hi folks, the science gateways workshop at ggf14 had hundreds. it was a big hit. the ggf15 event was a bust because it more tutorial and not well advertised. the Sc05 event was well advertised among the community and it was a workshop. i think the only conclusion to draw here is t hat a well organized wworkshop is always better than a not-so-well organized and advertised tutorial. dennis On Mon, 21 Nov 2005, Catlett Charlie wrote:

Part of the problem I see with some groups at GGF (GCE being one of them) is that they have no real targets or goals that they are pursuing together. What are they trying to *accomplish* by meeting? Groups that just discuss things tend to dwindle pretty quickly (and GCE isn't alone in that).

I note that portals meeting at GGF15 drew about 15 people (in a room that could seat 100,000) The portals workshop at SC05 (on the slightly unattractive friday) drew 60 people and its success I believe is motivating that group to continue outside GGF next year with an SC06 workshop. Portals (GCE) is still alive at GGF but it is not perhaps flourishing in the way we would like.
In general we still are not attracting some of the (research) communities that used to be at GGF.
