edited by anyone." to "I agree it's obvious that 1995's archive was forged". And "I will help you to figure out who did it." It only takes your recognition that those strings had to appear, heavily, in the data and nevertheless they did do not. Check for the appearance of those strings in 1996, to see what the "normal" situation should have been. A few minutes of text searching will confirm all this. You could easily do this by talking to other people who were aware of what happened on the Cypherpunks list in 1995. Declan McCullagh was one; the names of the others are obviously available in the 1995 and 1996 archive itself, including the email addresses (at least, their email addresses then) of those very people. They will all agree that those strings, at the very least, are missing. And you won't find an 'innocent' explanation, no matter how hard you try. This cannot possibly have been by accident. And you are virtually certain to have been in contact with the person who did that fraud, or at least one who knew what was going on. You probably have archives, possibly on 'retired' hard drives. Or the people who gave the data to you. Eventually, we will find the answer. South Asia more than doubled its rate of birth registration to 71% between 2000 and 2014. In sub-Saharan Africa the rate dropped by one point, to 41%, over the same period. For poor villagers, going to a government office to register a birth is time-consuming and expensive, especially when officials demand bribes. Some countries charge a fee, which is a disincentive. Others penalize late registrations. One way to encourage people is to link birth registration to benefits such as child-support grants -- something South Africa did with great success. But that approach may also have the perverse consequence of denying payments to the very poorest. Money is another reason many African countries have fallen behind their peers. Extending the state's reach to remote areas can be expensive. So, too, is paying for skilled labour of the sort required to fill in forms accurately and to operate biometric machines. A few days ago, there was a news item about a bank robber who was caught because he (stupidly) took his cell phone to the robbery. He was exposed by the technique called "geo-fencing". https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/police-used-google-location-data-find-… The legitimacy of the use of this technique is currently a subject of his appeal, but is not relevant to my comment, below. Maybe if he had been smart enough to know how to activate his phone's "airplane mode", which supposedly turns off all electronic transmissions, he wouldn't have quite as identifiable. But, as cypherpunks know, it isn't clear that a smartphone's promise that it won't transmit and thus reveal its location can be relied upon. Further, even if we can know, for sure, that a phone didn't TRANSMIT during that relevant period, that doesn't mean that it didn't record its path in space (by GPS) and time during such a period, later to be uploaded to Google servers. Perhaps wrapping that phone in a few layers of aluminum foil would have blocked the (already quite weak) GPS signals, so the phone wouldn't know where it was. However, it occurred to that there may one day be a need for a person to enter a geographic area that has cellular phone service, but not have his smartphone emit signals that would (immediately) identify that phone's presence there. Okay, "airplane mode". But, he could also want his presence to be unknown including later, by disabling Google location services. MAYBE that would 'work'. He might want to visit like this multiple times, leaving that area each time, not leaving an electronic trace. Yet, maybe he'd want to use that smartphone's camera (to record video and still frame) and audio (to record sound). Even more, maybe an event would occur, and he would have evidence of it in video and audio, and he might (later) want to document the fact by uploading video and audio evidence to a server somewhere, at that time or seconds later. But he might not want to record the video, still frames, or audio 'in the clear'. And, there would be no reason that he'd have to upload the entire (huge) video and audio files: He could subject the resulting data to a 'cryptographic hash', https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptographic_hash_function so that he could upload only 256 bits. That hash could itself be encrypted, and could actually be a hash of a table of hashes: A hash for each one second of video and/or audio, or even a smaller quantity of time, just for an example. Initially, he could upload just the overall hash. And if, later on, he wanted to prove that he had acquired some data at a specific time, or at least prior to some specific time (when it was uploaded), he could do so by releasing files which correspond to the segments of video and/or audio files, and show that their hashes match the hashes in the uploaded hash-files. How could he transmit that short hash back to his home base, or anywhere else? Well, Simon Hickey, the head of Smerff Electrical, was a supporter of ours and on his own websites, he linked to us and had images of Pepe and other memes. He was sentenced to 9 months in jail for refusing to take down these websites. And the Australian and international media are completely failing to report on it. The Stormer has acquired a letter he wrote back in September, outlining his situation. I’m going to just go ahead and print most of the letter, so you can hear it straight from him. "Oi, Today 19 September I went to Supreme Court, charged with “contempt of court” for failing to remove my websites (which are now hosted elsewhere). The Judge gave me 9 (nine) months jail. I shit you not. I dunno whether that means 9 serve 9 or 9 serve 3 then parole but I’m still pissed off. I got one more court tomorrow that will finish my outstanding so I’ll have more accurate info then. I’m still charged with my private conversation that may have offended someone but didn’t, that’s in October 26. I think maybe 25 Oct. Brisbane magistrate court. This shit is insane. The court today would not accept that every statement I made in regards to the court conduct was true, in the public interests and therefore not subject to prosecution. I said at one stage that the conduct of the courts up to now was worthy of contempt. That didn’t help. LOL I will not let this minor setback deter me. I will never tire. Never slacken. Never give up." ... As usual, he is done for contempt of court, not the original crime. Careful what you say out there folks - stick to memes if you want the support of the courts, otherwise expect jail time.

According to the “Unified Agenda”, the DHS plans to publish a “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” (NPRM) in approximately July 2020 to make mug shots mandatory for U.S. citizens leaving or returning to the U.S. The laws cited in the “Unified Agenda” as providing the statutory basis for the proposed rule pertain to searches of aliens (non-U.S. citizens) and the obligation for U.S. citizens entering or leaving the U.S. to have U.S. passports (a requirement of questionable and largely untested Constitutionality). It’s not obvious how the DHS will twist this into purported authority to require mug shots of all U.S. citizens who travel internationally. The DHS has already given notice of its intention to solicit bids for systems to capture photos of all air travelers, including U.S. citizens, and is working with airlines and airports on schemes to share the photos, so that airlines and airports will be able to use data collected under government coercion for their own commercial business-process-automation and price-personalization purposes. In November 2019, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) component of DHS declared that its “test” of facial recognition on travelers crossing the US-Mexico border on foot had become a “permanent fixture” at certain pedestrian border crossings. Meanwhile, the DHS continues to try to reassure travelers by claiming that U.S. citizens can and will be able to opt out of being photographed at airports or land border crossings — even though we continue to get reports, as we have told DHS officials directly, from travelers who were told by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and/or by line-minders at airports and borders that photography is mandatory . Can you opt out? All current statutory and regulatory provisions for biometric entry and/or exit are explicitly applicable only to non-U.S. citizens. They provide no legal basis for photography of U.S. citizens leaving or returning to the U.S. But current law also provides no guarantee of a right for U.S. citizens to opt out, and no specification of procedures for opting out or for redress for U.S. citizens who aren’t allowed to opt out. Testing whether devices are NordVPN proxies

It seems that NordVPN is routing traffic to Disney+ through many residential IPv4 in the US.[0,1] As much as I love VPN services, it would suck if people's devices are unwittingly serving as NordVPN exits. Even if it's just for something as innocuous as Disney+. And it's easy to test that yourself, if you have a NordVPN account. If you're hitting a site using the Akamai CDN via one of NordVPN's US servers, you can see the server's exit IP address: $ curl -LIX GET https://foo.bar -H 'Pragma: akamai-x-get-client-ip' Generally, the "X-Akamai-Pragma-Client-IP" is the same as the server's nominal exit IP address: $ w3m -dump https://ipchicken.com But when hitting https://www.disneyplus.com it's not. But rather, it's some IPv4 from a residential ASN. Which you can check using https://ipinfo.io or whatever. I've seen no definitive information about the nature of these residential proxies. They might be NordVPN customers in the US, although that seems too footgun. Or they might have installed some third-party app with a bundled proxy server. Or it could even be outright malware. But in any case, it'd be cool if people could determine whether their devices are being used as NordVPN exits. I've run about 300 tests so far, on a few NordVPN's US servers, and found about 270 distinct proxy addresses. And so I've hacked a simple Linux test script, using hashed "X-Akamai-Pragma-Client-IP" values.[2] Just save the code block at the top as "test.sh" or whatever. Then do "chmod u+x", and execute in the terminal. It'll prompt "IPv4 to search for?". Type an IPv4, and hit "Enter". This is howling in the void, I know. Ah yes, I would agree that if you have an affidavit, and you do NOT have the witness there to be cross examined on their affidavit, THEN the affidavit will get thrown out at the hearing. The solution to this is simple - ensure your witness (or you, if it is your affidavit) actually turn up to the hearing of your own court case. That is an important fact about witnesses, and the same deal applies in the higher courts - if your witness does not turn up, an affidavit will not help, since the other side cannot cross examine the witness about their affidavit, and so the affidavit gets thrown out... That's a specific circumstance you should be prepared for. Of course, if it is your own case, and your own affidavit, presumably you are going to turn up to the hearing, and so the affidavit in this case cannot be thrown out - but your opponent can of course ask to cross examine you, and then you get into the witness stand and they cross examine you. If you are not confident in the facts of your own case, or if you are not confident generally, and you can afford a barrister, it is almost certain you'll get a better outcome by paying for a barrister and lawyer. But that costs a lot of money. Thank you for those pointers. Yes, VCAT/NCAT etc often have a "state clearly and briefly what happened" section on their "application forms", usually also with a suggestion to "attach an additional sheet if you can't fit it in this box" type of thing. My personal (IANAL) preference is to present my own matters, even in the higher courts (I am in the Vic Supreme Court at the moment on the "right to be heard in my own defence, when I am caused to appear in court" basic human right). As to your assertion that "An affidavit can't be used in a Magistrates Court" - this is simply not true, and is IMEHO, an egregious suggestion to those who might choose to self represent. Many times I have filed affidavits into the Magistrates' Courts of both Victoria and New South Wales, and on one occasion only (when I believed it was in my interest to do so) did I file a Statement (self signed, not even a statutory declaration). Further, I have spoken personally with/ seen, acquaintances who began with a court case in the Magistrates' Court, and proceed on some sort of appeal into the Supreme Court, have to re-do their statement or stat dec, and file it as an affidavit (the only form the Supreme Court accepts). I was even supporting a self represented VCAT defendant, who actually filed an affidavit to lay out his version of events - VCAT accepted that affidavit, and he relied on it during the hearing. So if you have some authority to back up -why- it is that you say "An affidavit can't be used in a Magistrates Court", then I would very much appreciate a link or copy of the document, so that I can read that authority (law, regulation, section or other document) which you are referring to. Especially given that you say you "work for the cyber police", any insight into such laws or regulations would likely be useful for humble folks such as myself - so thank you in advance. The SEC Is Reviewing the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Rejection Nov 18, 2019 The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking a second look at the rejection of a recent bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposal. Overturning the rejection would clear the way for potentially the first bitcoin ETF in the U.S., following years of anticipation of a mainstream-ready investment product. According to a notice published in the Federal Register over the weekend and dated Nov. 18, the SEC’s five commissioners will review the bitcoin ETF put forth by Bitwise Asset Management. Bitwise did not request the review, said Matt Hougan, the company’s global head of research. “We do, however, welcome the opportunity to submit comments and continue the dialogue with the SEC,” he said in an email. The rejection was written by the agency’s Division of Trading and Markets on Oct. 9. The Nov. 18 notice actually references a letter from the SEC’s commissioners dated Oct. 15. It is not clear what triggered the SEC’s review. Under current federal law, the commissioners can grant a review at their discretion, or following the filing of a petition. The order rejecting the proposal will remain in effect until the review has concluded, the notice said, with the commissioners either upholding the staff rejection or overturning it. As part of the review, the general public can comment on the rejection through Dec. 18, 2019. Groundhog day Unlike the SEC’s formal approval or disapproval process, there are no set deadlines for the review of a decision. The Commission has previously reviewed the rejection of a bitcoin ETF proposal filed by the family office of Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, ultimately upholding the decision after more than a year. It is possible that an SEC commissioner may have called for the Bitwise review. Famously, Commissioner Hester Peirce – dubbed “Crypto Mom” by the community – announced the review of nine rejected bitcoin ETF applications in 2018. Peirce also dissented from the SEC’s second rejection of the Winklevoss ETF. The ETF applications, filed in late 2017 and early 2018 by GraniteShares, ProShares and Direxion, were rejected in August 2018, with Peirce announcing their review the next day. However, it remains unclear what the status of this review is, or whether any of these decisions will be overturned. Neither Peirce nor an SEC spokesperson immediately responded to emailed requests for comment. ProShares declined to comment, and a request for comment to Direxion was not returned by press time. The future has arrived and you now have the opportunity to write quantum algorithms and to run them on actual quantum computers. Here’s what we are announcing today: [Amazon Braket](https://aws.amazon.com/braket) – A fully managed service that allows scientists, researchers, and developers to begin experimenting with computers from multiple quantum hardware providers in a single place. [Bra-ket notation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bra%E2%80%93ket_notation) is commonly used to denote quantum mechanical states, and inspired the name of the service. AWS Center for Quantum Computing – A research center adjacent to the [California Institute of Technology](https://www.caltech.edu/) (Caltech) that will bring together the world’s leading quantum computing researchers and engineers in order to accelerate development of quantum computing hardware and software. Amazon Quantum Solutions Lab – [A new program](https://aws.amazon.com/quantum-solutions-lab/) to connect AWS customers with quantum computing experts from Amazon and a very select set of consulting partners. What’s Quantum Computing Ordinary (classical) computers use collections of bits to represent their state. Each bit is definitively 0 or 1, and the number of possible states is 2n if you have n bits. 1 bit can be in either of 2 states, 2 bits can be in any one of 4 states, and so forth. A computer with 1 MiB of memory has 2(8*1048576) states, excluding CPU registers and external storage. This is a large number, but it is finite, and can be calculated. Quantum computers use a more sophisticated data representation known as a [qubit](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qubit) or quantum bit. Each qubit can exist in state 1 or 0, but also in superpositions of 1 and 0, meaning that the qubit simultaneously occupies both states. Such states can be specified by a two-dimensional vector that contains a pair of complex numbers, making for an infinite number of states. Each of the complex numbers is a probability amplitude, basically the odds that the qubit is a 0 or a 1, respectively. A classical computer can be in just one of those 2n states at a given time, but a quantum computer can occupy all of them in parallel. If you have been in IT for any length of time, you know that [Moore’s Law](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law) has brought us to the point where it possible to manufacture memory chips that store 2 tebibytes (as I write this) on a thumb drive. The physical and chemical processes that make this possible are amazing, and well worth studying. Unfortunately, these processes do not apply directly to the manufacture of devices that contain qubits; as I write this, the largest quantum computers contain about 50 qubits. These computers are built on several different technologies, but seem to have two attributes in common: they are scarce, and they must be run in carefully controlled physical environments. How it Works Quantum computers work by manipulating the amplitudes of the state vector. To program a quantum computer, you figure out how many qubits you need, wire them together into a quantum circuit, and run the circuit. When you build the circuit, you set it up so that the correct answer is the most probable one, and all the rest are highly improbable. Whereas classical computers use Boolean logic and are built using NOT, OR, and AND gates, quantum computers use superposition and interference, and are built using [quantum logic gates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_logic_gate) with new and exotic names (X, Y, Z, CNOT, Hadamard, Toffoli, and so forth). This is a very young field: the model was first proposed in the early 1980s, followed shortly by the realization that a quantum computer could perform simulations of quantum mechanical systems that are impossible on a classical computer. Quantum computers have applications to machine learning, linear algebra, chemistry, cryptography, simulations of physics, search, and optimization. For example, [Shor’s Algorithm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shor%27s_algorithm) shows how to efficiently factor integers of any size ([this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvTqbM5Dq4Q&t=160s) has a really good explanation). Looking Ahead Today’s implementations of public key cryptography are secure because factoring large integers is computationally intensive. Depending on key length, the time to factor (and therefore break) keys ranges from months to forever (more than the [projected lifetime of our universe](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultimate_fate_of_the_universe)) However, when a quantum computer with enough qubits is available, factoring large integers will become instant and trivial. Defining “enough” turns out to be far beyond what I can cover (or fully understand) in this blog post, and brings in to play the difference between logical and physical qubits, noise rates, error correction, and more! You need to keep this in mind when thinking about medium-term encryption and data protection, and you need to know about [post-quantum cryptography](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-quantum_cryptography). Today, [s2n](https://github.com/awslabs/s2n) (our implementation of the TLS/SSL protocols) already includes two different key exchange mechanisms that are quantum-resistant. Given that it takes about a decade for a new encryption protocol to become widely available and safe to use, it is not too soon to look ahead to a time when large-scale quantum computers are available. Quantum computing is definitely not mainstream today, but that time is coming. It is a very powerful tool that can solve certain types of problems that are difficult or impossible to solve classically. I suspect that within 40 or 50 years, many applications will be powered in part using services that run on quantum computers. As such, it is best to think of them like a GPU or a math [coprocessor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_8087). They will not be used in isolation, but will be an important part of a hybrid classical/quantum solution. Here We Are Our goal is to make sure you know enough about quantum computing to start looking for some appropriate use cases and conducting some tests and experiments. We want to build a solid foundation that is firmly rooted in reality, and to work with you to move into a quantum-powered future. Ok, with that as an explanation, let’s get into it! Amazon Braket This new service is designed to let you get some hands-on experience with qubits and quantum circuits. You can build and test your circuits in a simulated environment and then run them on an actual quantum computer. [Amazon Braket](https://aws.amazon.com/braket) is a fully managed AWS service, with security & encryption baked in at each level. These devices have a couple of things in common: they are leading-edge tech, they are expensive to build and run, and they generally operate in a very extreme and specialized environment (supercooled or near-vacuum) that must be kept free of electrical, thermal, and magnetic noise. Taken together, I think it is safe to say that most organizations will never own a quantum computer, and will find the cloud-based on-demand model a better fit. It may well be the case that production-scale quantum computers are the first cloud-only technology. The actual quantum computers are works of art, and I am happy to be able to share some cool pictures. By choosing a different physical transport means a different and, I maintain, better set of security tradeoffs become available. Unlike approaches which invariably depend on the Internet and heavily monitored commercial gateways, I propose using infrastructure-less or non-permissioned commercial, single-hop, relays. It's not the electromagnetic spectrum isn't also monitored but that the efficacy of that monitoring is, unlike the former environment, much more limited by physics, channel conditions, information theory and the proper application of tradecraft by possible targets. Both as a hobbyist and professional I've delved into the practicality of utilizing and building on commonly available, even consumer grade, Software Defined Signal Processing (SDSP, the use of the term SDR is verboten in my world due to its inherent regulatory implications) hardware and open source software. My investigations (some openly shared at Cypherpunk-oriented tech conferences) have led me to believe that even a moderate uptake of these SDSP technologies would effectively neutralize most or all SIGINT against parties who aren't already the subject of individual targeting. These technologies aren't some magical new creation but rather the integration and adoption of ideas already well studied and reported in academia but whose implementations are often not openly available for tailoring and testing, mostly due to unfounded fears of regulatory actions.
